BTW, consider Wake Forest as a nice place to live. Only about 5 miles from North Raleigh. I'm from Raleigh, but have lived in WF since 1993.
It's great. I consider WF to be basically an extension of North Raleigh, anyway.

Sounds like raleigh would be the best place to live, but it's probably not feasible, commute wise.

Will look into enterprise. Thanks for the tip.

one more question I thought of - how pedestrian friendly are these places? I get the impression that alot of it is suburban sprawl.

also...anybody like durham? I'm just thinking that maybe it's like Detroit - 98% of people think it's an awful, cruddy, crime infested place, but if you know where to look, it's actually pretty cool.

As I said earlier South Durham is not bad at all and if you don't mind the commute Apex is great as well.

Well, CTC did go straight to Rivers, but that was only to make sure he was still coming to NC State. PR was already committed to us when O'Cain was coach.
Nobody else wanted him as a QB. Auburn wanted him as either a tight end or a safety....can't remember which.
Don't think 'Bama wanted him at all.
The Alabama schools missed out on two future college greats from their own state that year.....Rivers and Jericho Cotchery...who is now playing for the Jets.

Jesus. Every weak-willed lil' mamma's boy's got a ghetto story about Durham that they shyte their britches over it.

Here I am

The facts:
Durham's crime rate across the board (homicide, theft, b&e, rape, etc.) has declined in the last five years.
Cary's crime rate has increased in the last three years.
Raleigh is second to Charlotte for most homicides in a year.

From my house, I can walk to the Durham Bulls (AAA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays) stadium, farmer's market, three exceptional restaurants (Magnolia Grill - James Beard award recipient), four pubs, and one really cool lesbian bar that lets me in (hey, I like girls too and I think I have an Indigo Girls CD somewhere.) It's not the music hangout like Chapel Hill but if you ask the local musicians they'll tell you they live in Durham.

Yes, there are bums around and they have been a problem. But recently the city has added more mobile cops on cycles to patrol the downtown area at night. You still see some bums around but they're not in your face like they used to be. There are some nice condos down around Southpoint Mall (down on I-40) and Briar Creek Commons (on US 70 north of the airport). Nice houses in the city districts too. There are some dead sections, mostly in East Durham.

Some advice - depending on where your jobs are, you'll need a car. Unfortunately, driving from my house to downtown Raleight takes close to 25 minutes with traffic moving. I-40 during the drive home hours is unaffectionately called the "parking lot." Driving to Chapel Hill can take 20 minutes. Yes, there is public transportation and now they've extended hours to the weekends and late at night so it is feasible to bus from city to city. I haven't tried it myself, though.

I wish you luck in finding a job if you don't have one lined up already. Some of us are in different professions so if you tell us what you are looking for maybe we could help.

/me showing my downtown Durham colors - "So help me God, you say 'heart of Carolina' and I will carve yours out."

No, they don't. There's no coincidence that Durham County is the DC of NC, in the same way that Washington DC is to the US.....that is, the murder capital. Although I think Charlotte has passed Durham in the last 10 years.

Durham and Raleigh are neck-and-neck, (no pun intended) but you also have to remember that Raleigh and Charlotte are much bigger than Durham, so murder per capita still goes to Durham.

Edit: Wake County (Raleigh) and Mecklenburg County (Charlotte) have roughly 3 times the population of Durham County.

Okay, not an edit, evidently I quoted myself instead of editing....must be past my bed time.

That's taken in account too. Charlotte outstrips everyone. (What in the heck are they doing down there?) Raleigh has 48% more population than Durham and 52% more reported crime. As for the retard shooting at some busses, yes he was an idiot and it is was in East Durham.

But hey, you guys are afraid to come my town that's fine. I'm looking to buy a house this summer and I could spend my money on a bigger place than Chapel Hill or Raleigh and be just as safe.

Dubb if your friend is going to Duke and you find a job in RTP the best bet is to live in Durham county. Duke, by the way, is west of the downtown area.

Just FYI - the entire Eastern Seaboard is like that from Boston down to Jacksonville. Rush hour is BAD *ANYWHERE*.

That said, I recall thinking that Raleigh was really a VERY pretty city, and was moderately high on our list of places to move from OH (we valued fairy highly historical properties and cities 'with a lot of history').

Chapel Hill....I dunno. It's like one big suburb. Rows and rows of clone houses and the whole nine yards.

I understand it's a good area to move for your career, though (presuming something IT or technology-related).

Population isn't taken into account in those figures you are stating. I giving actual numbers, not adjusted for differences in population. Charlotte is far ahead...you're right there....but in total numbers, not per capita.
But Wake is just barely ahead of Durham in total crime, but Wake had nearly 3 times the population.

So what I say is true.....there is more crime per capita in Durham. And the per capita comparison almost evens it up between Durham and Charlotte, too.
Durham has over 200k people, and over 20k crimes.
Charlotte has nearly 800k people, and over 70k crimes.

Wake, in comparison, has only a few less people than Charlotte, but around 20k crimes.
Much safer place to live. Isn't even close, in fact.

And I work in Durham all the time. I wouldn't say I'm super-familiar with the whole city,b ut I know which parts to stay away from, and it's whole lot more area than anywhere else in the Triangle.

LOL, public transportation? Within Chapel Hill you've got a good bus system, and then there's the Triangle Transit Authority which I've never used (goes between Durham, CH and Raleigh) but other than that its a suburban wasteland. No light rail, taxis have to be called well in advance, etc.

Chapel Hill is a great area to live in, and not everywhere is pricey--when I was up there Carrboro was a good value. The problem is, its great for students but pretty far out of the Raleigh/Durham metro area (a good 10-15 minutes on a highway perpetually under construction delays.) It will work for your g/f but I don't know where you'll be working. If she wants to be closer to Duke, there are good apartments off of 15-501 close to the expressway.

Just make sure when you come down here you pick the right college sport team to pull for, which would be NCSU of course.

Let's just hope they can make it in the end zone this year.

I know Trestman won't be nearly as bad as Mazzone.

Hell, a blind deaf mute couldn't be any worse than Mazzone.

Course still kind of irked Holiday and Herring left...that majorly sucked

Roger that. I like our new WR coach though.

So true. Clark, Hicks, Hall, Dunlap.... Brown, Davis, Baker, Washington...fcking four horsemen, I assume Blackman will be used for more returns and receiving out of the backfield. I am interested in seeing how Demario Pressley works out....and Mario is SEX!

But I didn't say that...

Wow, lots of Raleigh folk here!

Yeah, there is esentially no public transportation, and certain areas of I-40 and I-440 are HORRIBLE during Rush Hour, typically heading OUT of Durham and TOWARDS Raleigh/i-95. Learn the backroads and you're set.

Durham is a GHETTO to avoid at all costs.

Chapel Hill is ahight, but too close to the ghetto for me. Plus, UNC has entirely too many weirdos and liberal bizzaros around for me, not to mention living costs in Chapel Hill are noticably higher than in Raleigh (spring for a place in Garner, Holly Springs, Apex, or a surrounding SMALL town rather than the Raleigh/Cary zip code if you're gonna buy a home)

Dude you can get a SOLID 1-bedroom apartment here near (within 15 miles and under) of NC State for ~$525 a month, and you might be able to negotiate that even. Living costs here are really low compared to most larger cities. TONS to do here, everything near NCSU is open 'til like 3am. Of course NC has awesome highways compared to most states. Cops are hard on speeding though, but radars are allowed, unlike VA.

Just drive around the roads nearest NC State (Glenwood, Marcom, Avent Ferry, Western Blvd. and there's TONS of apartment places. Just go to apartmentguide.com or rentnet.com or rent.com and search the Raleigh area. LOTS of 1-bedroom rentals available at great prices (compared to your budget).

I'm a proud NCSU student ('bout to graduate, woohoo!) and could tell you nearly anything about Raleigh, good luck & you'll love it here!

How the hell did I miss this thread. Me and Nitemare representin South Side Durham up in yo ash or something. I'm a stupid 30 year old white guy what the hell do I know.

Anyways, South Durham is great, but it's getting pricier ever since the Streets of Southpoint mall was built. My wife and I have an 1200 sq foot house in South Durham and we paid $120K for it 4 years ago. Other houses in my neighborhood have sold for $145K so we've appreciated a bit. North Durham isn't too bad either, once you get past I85. And actually downtown Durham is in the beginnings of a revival with the new American Tobacco Warehouse conversion and the proximity to the Durham Ball Park where the Durham Bulls play. There are a lot of artsy-type people moving into downtown Durham and is displacing crime a bit. It's not as bad as other people say it is. Where I live in South Durham, my commute to anywhere in the triangle area is very quick. I actually bike/walk to work too.

What kind of job are you looking for? Do you have any java development experience? If so PM me, the company I work for is looking!

Anyone ever fly to Raleigh from Denver? What's the best airline to take? Is it easier to fly into Charlotte and drive? Is it easier to fly into another airport and drive?
