sports - well, I dunno, I've never gotten up in arms over sports...the stories I've heard about duke basketball fans just seems idiotic to me. I plan on doing alot of smiling and nodding.
road construction and detours - I live in michigan. it can't be as bad as it is here.
Sounds like raleigh would be the best place to live, but it's probably not feasible, commute wise.
Will look into enterprise. Thanks for the tip.
one more question I thought of - how pedestrian friendly are these places? I get the impression that alot of it is suburban sprawl.
also...anybody like durham? I'm just thinking that maybe it's like Detroit - 98% of people think it's an awful, cruddy, crime infested place, but if you know where to look, it's actually pretty cool.
Well, CTC did go straight to Rivers, but that was only to make sure he was still coming to NC State. PR was already committed to us when O'Cain was coach.Originally posted by: Skiguy411Really? I thought no one was picking Rivers up and as soon as Chuck was hired he went straight to Rivers.
I guess I heard wrong.

As I said earlier South Durham is not bad at all and if you don't mind the commute Apex is great as well.
No, they don't. There's no coincidence that Durham County is the DC of NC, in the same way that Washington DC is to the US.....that is, the murder capital. Although I think Charlotte has passed Durham in the last 10 years.Originally posted by: Dubbsuppose I should have clarified - does anybody like the urban parts of durham? (downtown area)

Jesus. Every weak-willed lil' mamma's boy's got a ghetto story about Durham that they shyte their britches over it.
Here I am
The facts:
Durham's crime rate across the board (homicide, theft, b&e, rape, etc.) has declined in the last five years.
Cary's crime rate has increased in the last three years.
Raleigh is second to Charlotte for most homicides in a year.
From my house, I can walk to the Durham Bulls (AAA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays) stadium, farmer's market, three exceptional restaurants (Magnolia Grill - James Beard award recipient), four pubs, and one really cool lesbian bar that lets me in (hey, I like girls too and I think I have an Indigo Girls CD somewhere.) It's not the music hangout like Chapel Hill but if you ask the local musicians they'll tell you they live in Durham.
Yes, there are bums around and they have been a problem. But recently the city has added more mobile cops on cycles to patrol the downtown area at night. You still see some bums around but they're not in your face like they used to be. There are some nice condos down around Southpoint Mall (down on I-40) and Briar Creek Commons (on US 70 north of the airport). Nice houses in the city districts too. There are some dead sections, mostly in East Durham.
Some advice - depending on where your jobs are, you'll need a car. Unfortunately, driving from my house to downtown Raleight takes close to 25 minutes with traffic moving. I-40 during the drive home hours is unaffectionately called the "parking lot." Driving to Chapel Hill can take 20 minutes. Yes, there is public transportation and now they've extended hours to the weekends and late at night so it is feasible to bus from city to city. I haven't tried it myself, though.
I wish you luck in finding a job if you don't have one lined up already. Some of us are in different professions so if you tell us what you are looking for maybe we could help.
/me showing my downtown Durham colors - "So help me God, you say 'heart of Carolina' and I will carve yours out."
Durham and Raleigh are neck-and-neck, (no pun intended) but you also have to remember that Raleigh and Charlotte are much bigger than Durham, so murder per capita still goes to Durham.Originally posted by: MaxDepth

Population isn't taken into account in those figures you are stating. I giving actual numbers, not adjusted for differences in population. Charlotte is far ahead...you're right there....but in total numbers, not per capita.Originally posted by: MaxDepth
That's taken in account too. Charlotte outstrips everyone. (What in the heck are they doing down there?) Raleigh has 48% more population than Durham and 52% more reported crime. As for the retard shooting at some busses, yes he was an idiot and it is was in East Durham.
But hey, you guys are afraid to come my town that's fine. I'm looking to buy a house this summer and I could spend my money on a bigger place than Chapel Hill or Raleigh and be just as safe.

Just make sure when you come down here you pick the right college sport team to pull for, which would be NCSU of course.
Let's just hope they can make it in the end zone this year.
I know Trestman won't be nearly as bad as Mazzone.
Hell, a blind deaf mute couldn't be any worse than Mazzone.
Course still kind of irked Holiday and Herring left...that majorly sucked

Roger that. I like our new WR coach though.

Dubb if your friend is going to Duke and you find a job in RTP the best bet is to live in Durham county. Duke, by the way, is west of the downtown area.

Yes, the wide receivers, running backs and defensive ends = this year

But Wake is just barely ahead of Durham in total crime, but Wake had nearly 3 times the population.
So what I say is true.....there is more crime per capita in Durham. And the per capita comparison almost evens it up between Durham and Charlotte, too.
Durham has over 200k people, and over 20k crimes.
Charlotte has nearly 800k people, and over 70k crimes.
Wake, in comparison, has only a few less people than Charlotte, but around 20k crimes.
Much safer place to live. Isn't even close, in fact.
And I work in Durham all the time. I wouldn't say I'm super-familiar with the whole city,b ut I know which parts to stay away from, and it's whole lot more area than anywhere else in the Triangle.
