Durham and Fayetteville: shitholes

I live in Hope Valley, which is technically Durham, and a shithole it is not. We're closer to Chapel Hill than we are to "the city of Durham" as most people consider it. I can be in Chapel Hill city limits in five minutes, it's a 25 minute+ drive to Durham depending on traffic.

Would be interesting if this entire area attempted to leave Durham and incorporate, most of the residents would be for it I imagine. Durham would never let it happen though, most of the property tax revenue is generated here.

Salisbury here. I was born in Virginia but North Carolina is home now. Can't really think of anyplace else I'd want to live anymore.

I like that Downtown Durham has a bad rep. It keeps the boring, superficial people out.

I was at North Gate Mall today looking at the Transformer Pad Infinity at CompUSA, then headed over the ATC to fart around a bit and then had lunch at Bull City Burger and Brewery.

Besides DPAC and Duke, this is best thing about Durham

LOL, I did not know this. I pass underneath that bridge (car not a truck) numerous times and never paid attention to the height.

Its been pretty good to me. It's no MicroCenter but has helped me out of a jam numerous times (including the one in Raleigh). If I really need some technical advice with a part, there's always Intrex near NC 54.

I'm from Raleigh, live in Wake Forest now, which has become essentially an extension of North Raleigh.

There are lots of nice places around the country, but I can't think of a better place to live.

We are 2.5 hours from either the beach or the mountains. Weather is great most of the year. We get a little snow every couple of years, but it melts off in a day or two, so you don't have to deal with it for weeks on end.

About the only downside to this area is that we keep getting rated the #1 place to live, and are consistently in the top 5, which is bringing in lots of yankees. They are, in turn, steadily screwing things up, lol. But honestly, what they ARE doing, is leaving the north and coming South, because of the weather and cost of living. What they are doing here, though, is voting for the same tax and spend politicians whose policies drove the north's cost of living up so high. Now we have the highest taxes and cost of living in the region.

So I guess in another 20 years they'll find another low-cost/nice weather oasis to move to.

We moved downtown this year from a nearby suburb. The "shitholes" in the building where we live and the previous project next to it are all sold out Seriously though, it's hard to beat walking out your door and going to DPAC and all of the nearby amenities/farmers market. Its seems like a new business or restaurant is opening every month.

My grandparents have lived on the Outer Banks since the early 90s. My parents have a beach house there as well and some land in Pittsboro. I like NC.

I may be moving to the area around Raleigh / Durham (Lake Gaston is good, but may be more expensive) Also considering Traeburn (golf community) area sometime in the next few years. Would consider Chapel hill as well as it near to the others. Where ever, I want to be close to, but not in, a large metro area for access to shopping and medical as we get older. Property tax bills here in NJ are out of control. I can get a 5,000 sq ft home down there for well under $800K and pay under $10K a year in tax. Up here it is like $16K for 3,200 sq ft of home. And if I am down there, one can golf just about all year long.

Well, not in 33 degrees, but down there you can probably play 10 months out of 12 with no issues. Up here, the courses close for 3 to 4 months, depending on how bad winter gets.
