North Korea Violates DMZ

This wouldn't have even made the news if tensions with N. Korea weren't running at a full boil right now. It hasn't made the news on the countless other times it's occurred. Violation of the DMZ, whether inadvertent or intentional, isn't rare by either side, nor are "stray rounds" finding their way into or across the Z, again heading in either direction.

JW said it himself... AXIS OF EVIL

They really are trying to provoke something. Nobody in their right mind violates so many sanctions all at once, boots out UN inspectors, removes monitoring equipment, without a reason.

I guess they think now is the time since they feel everybody is tied up in middle eastern issues right now. Sure hate to be them when they figure out that there are enough resources to go around. (Japan has not been very happy since N. Korea shot that missile over them a couple years ago)

I have a feeling your right, but I had no idea that incursions were frequent... It just seems like North Korea is gearing up for utter stupidity this time around. I seriously hope we don't have to go to war against them. However, if a war did break out, don't you guys think it would be a wide international effort? and not just the US? I mean, lots of other countries have been concerned with North Korea since the end of the Korean War.

Man, I really think this is going to escalate into hostilities someday. North Korea is getting more and more defiant. They see that the South is a vibrant growing economy, and they are a starving backwater. It's their own fault. As long as they continue to enraptured by the cult of Kim Jong II, their country is goin nowhere but down.

It's pretty easy to see why they are getting more stubborn though. What's that old saying? When you ain't got nothing you got nothing to lose.

I think an ass kicking is in order, but since lately the average South Korean dislikes our presence there so much. I say we should let the SK military deal with it. With the U.S providing weapons and logistical experience only. I would not commit one US soldier to fighting on their behalf.

who cares how many they have, it only takes one working one to create a big mess. North Korea is in a very provocative mode, anything they do will make the news

While I commend your idealism, I'd like to respectfully point out that you're missing the bigger picture here. If it were just about North vs South Korea, I wouldn't care either; the problem lies in the fact that North Korea either has or will soon have nuclear weapons, and they either have or will soon have ICBM capability. This makes them a threat to the US directly or indirectly (by posing a threat to our allies and trading partners in the region). A nuclear strike against Taiwan or Japan, or even South Korea, would play havoc on the world economy.

Believe the count on nukes may be three, with two more coming. Now that the reactors are running, could see perhaps a dozen by the end of 2003. Don't think it will come to that. I was discussing the possible goals of NK with someone last night, and I thought it most likely paranoia fueling this behavior. May still be, but with incursions into the DMZ I wonder if this is a prelude to invasion. I have no idea. Wish were weren't trying to show Saddam how big our wiener is and got down to trying to contain NK, if that is possible at all.

Bleh. A few guys walk 100-400 meters into the zone, setup a machine gun, then pack it up and go home at night, ooooohh scary!

Knew a guy that did two tours in Korea. Something happened there all the time, but usually someone fired off a few rounds from the north, and that was it. No one entered the zone. That was back more than 20 years ago. Maybe they have been doing this for awhile, but talk about poor timing if they did not mean to send a signal.

Timing *may* be bad, depends on how often it happens. The article stated that the SK were working on a road, which I assume goes through the DMZ, and it also mentions that the SK were armed, guarding the road crew. It doesn't mention whether the SK was in the DMZ as well, but I'd imagine that the NK always do this kind of thing when SK activity is in or near the DMZ. This whole thing stinks of media sensationalism!

South Koreans, anal-wise, are the French of Asia. They complain about everything, and strike, and protest.

Edit: With strong anti-american sentiment in SK, NK thinks it's time to whip up the Korean nation and whip some yankee ass.

Absolutely correct. Violations happen relatively frequently.

During the 70s, duty with 2ID in certain units was rewarded with a combat patch for the right shoulder as well. A U.S. soldier earned a Purple Heart in a firefight there about 10 years ago. During that particular firefight, I think 2 KATUSAs were killed in addition to a couple of NK soldiers.

The "D" ain't no joke.

Most of SK wants us out of there anyways, they think we're oppressing them by holding down the fort. Perhaps we should finally move out and let the uninformed generation of SK learn what NK really wants to do with them.

Me thinks the "Cruise Missile Express" will be stopping at their soon to be running (but not for long) nuclear plutonium production plant.

The current administration of the RNK must believe the BS their allies to the north told them, that when they achieve the status of Nuclear Capable, the world will fear them. Unfortuneatly since China isnt propping them up anymore, they feel that without the achieved status of nuclear capability the world will dismiss them into the realm of third world continental flotsam n jetsam they deserve. Their playing a dangerous game of international chicken with an experienced player. And when they lose, their leader is crazy enough to try something rash, that could ultimately lead them into a path of war.

I never truly understand why the entire world is so anti-American... heck, even our own allies are anti-american. I went back to Taiwan and of course politics is always a hot topic there and I notice a fair amount of anti-American sentiment there as well. It was of a different nature than that of fundamentalist Islamics or Koreans but still I noticed it.

Was kinda offended since this is my adopted nation... and I'm proud of it despite the problems we may have...

True that! When I was stationed in Korea, there was a clear difference between the older folks who were around during the Korean War or born just after it and the later generations who had it easy. The younger generations might as well be Communists, for all their pathetic, utterly contemptable attempts at sucking up to the North. They are not worthy of our sacrifice.
I don't see a reason to protect South Korea any more. Asia should be protected by Asians rather than by non-Asians who will always be seen as a colonial enemy no matter what we do. If North Korea is going to have nukes, let the South fend for itself. They probably have white flags standing by.
Japan is organised enough that if it rearmed and nuclearised (not unthinkable if they feel threatened) it would be ample counterweight to China and North Korea.

I say pull out of South Korea. Than when North Korea invades South Korea and takes it over, than we can say "Told you so".

Ok, so that was a little sarcastic, but at the same time kinda being serious.

North Korea having nukes is a major threat to the world, in particular the US. Why? North Korea is the biggest proliferator of missle technology in the world. It's not to hard to believe that North Korea will sell nuke tech and hardware to terrorists groups and other countries.

As for why do a lot of countries have an anti-American sentiment.....well, they don't hate the people, they hate the goverment. They see us going after Iraq, but in their eyes Israel does the same things yet the US are close allies with Israel. It's a double standards thing. It's perception. It's propaganda.

More reason for more funding of the Missle Defense Shield program.

Let me start by saying that some ppl in here really need to take into consideration what the meaning of WAR could possibly involve. Alot of times I see ppl throw around the word NUKE 'EM like an extra penny you from a 99 cent deal. PEOPLE DIE. I serve, my wife serves in Korea right now. To think that a lot of people write off war like it's something they could never experience need to enlist and stand-to. I know the veterans in here who have seen the evil head of war can agree. Dont take it lightly.
