Northbridge Cooling

I recently bought the vantec iceberq cooler for my northbridge on my Epox 8rda+ nforce2 hoping to keep it cooler, so i installed it and used artic silver 3 cooling grease as well, it works well and is quiet but mbm5 shows the temps are basically the same as they were with the stock cooler? this has gotta do a better job than the crappy passive one, any ideas? I also added a small heatsink it came with on the south bridge, using their thermal tape.

I have never seen a mobo with a temp sensor for the northbridge...but thats besides the point. If your seeing the same temp as before, I would bet that it stays at that constant temp and doesn't fluctuate very much at all. Your stock cooler may have may have allowed the temp to fluctuate while under heavy load.

You also have to remember that software use the stock sensor points which aren't very accurate. For instance: I have a SOYO P4X400 mobo, and my CPU runs at negative 38 degrees according to any monitoring software I have used. I went ahead and installed after market hardware temperature monitoring with a nice digital display. See it here

In my experience, even a northbridge functioning over 900mhz doesn't get hot. I have a passive zalman heatsink on my northbridge, and at around 900mhz, it's barely warm to the touch.

You just added noise to your case for no reason. Good job. :beer:

i just removed a fan off my northbridge and it made it cooler -- so perhaps the fan does more harm than good on certain heatsinks and causes...iono...so iono maybe try the new heatsink without the fan?
