NorthBridge Fan popped off

One of the pins that holds the northbridge fan down on my Abit IC7-G has come off it is seperated from the board, now i can use the other 2 but i wanted to make sure i can use thermal paste on this, the sticker holding the fan on is unuseable and all i have around the house is thermal past. is it fairly easy to reapply ?

Sure...just like any heatsink, spread on a thin/even layer and put the sink on.

Indeed. It must have been cheaper to make than using standard through-hole mounting.

My heatsink fan on my Abit IS7 popped off too. Talk about cheaply made. Nice board but they did cut some corners.

I think that many users of the BH7 had the same thing happen to them. And it's all just with the Intel boards... I wonder why they chose to use the new/crappy method of securing the heatsink on the Intel boards but continued to use pushpins for their AMD boards?

The NB HSF fell off my IC7 a few weeks after the installation. One of the horseshoe tabs came unsoldered, and I tried to reposition it to use the other 2 mounts however it didn't attach properly. I ended up breaking out my soldering iron and fixed the tab. A month or so later it came off again....LOL. I soldered it a second time and so far so good.

It sounds like those horseshoe pads are just determined to not stay mounted!

if you experience your northbridge heatsink falling off i really suggest finding a suitable replacement you are happy with (stock heatsink im my case for my BH7) and epoxy that sucker on with artic adhesive.


Its not safe because it fell on my video card and made contact with something that shorted out my system, everything was ok but it is worth the peace of mind to get it attacheed permanently.
