hey guys just wondering whats the max temp my northbridge can go without it been dangerous for the motherboard.

i had a lian-li case and just changed to a nzxt phantom ghost 410.

i had 5 fans running. cpu temps are 33 degrees idle. 49-52 load.

northbridge idle is 64 and while gaming 71 degrees celcius.

i have scythe cpu cooler.è

asus extreme rampage 3 socket 1366 mobo.

intel i7 960 @ 3.2 gigahertz

gtx 650ti boost 2 gigs and 24 gigs of ram ddr3 1600mhz

case well ventalented.

hx 1000 ps corsair.

cpu is @ default clock speed of 3.2 gigahertz. voltage is underclocked on mem and cpu.

been running like this for 3 years. but wondering if it will survive a few more.

any tips would be greatly appreciated. also i just ordered a gtx 760 gigabyte how much heat will it add to my northbridge heatsink thanks.

You can ghetto mount a 80mm fan blowing the NB with a L bracket from homedepot.
I got my VRM temp lowered by 8 deg C with just a low speed 80mm hovering above them.

I haven't run into a chipset that doesnt prove itself hot to the touch in a while. Both my msi h81-e33, z77 maximus gene, and z87n wifi chipset runs hot. If you'd like just replace the paste on it to drop it a few celcius.

you could try reapplying the thermal compound on the nb heatsink, assuming it's not epoxied on.

I've seen some shody TIM application on factory boards before
like one drop off to a corner then they slap the heatsink on (with 80 grit sanded finish).

example from an old asus 775 board i'm using for parts

This, pretty much. I reapplied TIM to two S775 ASUS boards and it slashed temps by up to 12C...it's pretty sad when their own monitoring software freaks out on the NB temperature when the system is idle.

The northbridge shouldn't need a fan if the heatsink is able to do its job properly.

It's too bad TR doesn't make the HR-05 any longer, that sucker brought my P35 board down to watercooling levels. The stock heatsink which was beefy for back then averaged 50-60 degrees at 1.5v, the HR-05 barely cracked ambient with 1.7v.

I liked the HR-05 on my 775 boards too.
Recently I noticed the HR-55, dual heatpipes with an offset to the design.

Kinda hard these days how they place the chipsets under where the pcie cards are.

IIRC the Nehalem has the integrated memory controller, so I don't see the northbridge getting super hot. And they have to get pretty darn hot to cause a problem anyway. Haven't had any problems yet? You will probably be fine, as least as far as the northbridge is concerned.
