Does that mean I have to take a language again until I'm a junior? Ugh - I just got out of language because I hated it so much, I really don't want to do it again. It was always the worst class of my day. Are there usually other courses in a foreign language type to get around it?

Ahh

Sounds like you don't have much chance to proficiency test out of it.

Suck it up and go with the program. It's good for your character. If you do have some high school language, start in the same language again and it may give you enough of a head start to get through the college program without as much effort.

I think I'll stay with the same language and hope it is not that bad. Hopefully every school I apply to won't require two years language.

If I can't find the requirements on a school's website, who do I e-mail?

which college are you applying? engineering? arts and sciences?

i looked at their admissions site and it said it asks for two to four years of a foreign language in high school.

and from the arts and sciences college homepage...

click me - foreign language requirements

yes you must display proficiency in a foreign language. you can either try to test out of it or just take the classes there. you can always find another language - they do offer more than one and hopefully you'll find one you like.

Arts and Sciences. The thing is, I finished my high school requirement at my school, so I will have two years off (I'm a junior now). No way will I remember anything. I also hated foreign language (especially French). I would probably start a new language, maybe Hebrew.

I have to take 2 semesters of a language too... But mine was satisfied by classes I took in high school... Solution: go back to high school?

I didn't even have to take a test.

i had spanish in high school

i can say "matame con un ladrillo" which is along the lines of "kill me with a brick" if i remember right
and um "yo estoy una pluma" - i am a pen

i decided it was a terrible language when they told me it had four ways to say "the"

then again, i was only getting like an 80 in english at the time, why bother teaching me spanish if thats all i could do? gah

anyway, for your original question....kidnap someone, someone there has got to fold when you kidnap someone, then you dont need another language ....yeah

It's the same way at U of M. Just take it, but you don't necessarily have to take Spanish. I'm taking Dutch, and U of M offers Ojibwa and Sanskrit, to name a few. Have fun with the requirement.

So you want to go to Northwestern eh (i assume we are talking about the one in Evanston, IL)? I think you just have to suck it up and take a foreign language, it is possible to pass out of 1 year (?). I dunno cause I'm in the engineering school, but I did get credit for getting a 4 on the AP Spanish Language test.

But ya just call the registrar or the undergraduate admissions office, I"m sure they can clear it up for you.

I can't test out because I dropped language at my high school (which we are allowed to do after 3 yrs, and I took one in junior high). So I will just suck it up and will probably take something like Hebrew, which is more interesting to me.

I didn't know U of M also had a two year language requirement.
