I got a Costa Rica from Newegg today. Anyone have a Costa Rica and get it up to 2.4? Any signs of one being better than the other? (like 300a was)
Edit:My markings are:
SL668
3149A709

Pack date 1/26/02

Are we concerned about "week" information? Guess I don't know where it is.
Still putting this together, not going to fire it up til this weekend.
P4b266-C
512 Mushkin 2100 2-3-3 ram from Newegg, (came in a plain parts plastic bag w no anti-static)
Update Saturday morning (yawn),2-16-02, here is a early report of what I think I can say. I have read all and understood most of the posts up to now, correct me if I got it wrong.

I think that it's clear from the reports in this thread, that:

1. The early conclusions are based on reports of mostly 1.6a chips
2. Costa Rica chips are not better OC'ers than Malay
3. Costa Rica chips have a good as chance (100%?) of doing 133fsb at default voltage as Malays
4. More Malay chips in OC'ers hands than CR, so more successful 2.4 reports coming in for Malay's
5. More reports have come in for A726 CR chips than A709 CR chips
6. What MB you use, is a factor in how high you get your CR chip, but no more than for Malay's

It is not clear yet:

1. What, if anything, is a determining FPO/batch or week for CR chips that stand out as a better CR OC'er
2. If the A726 chips are better than the A709 chips

What I think:

1. Edit I wouldn't tell you which chip to get At this stage in the reports including those in other threads, more Malay's have hit 2.4 than CR's
2. As many CR chips easily could turn out to hit 2.4+ like Malay, as more results come in, we are not even seeing 1/100 of the chips of either country that will eventually be OC'ed
3. Only one report of CR chip doing 2.4 and a Prime95 survivor (I could be wrong)
4. Four? have hit 2.3 and reported it being stable
5. People who have CR chips, (like me) shouldn't feel like they are screwed, we got what we expected, a chip that can do 2.1Gig and maybe more. A Malay with flaky ram isn't going to OC as fast as a CR with better ram. More Malay chips out there mean more sucessful reports for them.

So give us your CR details and results, we know that here, NFS_PU doesn't stand for Need for Speed - Porsche Unleashed, it stands for Need for Speed - Pentium(IV) Unleashed

I also received a retail costa rica from Newegg today. I have it at 133x16 (2133) with default voltage and it seems to be doing fine. I am installing WinXP right now and it is zooming right along, I am thoroughly impressed. I used to have a AMD 1700+ and it was never this fast (makes me wonder about the vaildity of Sandra's CPU benchmark). I doubt I'll go any higher because I need to stay in PCI spec for smooth DVD/video/sound playback etc. This makes me wish that I didn't buy that Artic Silver 3 the other day because I just don't need it!

I'll run prime95 and some other stuff overnight to see how it holds up...

WinXP install just finished!

DRS,

Don't stop at 2133!

A number of the motherboards can keep your PCI and AGP in spec regardless of your FSB; on the Asus, the "turbo 1" option does this.

Ok bumped it up to 143 with turbo 1 on (thanks Ken!) still at default voltage (that's the one thing I never change) so we are purring along at 16x143 (2288!!) Absolutely amazing!! 45C is my top temp with stock retail HSF while running prime 95, I'll try 145 and beyond tomorrow.

Prime 95: Test 36, 37, 38.... must sleep now

funny... I posted this same question and Hard OCP, and Overclockers today and didn't really get an answer, looks like I get some info here though.

Ok I lied - I didn't goto sleep

I have the Asus p4b266-c (no sound or lan on board)

Currently running at 145 fsb, turbo 1, CAS 2 (2320) Prime 95 is close to the 1000th test. Temp is at 46C - maybe I will use that AC3 after all....

BTW: 2 sticks of Crucial 256mb CAS 2.5 DDR (got them when they were cheap too!)

Duvie,

I read something about the USB issue also but I *think* that was at 150fsb and beyond. I just printed, all this while P95 is running mind you, a document on my USB printer, synced the IPAQ via USB and finally I have been using a usb mouse - everything is looking good on my end @ 145fsb.

Can anyone confirm what the Turbo 1 option on the P4B266 does? Does it lock AGP/PCI to 66/33? or like 37/72 etc?

Thanks, cause I have this board and need to know.

With these settings Prime 95 quit after 3 hours. I'm waiting on some AC3 in the mail so I'm guessing that might do the trick - those thermal pads are too inefficent.

Just tried 150 at default voltage with mem at cas 2 & 2.5, booted into windows just fine but could not run a sandra cpu benchmark without getting an error. I may try to increase the voltage and stay at 150 when I get the AC3.

DRS, thanks for the info. Good news on the USB. Just started putting mine together, I have the P4b266-C also, where is the HDD LED pins on this MB? Did you use the Message LED pins? I see a label for HDLED on MB< but no pins/socket.

The HDD jumper is there look about 4 inches east of where you connect the power switch - it's in the setup manual also, I flipped past it 2x before I found it.

(BTW North is, at least for me, the direction your video card connector points)

I hate being at work - I just want to go home and play with my new CPU/MB combo

well, this makes me feel a little better, I just got a Costa Rica chip from Newegg, but I didn't get the P4S333 I ordered at the same time. I got my Crucial RAM in too, so now all I need is the board. I want at least 2.2 GHZ, and hoping for 2.4. Someone please tell me you got to 2.4 with a COsta Rica chip!!! Oh, btw I read somewhere that someone just got Crucial RAM with Infineon, and someone else with Samsung chips (guess there was a shortage of Micron chips or something). How do you know what chips your RAM are, mine just say MT on them, and have lots of other numbers. Thanks

WheelsCSM, MT is Micron Chips.
DRS, thanks for the location of the HDD header, I see it now.

I also got a Costa Rica chip too, from Newegg. Checked the overclockers cpu database and although there's only two post one being at 2.4 and another at 2.133, the poster of the lower speed stated that he's runing at 145*16. Wouldn't that mean he's really runing at 2.3+?!

Can't test mine out yet, since my mb and ram are still not here...

like everyone, it seems , i got my CPU (costa rica) from Newegg today, and my RAM from crucial yesterday (samsung chips), but am waiting on my motherboard. i think i should get that tomorrow, it seems like newegg auto-upgraded me to 2nd day shipping cause they were a bit late. impressive.

I want to hit 140-150 fsb with this baby. If I don't I'm gonna be angry!!

<edit>
pack date 1/25/02

I received P4B266 and 1.6A from NewEgg yesterday. It has the same markings as yours, Costa Rica and SL668.
I have the Centon Hynix brand DDR SDRAM. No one who bought this memory seems to be OCing it though.
Hopefully will get some time to do some trial runs this weekend! Can't wait.
