I was looking to do an upgrade on a freinds computer and was dissapointed to find that Northwood P4s have gone from all the stores that I use (in UK ), all you can get now are prescot chips. I cant belive they vanished so quickly, I will miss that cpu as it was so overclockable........RIP

with adequate cooling the prescott should be if anything more overclockable. of course, the northwood is faster per clock, so you lose some there.

Yeah it's sad. Not all of us have mobo's that support Prescotts. I'm slowly becoming an AMD convert due to Intels latest moves.

You are right Dopefiend about overclockers.co.uk having Northwoods in stock but they are a bit pricey, but to be expected considering how rare they are. Dont think my friend will go for that when you can get a Prescot at the same speed for less. I was just suprised how quickly they have dissapeared from stock lists.

Funny...I feel the opposite is true. If you order a $400 video card off Ebay, you're begging to get f*d IMO. Sure, its a great bargain after someone else has overclocked it, flashed it with the wrong BIOS, and otherwise molested it. I feel the same about CPUS or any other component worth more than $100; I'll take mine non-violated and brand-spankin'-new in a shiny retail box, thank you very much.

I've had to RMA 2 $300-400 video cards in the past, an Elsa GF2 Ultra and an eVGA 6800 GT. Thank God I bought both from reputable retailers, because:

-GF2: They were out of stock, so they sent me a GF3, which had just hit the market, for the same price!
-GT: NewEgg allowed me to bypass the usual RMA process by purchasing another card right then (which was shipped that day), and when they got the old card back they credited it back to my account. So instead of the usual 2-3 week wait, I had the new card the NEXT DAY for no extra $.

So good luck on Ebay. I guess the good part is that when you realize the card you bought is already ruined, you can use Ebay to scrape it off on some other poor schmuck looking to save $5.

I sure have been happy with my 2.4c running at 3.0 without any problems (completely stable), for well over a year. This with a zalman hsf on quiet mode. Have heard that the prescotts run hot, but have no personal experience. My next cpu will be AMD unless intel releases something that appeals.

I did buy one CPU off ebay, and it was a good experience. It was just a 1.8 Duron for my kid's machine. But I would never buy a main component (video, cpu, mobo) off ebay if it were going into my main rig. Software ? sure...

I recently did some heat-testing on an LGA-775 Prescott-core P4 for work, and in a 36C environment, with two 90mm case fans and the fan on full speed, it was holding 68C under load.
It was still 61C in a 22C environment.
They get hot.

screw presscotts, my brother's northwood 2.6 @3.4 is barely that hot with an about 22c environment

if nothwoods are scarce i don't see myself getting an intel for the next few years at least unless they seriously pull something out er thier @$$

My 2.8E prescott only gets to about 58c under full load at 3.5Ghz, but I am using a Thermalright SP94 and artic silver 5 to cool it.
