Northwood temps and alpha 8942 question

I'm running a P4 1.6A at 1.58v, on an asus p4s333 with an Alpha 8942 w/40CFM Panaflo fan. My questions are thus...

Asus probe shows my CPU temp at around 42C, idle, and my MB temp at around 32C. Which of these is the correct temp? And if its the first one.... shouldn't this be running cooler than that?

Also, on the 8942... I know that the 8045 can run cooler when the fan is sucking air instead of blowing it, is this also true of the 8942? Would anyone be able to refer me to somewhere that shows the difference in temps?

Thanks for the help guys

your motherboard temp is your ambient temp right. 42 deg C is not very high at all its right where it should be. I dont think you have anything to worry about.

What speed are you running right now? Also what is your full load temp? And what thermal compound and how did you apply it?

i'm running high speed lol... its at 2347, but only at 1.58v, idle, and its AS3, yes, applied properly... but i may end up re-seating the heatsink and seeing if somehow my as3 didn't apply like i would hope

Camma, I am having the same problem, however with my Volcano 7+. With the stock Intel cooler with AS2, my cpu temps at idle were 40-44 degrees. I put on the Volcano 7+ at medium speed (4800+ rpms) along with some AS3, and my temps are exactly the same? I too am thinking of tearing back off the HS and reapplying it... I know the Volcano 7+ is a much better cooler than the stock Intel...

cobra... that's my thought too, but the idea of removing the heatsink just makes my stomach turn lol... oh well, all in search of better temps!

if you do a search--most overclocked northwood running full load at +/- 50C temp. Unless they use peltier/watercooling.
Mine is arround the same temp. hope that help. Stablel running prime 95 for almost 48 hrs now.

Camma, I removed the HS, cleaned it off, then reapplied AS3 and to my dismay, this time the temps hovered around 46 degrees. Not cool at all! So, I removed the HS for a 3rd time, this time using the paste that came with the Volcano 7+ and now my temps are around 39 degrees? Don't know, but I will say that I had much better results with AS2! Maybe I got a bum tube or something? I applied AS3 to my wifes Thunderbird 1200 and her temps are hovering around 47-48 degrees. That is with a Taisol copper heatsink with a Sunom 5000 rpm fan. When I ran that same setup, in the same case, however I had the processor running at 1400, the system temps never got above 43 degrees. Same case, same setup...

Oh well, maybe I'll go order some more AS2 instead...

very odd there, i do know that AS3 works better than AS2, but you may have gotten a bad tube somehow! glad to hear your temps are down though

What do you mean which one is correct? Item 1 and item 2 is two different things, then nothing wrong with the reading.
I t looks normal also to me, I run 1.8a@2.5 vcore 1.60v, the temps are: CPU 39C idle 45C loaded and ambient 35C.
I use stock Intel HSF with ASII and 4 case fan 2 in and 2 out on Antec SX840.

my p4 1.8A @ 2400mhz/133fsb is at 27C moboard / 28C cpu right now ...mp3s playin and surfin the net.
it tops out at 29C moboard / 41C cpu. room temp is 25.5C.
using a thermaltake P4V and AS2.

however, i also have a 1.6A that i have used on this same setup. it runs a good 5-8C hotter at a lower speed and using less voltage - go figure.
