Guys, I can honestly say that feedback from folks here on AT had a direct impact on this. 2007 was remarkably lighter than 2006, and 2008 is a good improvement over 2007. We got and deserved a lot of crap for the 2005/2006 versions, but I'm very pleased by what we've gotten the team back to.

Any improvements in Norton Internet Security 2008 from Norton 360? I've never used NIS, but is the only main difference between the 2 the user interface and more customizable options for NIS?

I'm going to be installing this on my dad's pc over the weekend. As far as settings, any need to tweak them or is it pretty much good to go after install?

Lastly, Stupid question, does the 1yr subscription start when i activate my 1st PC or does it do it separate for each of the 3 machines depending on when i install them?

Excuse the ignorant question... is it possible to configure the antivirus component to use the RapidRelease updates routinely? I like frequent updates.

I will verify, but I do not beleive so. RR defs are for the corporate client with specific needs...

therefore I nominate Norton360 for crappy new product of the year without even reading about it...

Wow what a great comment! Users who have a gorilla icon and whose screen name begins with Q are actually lower intelligence than most. No, I dont have any supporting evidence, but it's based on half-cocked info I got on another messageboard 7 years ago!

Why do you even comment on something you havent even used? You base it on your experiences in BETA? And havent touched Norton in AGES? Anyway. Why bother posting if you have no idea whatsoever? Dont be a tool.

I used to work at symantec, I left a few months before the 360 launch. From what I remember it was quite a bit faster than the older suites and the rendering engine for most of the newer suites had been switched out for a much faster one. I worked on the team that made the installers that year and spent a lot of time making well automated charts of failure rates. It was significantly lower failure rate that year in the betas for nis and nav so well at least you should be sure you'll be getting it installed correctly.

 You admit you've not run either the OS or the product, yet you basically thread crap but posting how bad both are. Feel free to add to the thread, but try to add something usefull next time.

bsobel, I must admit that I am very biased against the Norton products as well and given my experiences, it will be very, very difficult for me to recommend any kind of Symantec products to anyone.
I do not want to blame you for the Norton shortcomings, but knowing that you are actually a chief software architect at Symantec, I must ask - WTF are you folks doing or have been doing all these years.

First of all what is the purpose of all those countless services that are very often conflicting with each other.
Also, what is the drama with the uninstaller?
It freakin takes 30 minute to uninstall the god damm thing.
Also, conserve the RAM!

Edit: Maybe I should of thank you? Because solving computer problems related to your software makes me a lot of money
Starting at the "Internet Security" and ending at the constant problems with the Backup Exec.

Just wanted to say, when I had moved to Vista couple months ago, I decided to give Norton a go again. Using the Internet Security Suite was out of the question, and pretty much any old version of Norton was out of the question. It's true, they just weren't that great at all.

However, since Norton 360 I have had no problems with anything. It runs great, and system performance doesn't drop at all. Sure, other users may vary with results. But some who are having serious performance issues, have you really tried to troubleshoot and see what else could be causing problems? Other software that may conflict with what you're doing?

This is the first time I've installed a Norton product and have been pleased to run it. This Vista+Norton = sh!t is sh!t.

I'm not going to completely say that its really that much faster. A huge part of it is probably that everyone running vista now is running much faster computers. Hell I worked there, and its not like you can make a virus scanner slower every year even if you tried. I mean there are obviously improvements but you are also running it on a faster computer probably on vista, seeing as vista computers all seem to have at least 2 cores, 1 - 4gb ram etc... I would assume it would work pretty fast no matter how badly or well it was coded.

For the first time since Winchester drives went out I don't have a norton product installed. Tried to upgrade from SystemWorks and Internet Security to N360. The advertising is misleading (if not false) - N360 does not replace Systemworks - it is missing major utilities like WinDr. Worse: tech support confirmed that with N360 installed, you cannot install the systemworks or its utilities. I'm expecting a refund any day.
Strike 1 - Why would you buy a norton product that is incompatible with other norton products?

Strike 2 - tech support was a joke. One guy out of the five I've dealt withactually understood english and what I was trying to do. The rest read from the same uninstall, reinstall script with no idea about the program.

Strike 3 - I was a little surprised to read the contract. I'm no lawyer, but it reads like you are renting the program for a year, not just buying updates & maintanence for a year. Listen for the howls this time next year when whole programs start shuting down.

Strike 4- once I discovered I didn't want anything but the utilities, no-one at norton could figure out how I could keep the utilites without loading systemworks at start up. That makes no sense, as all systemworks would do for me without NAV or Internet security is Nag me to buy an upgrade. Did I say tech support was worthless?

Up side - after uninstalling all norton products, I now have a new machine. Even though I switched to Symantic Corporate AV (I get it free), my start times are faster by a magnitude of 10. My programs run faster, and I have a notable increase in available memory. Admittedly, I didn't run N360 long enough to be sure, but I didn't notice the jump untill the machine was "norton free". Lets see, diskkeeper is 1/2 the price, and is mine to keep. The built in windows firewall ain't bad, especially behind my router's firewall. Think I'll save myself the 100/year.

the utilities for norton system works im not sure are really all that great anymore. maybe in the win 9x days.

norton speeddisk is a shell of windows disk defragmenter.
windoctor is basically a reg cleaner and shortcut checker.
and one button checkup.. uh yeah that basically just runs norton cleanup.

i think it comes with some other stuff now like processviewer (but you can get stuff from sysinternals that is free that does that) and system optimizer which is very tweakUI like, and checkit which is made by another company.

sav CE has always been lighter weight since it doesnt have to do things like have a fancy GUI for end users, or do a lot of DRM checks or virus update checks, or use skins and xml / html based front ends. that said, usually most end users cannot get it because of the way they license corporate stuff (well unelss you pirate it)

i do have to agree with you, when i was there i listened in to some of the tech supprot calls ( people really do monitor for quality assurance) and yeah its some offshore company and they were very rude. rude to the point of me busting up in my cube laughing but still, i would hate to ever have to call.
