The $3 version is the 90 day trial copy.

NAV2003 OEM 1 year version is $16.

How does that really make sense?

LOL. Their pricing is messed up. They have Norton Utilities 2002 for $6, and it probably comes with a year of virus updates. Internet Security 2002 is $10.99, and it is listed as coming with a year of updates. They also have Systemworks Pro 2003 with one year of updates for $16, or you can get Systemworks Standard 2003 for $17. Hm, hard choice ...

FWIW their ground shipping for a single product seems to be around $5.

The 90 day OEM versions are normally referred to as trial versions. They have the same features as the 1 year versions they just don't last as long.

I could be wrong but the 90 day versions are the same so I don't think you can easily reinstall with a new 90 day disk when your first 90 days runs out. You don't type in a serial number on the 90 day OEM installs. Also, ordering 4 of the 90 day disks would cost me $17.26 when ordering the 1 year disk would be $20.92. For a difference of $3.66 I would rather order the 1 year version and not have to worry about updating it every 3 months, assuming that the updates would work.

They only ship UPS and ground is the cheapest for me at $4.92 for 1 disk. They calculate weight using 1.5lbs which is a little high considering you get a CD in a paper sleeve. I guess the shipping box and peanuts make up the other 1.4 pounds. It would be nicer and cheaper if they used USPS first class or priority shipping.

BTW, this looks like a good site to add to my list of etailers who sell OEM software.

Get the Systemworks 2003 OEM for around $18 shipped (search through past forum threads). This is a much better deal and you get a year of anti virus updates.

Or, if you don't mind rebates and have something to use for an upgrade rebate, get SystemWorks 2003 Retail at Amazon for -$7.01 (i.e., a $7.01 profit) after rebates.

Geez, I get the 90-day copy of NAV for free on the CD every time I buy a FIC motherboard. But I'll copy it to a CD and sell it to you for $3 if you want.

Hi everyone,
I don't post here obviously it is my first post. I always seem to be the late comer on the hot deals.
Anyhow this thread caught my attention. The NAV OEM version that you found will give you the full version of NAV like was previously mentioned. But a trick to having NAV is that if you buy the disk and you subscription is about to expire you can uninstall the disk and reinstall it. This will give you another full 90 days. You are completely within the licensing agreement to do so for the life of the product. However for the NAV 2004 they will have an activation key to prevent this. But till then it will work just fine.

FPSguy mentioned the Norton Utilities possibly coming with a 1 year subscription... NAV is not part of the Utilities program. So that would not provide virus protection.

Plus the NAV 2003 program has features for worm/trojan removal and IM scanning that were not included in the 2002 version of the Symantec software.

My Epox board also came with the 3-month version. Check your CD if you, or a friend, have an Epox or FIC board.

The only difference with 2003 is that there may be a bug fix or two, and that you don't have to immediately download updates.

If the updates are included in the cost of 2002, and I save a 40-50+ dollars taking the time to download them, then sign me up!

My verdict is no matter what version of these you buy, it's a sweet deal to protect against the nasties of the web... that is, if you are worried about that sort of thing

(Never had a virus in my 4 years of computing. I installed a free copy of NAV every now and then and nothing shows up.)

Getting the 2002 version would be like buying... last years model! Hey, seems like a good deal, and I guess it would be for someone who doesn't have any anti-virus at all (a surprisingly large amount of people unfortunately). Those of you who spend a lot of time on the internet, downloading things from file-sharing apps, etc. would be better off with the latest antivirus software: 2003.

My reasons: I've seen where NAV2002 will detect virus activity, and stop it, but it won't remove it completely. The virus was only being detected and stopped when it would "pop up" to do it's things (backdoor virus, not always active, only when there is a connection to the internet). Upon upgrading to 2003, this very same virus was detected immediately and removed even prior to updating virus definitions.

If you don't have any antivirus software at all, by all means, get something. If you want a the better product, get the latest version.

BTW, I do remember a time when Norton Utilities used to really screw around with windows, but the last 3 versions I've seen all work extremely well, don't you down with unnecessary system resourse hogging apps, and actually find and fix problems.

IMHO: good deal, but the better deal would be the Systemworks Pro 2003 with one year of updates for $16 as described by FSPguy.

Not true on the uninstall and reinstall reactivating your updates subscription. There may be a registry hack to do this but a simple uninstall/reinstall won't. A reformat of your drive will certainly do the trick though.

Okay you can apparently do this with the 90 day OEM but the 1 year retail didn't last time I tried it.

No reformat needed. Just need to make sure you do a full uninstall.
To do this you can you use the removal tools at www.symantec.com site.

This will remove everything entirely including the registy.

Just a bit of 'inside info'

msBehave is right, I just did it because I was infected with a virus discovered in April 2003 and my last update was last year. Uninstall/Reinstall worked like a charm.

The 2003 version is a little better just for the fact that when sending email, it displays the progress meter in the lower right corner instead of in the middle of the screen like the 2002 version does.

Norton gets ripped on by people, but I think its the best virus scanner out there. Many of the others I have tried don't scan email attachments correctly, or at all.

Which Norton utility removes the registry entries. The one available for download says:

Rnav2003.exe is a utility that manually uninstalls the program files and registry entries that are installed by NAV 5.0/2000/2001/2002/2003. It does not remove the files or registry keys for the virus definitions, subscription information, entries in the Task Scheduler, or other shared files.

Is there another one that I'm not seeing?
