AVG is fine if you don't have anything better but I'd rather pay $25 (or FAR) for a more robust antivirus program.

This could readily develop into a thread problem but I must say that there have been comparison tests done and AVG came out ahead of both McAFee and Norton. So to say that you'd rather pay $25 for a "more rubust" antivirus program, is kinda silly. AVG owns them. Yes, McAfee and Norton do have some sort of spyware protection that AVG doesn't but who needs them when there is AdAware and Spybot S&D? I have at least 10 customers that I have converted from either McAfee or Norton to AVG, along with switching to the free Zone Alarm firewall program. All of them have been problem free every since and I have no reason to think otherwise.
Trust me, you don't have to spend the big bucks to get the top level protection.
I apologize to the OP if they think this is borderline crapping; I didn't intend it to be so. I just truely believe that the free programs are better than the costly ones. I'm also pretty sure that there will be many that agree.
As a "back-track" I will say that the various FAR, etc programs that McAffee and Norton run are "decent deals". They are just not something I would do.

Antivirus Roundup

While that may only be one review, I've read other feedback over the last year that makes me steer clear of AVG. I do consider it (spywareinfo & Shad) to be a valuable resource when recommending Antivirus & spyware applications. Even from my own personal experience AVG is not a viable solution since there are other free AV apps that do a much better job.

Trust me, you don't have to spend the big bucks to get the top level protection.

This is exactly what I have been using for a couple months now with no problems. I use the included firewall in sp2, and the avg antivirus, and spy bot s&d, and have not had problems what so ever.

not to heat this thread up any further, but I used to like norton, because it did not cause too many problems with existing apps and oss but it is not that great in particular in dealing with trojans. My current favorite is trendmicro's internet security suite which can be found for free (30 day trial) at www.trendmicro.com .

P.s.: that review in one of the first posts seems to be a valid single user experience - but where is the detection procedure?

McAfee sucks big time, and has known issues. Norton is much better on resources, but has some nagging issues as far as I'm concerned. Trend micro pretty much rules both of them in the enterprise space, but costs more. Go figure. So I run without...

I agree that t\Trend is the current leader in the enterprise space - but I beg to differ wrt cost. In the enterprise space their cost is about 60% of that of Norton and the renewal is MUCH lower.

In the personal space there are not as many offers like "NAV free AR" - BUT I have seen Trendmicro offer it for $19.99OTD from time to time and that's a heck of a deal for a great AV Proagram that also contains a firewall.

Well for what it is worth I was running NAV corp and having odd issues. Uninstalled it and installed AVG trial and upon full system scan a Trojan Horse was found that NAV never caught in over a year. Not trying to thread crap but I sure was surprised.

The rebate requires either the proof of purchase (under the inner flap) OR the UPC so, yes, you can get both rebates without any hassle. I've done it many times. You can use pretty much anything for the upgrade rebate (previous NAV, other competing products, etc). If you don't have anything you can pick up the FAR McAfee software that is also being offered and use that as for the upgrade. See the other Staples thread (linked 5 messages above).

Edit: Forgot to mention that both products I mentioned above are sold out online in the San Diego area so you'll have to visit the B&M stores.

norton also has the highest system slowdown: over 6% aqccording to one review.
As a gamer, that's a huge slowdown. That same review puts Panda AV at the top with regard to system performance hit.
