Norton AntiVirus 2005 installation woes

Hello,

Having massive difficulties with a computer. Cyrix I think 6x86MX 166MHz, 64MB, Win98SE.
I know this machine i rubbish, but its my mums friends PC.
Nav 2005 says its requirements are 166MHz+, 64MB RAM, 90MB space.
This is what this system has. She previously had Nav2003 running fine but her subscription expired.

I tried installing Nav2005 upgrade over Nav 2003 .... didnt work. So I uninstalled.
Heaps of error messages blah blah blah.

So I formatted (after backing up her data) and reinstalled Win98SE fresh.
Talked to Symantec support they said to just install it as if it was a full version.
I did and same thing. Error messgaes ahoy. There was nothing else but Win98 on the machine!!!!! no other programs.
Ive also tried fresh install of Win98, then load Nav2003 and load 2005 on top of it.
I loaded NAV 2005 onto a fresh install of Win2000 pro I had and it went on fine. Diff Computer though.

Error Messages are;
1 - A necessary file could not be loaded. C:\Prog....\NAVOPTRF.DLL. Code 1002,1
2 - NAV has encountered an Internal program error. Uninstall and Reinstall. Code 3030,27

During installation I never got prompted for the Product Key as I did during the Win2k install.

Is this PC just to crap to take NAV2005???
Symantec requirements say otherwise, but Ive run out of patience.

Symantec support is a freaking joke.
I was put on hold for 40min and I just had to hang up.

I doubt it has anything to do with your troubles but that Cyrix is likely not running at 166mhz. That is probably it's PR rating. It's probably 133mhz. That should be fast enough for NAV2005 though.

I think it lists IE5.5 or better as a requirement also.

Use the freeware antivirus software Antivir. It uses much less system resources than NAV2005 and should work on that PC, it works on my Pentium1 90Mhz laptop, it also does not make you register like AVG and has a better detection rate than AVG. See my review of Antivir and NAV2005 here.

I ran into a CRAP load of problems with NAV 2005. I would just stay away from it. It took me about 6 hours of screweing with it to fix the problem.

All my problems came from upgrading to a new larger hard drive. NAV2005 freaked out and said I need to uninstall and reinstall. Well the uninstall failed. Symantec's knowledgebase articles on uninstalling didn't work. But by damn, I got it uninstalled and reinstalled eventually.

It does have IE 6.0 installed. During NAv2005 installation it said it needed it so I installed.
So the system has:
Windows 98SE
Internet Explorer 6.0
Nav 2005 not working.

The reason I might not be able to just use another program is that she just got the copy of Nav2k5 brand new. She paid some $$$ figure for it. I've already given up. The machine is so slow it takes hours just to uninstall/reinstall stuff. Time = Money.
Im gonna just install Nav2003 since and leave it. Anyway she now has another 12 month license (from the format/reinstall). But unfortunaetly has a copy of Nav2005 she cant use.

This is why I dont use Symantec products.
