Please note that installing this Beta may uninstall some Symantec and/or other third-party programs already installed on your machine. Please ensure that you have your prior product media (i.e. compact disks) so that you can re-install your products after the Beta version expires. This beta release will expire in 30 days. At that time, you will need to uninstall the Beta software and re-install your prior Norton product. Or, you can purchase the full version and install it.

Is this a paid beta? I can't imagine any user who considers themselve savvy enough to participate in a beta would willingly install NAV on their system otherwise.

This beta test version of Norton AntiVirus 2010 is the fastest, most proactive protection against viruses, Trojans and worms we have ever offered.

Then why does it list 300 MHz processor as a minimum requirement, and 256MB RAM (512MB for the recovery tool)?

I'm pretty sure the versions from the late 90's didn't require a system this powerful.

If those of you hating on NAV/NIS 2009+ have zero experience with either, just kindly stop talking. I've probably run Symnrt more than most on this board, but never have I had to run it to fix a machine with 2009 installed.

I also have very few run into infections and the clients I work with are quite capable if infecting machines quickly. I'll be the first to admin pre-2008 NAV/NIS were garbage, but their new stuff is really good.

Have they fixed the fact that it slows down file I/O applications by more than a factor of 1000x (yes, I really mean 1000x, that is not an exaggeration, it makes the difference between seconds and hours on sourcesafe syncing to latest versions of code for example)?

What about the fact that it prevents windows chkdsk from getting the access it needs to fix any filesystem corruption issues, even if you disable the real-time scan and also disable all Symantec services? You actually have to uninstall it to run chkdsk. Or at least this was the case the last time I had to use it as a VPN requirement, which admittedly was about 3 years ago.

You were running 2009 three years ago?

People put not effort into research.

He doesn't know 2008 was a heavily modified 2007. He also doesn't know 2009 was a complete rewrite. But 2006 sure sucked!!!

I'll continue to recommend Norton's 2009 line to anyone who asks for advice.

I'm quite pleased with my NIS 2009 & plan on getting NIS 2010 when it comes out in September.

Actually, I think the problem is that Norton had for YEARS the most sloppy, slow and utterly unimpressive anti-virus product available and they charged for it.

I'm open to the possibility that 2009/10 could be great, but it's going to take some convincing. When you release terrible products for years at a time, I'm not going to want to rush back to using your products, even if you promise they are better.

True, but 30 days should be sufficient for one to see if one likes the software or not.

I love NAV 2009, it is definitely lite on the resources.

There is a 90 day trial available thru google

I had to uninstall Norton on a client's computer. I found out that Norton 360 and Windows Update cause the Norton component that updates Norton to eat CPU cycles make the computer run really slow. I could not find a fix at all on the internet so I uninstalled it and gave them AVG. I still wouldn't recommend Norton.

So you replaced an anti virus with 98% detection rates to one with 85% detection rates? AVG is an extremely lackluster performer.
