Norton doesnt open?

I installed NAV 2004 on a machine of my friends and it would not open.. i thought maybe there was a virus in it.. so i formatted it from teh restore disks and didnt touch anything else and installed it again.. and it does the same thing.. i double click on it.. the cursor turns to a arror/hourglass and then goes back to regular arrow and nothing opens.. not even an error message.

what causes this? any ideas how to fix it?

Was there a previous installation of NAV 2004 on it or any other version of NAV; Norton stuff can be bloody hell to deal with as you can see if you go to the Symantec website and see the tons of "uninstall" instructions for their products. As for formatting the drive from restore disks, I don't think that will help much. What I would do if I was going to reformat would be to use the disk manufacturer's hard drive utilities (IBM/Hitachi Drive Fitness Test, Maxtor Powermax, etc) to do a complete low-level format of the drive, then Fdisk, partition and format it and THEN do a clean os install and then install NAV 2004.

If it's been formatted already it's not like he's got anything to lose, eh?

I have the same problem, or a similar problem. But, when I right click on a file or folder (or drive), there is a functional "Scan with Norton Antivirus" option in the context menu. And I created a link from the Norton AV folder for Live Update (LUALL.EXE) in my start menu. I update NAV more often and reliably than does their automatic updater.

So the fact that clicking on the Norton AV icon doesn't bring up the console menu doesn't really bother me. I can scan whatever I want, and I can download updates whenever I want. Just make sure when you bring up the task manager that NAVAPSVC.EXE is listed under Processes. That is your real-time protection.

Go to Control Panel ->Administrative Tools -> Services. Norton Antivirus Automatic Protection Services should be in the list, with Status=started and Startup Type=Automatic. If the installation has gotten this far, then your software is installed, even though you can't open the console.

I still scan everything thats downloaded onto my machine anyway except regular email without attachments. The one time in my life that I got a trojan, I learned that it wasn't in either Norton/Symantec or McAfee's virus databases. I found it by running Computer Associates online virus scanner. It was one of several variants of a Rawbot trojan that was in their database, but it seemed that no other company had any data on it.
