Does anyone know how to use this. I was told that I would need to use this to recover info my hard drive (40 g, gone ) which just crashed. I will get a copy and use tonight. I hope I am able to save my data. When I boot up using that hard drive, it takes me to the Windows XP screen, then the next thing i see is an entirely black screen with the curser, but everything else is black.
When i install my 8 gig drive and take out the 40, all is fine. This hasnt been an issue ever the last year.

did you ghost your HD BEFORE it crashed?? If not getting a copy of Ghost at this point will do you NO GOOD AT ALL.

http://www.farstone.com/home/en/index.shtml

they have a utility RecoverIt that will help you recover LOST or deleted data, but NOTHING will restore your system if you didn't do something PREVIOUS to allow you to restore it.

Is there a chance you can into safe mode?

See if you can disable things in the startup that might be causing the problem for you to boot into XP.

Sounds like a bad drive. But you can buy laptop hard drive converted kit to mount it to regular EIDE controller for desktop. See if you can actualy view the contents of the hard drive. If it allows you too, it could be Windows issue and maybe repair install of Windows can fix it for you.

have you tried booting the the xp cd, going to the recovery console and using these commands?

c:\fixboot<enter> then tell it yes if the option comes up it will attempt to repair the boot sector data on your hard drive, then,
c:\chkdsk /r<enter> this will run a full checkdisk on your files and filestructure and attempt to repair you data files and free space, this fixes a lot of problems and can help you from having to do a re-load.

from the sound of it you have some corrupted files in your boot sector, but if your at the console you might as well run both just in case there are other errors on your drive. this should fix you up, as I've seen your problem countless times. unless you drive is spinning down and back up repeatedly or has a ticking sound odds are your drive is still good, just you data has been fubar'd.

f8 doesn't do it on the cd, boot to the xp cd, and where you press enter to install xp you will also see the option to press r to enter the recovery console type r instead of pressing enter.

Try unplugging all you uneeded Hardware (USB, Firewire, Externals) and then go down to the Basics (HD, RAM, CPU, Vid) and see if that'll do it...Happen to me before and I recovered this way.

Have you tried just making the bad drive slave and putting it back in, and accessing it from the drive that will work? Its possible you may be able to get to the files that way. I'll do that a lot when I change drives just to copy directly to the new drive.
