Norway is best place to live, China moves up

My beef is I dont think Iceland should be number 3 right now. Norway, Australia, Canada, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and France I can understand, but I lived in Iceland for 18 months.
While I thought it was awesome I certainly would not put it at the number 3 slot, especially when their banks collapsed and they were hurting real bad.
Not too keen on Japan either, since the population density is ridiculous.

Am not suprised the U.S. is slipping. I am not exactly sure about universal health care but its interesting to note we are (supposedly) the only industrialized nation without it.


Discuss? All points? Healthcare only? Other quality of life issues?

You'll notice that the best places to live (except Australia) are nice northern latitude, or cool climate areas. I've been saying for years that it's heat that drives people batshit insane...just look at the middle east. I'd be a crazy warmonger if I had to live there too.

Before their banks collapsed Iceland was like any other sophisticated northern European country. Same culture and attitudes as their Norwegian & Danish cousins. I would almost have called it a little island paradise.
Many Hollywood celebs vacation up there because nobody thinks to look for them up in Iceland. Theres a buttload of awesome sulfur spas.

Agreed, my company works closely with a company based out of Iceland. When the economy tanked they took it hard and freaked. Now the way they explain it the entire country is ready to close up shop and return to the stone age.. Its s shame, damn nice peoples.

A UN index hardly says much. They include life expectancy rates which are always higher in white European boutique societies without minorities or even militaries. Look at the mayhem in any large city's ER's - there's nothing like that in Norway or Iceland. The US also has higher infant mortality because of fertility drugs and black populations that have 2x the infant mortality of any other group. For the past 60 yrs its been the US and NATO that made these little socialist, guppy nations viable. If something like WWII comes up today with US degenerating they are toast.

When I read an article about this, they stated that the data they used to make their determinations was gathered before Iceland's implosion, so its placement should be viewed in that context. As well as the study itself, even. A snapshot of the world of yesterday.

are you saying that other countries don't have fertility drugs or militaries, or that places like Oslo, Melbourne, Sydney, Toronto, Vancouver, Paris etc aren't large cities on par with the largest of ours, or that other countries don't have large minority populations?

Don't you think that having a large segment of the population with very high infant mortality rates would be something that should be factored into such and index?

Furthermore, at least large cities have access to good medical care, something that is often lacking in less urbanized societies.

Look at the so-called "melting pot" of America. People spend most of their time fighting each other intead of solving problems. Illegals pour over by the millions and rape the public services while carrying drugs along with them. No one does anything about it.

Its not that bad here like some think.

The main problem is bloody Icesave, the UK and Holland are demanding that the Icelandic public pay for mistakes made by a private bank that misused EU laws. Even Gordon Brown himself has said the public should not pay for this... that is the UK public, to hell with the rest.

We are in some process at the World Bank, getting loans and getting advice, but that advice is usualy bad as some US paper detailed (was released few days ago, the recomendations from the World Bank are actually making the recession worse in 20 of 30 countries it oversees now.

The problem is that we are getting loans from loads of other countries as well but it all hinges on the World Bank... and the World Bank having a few board members from the UK are saying nothing gets done untill Icesave is solved. Those are two unreleated issues.

Also the UK has pushed to halt our entrance to the EU since that would mean we could sue on a common ground that what the UK did by freezing our assets in the UK was wrong and harmful. Not forgetting that the legal framework the banks worked under was from the EU, which means if we were a full member we could challange and that way the blame and burdern would shift to the EU member states overall.

I lived in Norway for a little while, unless it broke loose and drifted way way further South I say BS on it being the best place to live.

Yeah, if you like freezing cold and about 3 hours of daylight during Winter months I suppose it's cool. Jeebus, a freaking bottle of cheap whiskey was about $140. I don't care if it's full of tall blonds - not my kind of place at all.

One of the biggest reasons why Norway is #1 in that list is because they're a major oil exporter. They use the oil revenue to finance their little egalitarian paradise.
