Quoted from the site:

"Their stated goal is `a new computing platform for the next century that will provide for improved trust in the PC platform.' Palladium is software that Microsoft says it plans to incorporate in future versions of Windows; it will build on the TCPA hardware, and will add some extra features."

Hey, don't worry. According to them, we won't have to worry about it for another hundred years. You may have wanted to post in Off Topic instead though.

Should be in Off Topic, but it would be a repostanyways.

People need to slow down with all the paranoia. The simple fact is that as long as the people sitting on our end of the PC are as intelligent (most likely more so) than the people sitting in Redmond anything they create can and will be bypassed. Not to mention the fact that if MS Windows becomes that much of a PITA to use, people will just stop using it. No one is forcing people to use it now, and there are plenty of excellent OS's out there waiting to replace it.

They forget one big thing, and that is the businesses and people that buy the goods are the ones who can dicate what these goods will consist of, and I don't think people as a whole will stand for this.

I don't necc understand why this is a bad deal for users. You guys don't like Palladium and TCPA because it enforces software copyright and DRM? So we can't run pirated software and unlicensed music now... hmmm...

People don't like TCPA/Palladium because it has a very strong potential of intruding on your privacy/personal space.

The article indicates that this will be a feature that can be turned on and off?

Is this essentailly a managed desktop enviroment? I.e. one where system admins for a company can make it so that you can't install anything not approved (which already exists and is in use with XP)?

I don't have as much faith in the general public. I mean, here we are using and (constantly) upgrading Windows, an OS which isn't too hot (in my opinion), yet nobody cares. Despite nuisances like product activations, constant patch updates, and frequently crashing programs, Windows is still the most popular OS by FAR. I think people will buy into just about any scheme cause they're too lazy to explore other possibilities (whether software or hardware). I mean, XP had all sorts of freaky security features and yet there was no horde of people rushing to switch to Linux or a Mac. The big IT companies will find a way, either immediately or gradually, to implement what they want and we'll buy into it. The only reason I disagree with that article is that it seems the author is predicting doom in like the next year, whereas I think it'll be a few years before we see a full-fledged implementation of this "Palladium" scheme.
