Not drinking 3 or 4 days a week for liver health

So I've read that doctors say you should have 2 days in a row without alcoholic drinks or at least 1 day to help protect your liver. If my math is right that works out to be the same as in the thread title.

I've been trying to do this. Any drinkers here who have any luck with this? Meaning the discipline, ability or whatever it takes for it. If this should go in the drinking thread that's fine. Btw the same doctors say it should be no more than "four units" each day you drink. Well I got it down to 1 or 2 units (drinks). Bully for me I guess.

Edit: Meant to add the doctors said your liver will be ok for most people with these rules.

My liver ought to be like Superman. I haven't had a drink in a dozen years or more (and rarely drank alcohol prior to that).

Luck? You mean, like an ability to not drink?

If you have difficulty not drinking, you should probably discuss that with your doctor.

If you drink alcohol every day of the week you are an alcoholic. There is no easy way to say it. However, when you are young you think you will live forever. This will probably pass with age or your upset stomach and bad headaches.

It could be there are two types of people who drink. Some people can have a drink or two of alcoholic beverages and just stop, then there are some people who just keep drinking alcohol till they pass our or there is nothing left.

When I was young and in the Military I drank quite a bit. However, some time later I decided to quit and I have not had an alcoholic beverage for about 20 years. I take that money and waste it on computers instead.

1 beer a day consider alcoholic? I normally have 1 beer 4-5 times a week.

I used to drink alcohol every day, 1 or 2 beers in the evening. Now I drink a lot less because I am more stressed out and more often depressed.

Now I am lucky if I have more than 1 or 2 beers in a week.

A diet high in fat, being overweight, basically a poor diet can be the same as the diet of a heavy alcoholic.

We'll agree to disagree.
Yeah I do too. It's really how you drink, not if you have one every day. If you have trouble stopping, then it could be a sign of a problem.

When I used to drink, I would almost always get shit faced or drink as much as was available (and then want more). It didn't really make me think at the time, but looking back that was early evidence of my later alcoholism struggles.

If someone says 'i have a drink everyday' I immediately assume they have a problem with alcohol.

Try water.

I drink a lot but I drink lots of water as well - like 150oz of water a day. Water helps keep your liver healthy. Dont over drink though.

I don't think a person having a glass of wine or their favorite beer with dinner every night counts as an alcoholic. Like I said, it's *how* they drink that counts. If they can't stop at just one, then yeah maybe they've got a problem. Otherwise, I don't see it.

By this definition, like 80% of Europeans are alcoholics, right?

A couple glasses of wine, 2 beers or a couple bourbons is fine every day. Drinking a 5th of vodka every night or a 12 pack of beer is abuse.

So if I have a single cup of coffee a day am I now a coffeeholic too?

Get over yourself. Some people drink simply because they enjoy the flavor and routine of a drink. Be that coffee, beer, chocolate milk or OJ.

Precisely. I'll have 2-4 beverages a night, usually one with dinner and one after as a dessert at some point. Sometimes I have another after that, sometimes not. Generally if I drink just one drink and then stop, I fall asleep

Huh. Every doctor I've ever spoken to seemed to believe that no one should imbibe alcohol ever. Maybe they just say that to hopefully cause people to at least think about it before they drink. Anyway, I easily hit a couple of weeks between drinking sessions. It's so hard to find room for alcohol when you're watching your calorie intake.

Being unable to cut back on alcohol intake when you clearly wish to is an indication of a larger problem though. For a normal person it's as simple as deciding they won't drink for a couple of days and it's as much as done. In fact, they'll go days without drinking without even really feeling like they're doing anything special. I'd t least pay attention to that tendency if I were you.

I posted some time ago I gave up drinking for two years but that ended last month. So for a month I've been drinking almost every day one or two ounces in mixed drinks, not downing shots. Not going to mention what kind of booze because that gets toward going into the main drinking thread on ATOT.

I just think I better have that one or two dry days in between just in case I don't stop drinking for a long time. Difficult but maybe necessary to keep my liver in good shape.

Just don't drink on nights that you work the next day. Keep drinking for nights before days off, or on days off.

I can't imagine drinking alcohol so soon before work. There is always the risk of actually smelling of liquor when yo are at work, and even though you are sober and 100% fine, people might not think so.
