I handed out 2 resumes. One was declined (I suspect they only opened the position publicly as a formality) and the other I interviewed for and was hired for the job.
Long story short, if you fit the skills a company is looking for, and you know how to present yourself, you'll get opportunities. Now, you may go out there being a guy who just wants A job. But you're MUCH better off being a guy out there who wants THIS job. IE - Cater your resume to the position being offered. If the position speaks of Cisco routing/switch/etc, suggest that you wish to focus on Cisco networking topology. If you want to be a virtualization guy, put it in your resume.
Point being, you don't have A resume that you send out to 40 companies. You need to have a resume that you start with and re-purpose for A company.
