This thread inspired me to reach over and test my Back-UPS ES 500... Worked fine.. However, If I use the APC software for XP, then it won't work right and my computer will just turn off. Luckily, XP has a built-in battery thing and everything works great.

$2000 seems rather low--wasn't your computer damaged?

No didnt damage the computer, melted most of the external wires, burned the hardwood floor and smoke damage. Interesting note they called me friday and left me a message to call them back. My guess is it has to do with the recall but not sure.

How long have you had the UPS when the problem occurred? Did it overheat on the first day? I've had mine powered on 24/7 since Christmas (it was a present from my wife -- a present only a true geek could appreciate, from a wife who truly understands a geek, what more can a geek ask for )and is not warm to the touch at all.

It was about five months, the good news is we just got home when it caught fire, if we we 20 = 30 mins later we would have lost the house.

Luckily my UPS is Cyberpower brand. No recalls on this brand yet.

btw...What kind of runtime were you people getting with those small UPS? My Cyberpower 725SL is rated at 400w and 725 AV, and yet I only get 9 minutes of backup time. Should I be getting more time? The box on my UPS says it should last 20-65 minutes! I have only my computer and monitor plugged in, and it only lasts 9 minutes. Here is my system.

Antec 400w case
(2) 7200rpm HD
(4) case fans
19" Monitor

Yikes. I'll have to check mine and let my roommate know about it, too. We both got in on the deal at Office Depot a few months ago. Thanks for the heads up.

A great man once told me: "It is what it is..."

Your PC is drawing sufficent current to make it only 9 minutes. Just take your nine minutes and run.

Well, I was playing around with Electricity yesterday. When I unhock one of the wire, the power kinda go out then slowly come back and go out. It kept doing that, kinda weird. But my big UPS smell weird. So I will check out the model later and see if it is also recall. I mean, I don't think it should make that weird smell. Something burn I am sure. but it still work.

The BE350U is not listed in the recall. All of the listed models are BK-xxx, not the BE ones that CC had.

If your Cyberpower unit overheated you would never know about it .. they couldnt take a 2.1 million unit hit like that. Its pretty simple for everyone trying to figure out if they have the unit or not. Look on the back .. small white label .. if it sais BK350 or BK500 its a recall .. otherwise NO .

Thanks for posting here. I seldom check any of the other forums. I check my BK-350 and the serial number is in the recall group. Thanks, again. That could be your good deal of the year!

Thanks, wouldn't have known if I hadn't seen it here.

APC sends me emails all the time about how great their products are, but they haven't contacted me about this yet. Any other registered owners actually been contacted?

There probably would be little reparations if your house did burn down in that time, as the recall clearly indicated to immediately unplug your UPS and not to reactivate it.
