Yoiks...and away! Just isn't worth it - the Ultra edges it out in FPS for $200 less. By the time games appear to take advantage of the features, the Geforce4 will be out at this price Of course, if I was rollin' in the green it might be another story

*sigh* My state of the art Geforce 2 GTS is about to become state of the ancient. :/
Oh well, such is life.

Sweet mother of Jehosaphat! As much as I cream at the thought of these graphics cards that come out every few months, you figured they'd take into consideration that the general public isn't insane enough to spend over half a grand on a VIDEO CARD!!! I wish they would wait at least a year to bring out something new! I can't afford all this stuff, and it makes me feel slow and inadequate the second something newer and faster then the stuff I just bought for the same price..... SIGH it never ends..... I've been doing this since the days of Commander Keen and Wolf 3D. I remember when I thought a 4 Meg video card was ridiculous, and that I would never run my games at 800x600 much less the 1600x1200 that some people run them at nowadays.......

I just felt my money burning and my nads crawl up into my belly when I watched the Doom 3 thing at Macworld.... ouchie.

Is it just me or have video card prices become super high in the past year or 2? I remember when $100 for a card was a lot and now it seems that all new cards cost at least $300 or more. Oh well, I'll just tough it out with my Voodoo 5500 for a few more months.

I don't think it's that much of an issue. They'll release a GF3-MX type card in the MSRP-$200-range soon, and maybe another one that's in the $400-range (assuming this is the 'Ultra' of GF3's and there isn't a faster GF3 coming in a month).

Cards haven't gotten more expensive, just the expensive ones have gotten more publicity.

Well,

1) I thought Hercules said the MSRP was $529.99

2) That's was the MSRP on retail brand GF2 Ultras a month ago

3) GeForce2s and MXs aren't going to drop that much, and I doubt GTSs will be much cheaper than the $128 price point of last Christmas. Look at the price of a real 32MB TNT2 (not the M64) vs the GeForce2 MX. The only thing that's happened is that Pros and Ultras got a lot closer in price. Also look at the new MX chips nVidia has introduced - and the 64MB MXs for that matter. Those are an additional buffer that'll prop up the floor under GeForce2 GTSs. The only thing that would put price pressure on the GTS is a reasonably priced Radeon 2, and who knows when that'll show up. It doesn't look like the $80 Radeon LE has done a whole lot to GF2 GTS prices.

The other thing that might have done it was 3dfx's Sage, but we all know what happened to that.

i thought hercules was out of business, guess not.

nvidia just keep adding minor feature to their card and boot up the price of their gf, and of course stock price.

I stick don't see game taking fully advantage of gf1 ddr. I felt stupid that I get rid of my aiw 128 to get the geforce ddr.

I paid $250 for my Creative Annihilator Pro a year ago, and I've used it for a total of 4 days.

I think the hugely inflated prices are because making ddr ram that can go that fast is terribly hard and costs a lot of money in the first place.. they have to basically hand pick the ultra cards because I bet a lot of them fail because of the ram not going fast enough. I think once ddr becomes easier to produce at those kinds of speeds then prices would drop a bunch.. or maybe nvidia thinks it can pull an intel kinda approach because once they see profit come it I doubt much of it will be for the GF3 and more for the cheaper cards.

I know the price is ridiculous, but this is the first card to come out in a long time that John Carmack raves about. I remember when the Geforce2 DDR came out and Carmack absolutely ripped at it, saying it was too little, too late, and that the graphics card industry really had to pick it up. He goes on and on about this new card saying that it finally offers developers the tools necessary to do the things they've always wanted, such as organic looking, cut-scene quality rendering for the entire game. He even says, he was a bit dissapointed that they just named it the GeForce3, since the Geforce2 was just and upclocked Geforce1, and this thing had a totally new core. He also said it was the biggest thing in the video card industry since the voodoo accelerator. That's pretty big praise from Mr. "I think the Geforce2 sux" Carmack. I'm not saying we should all buy one, $550 is more than a computer costs these days, but the GeForce3 is NOT just a speed bump, and it ALREADY HAS raised the bar on what programmers can do to push the medium. It apparently doesn't do framerates that well because the drivers haven't been optimized for DX8, or some junk like that, but it will add hardware acceleration for all kinds of juicy effects that I for one am very excited about. But yeah, I should shut up, since it isn't a hot deal...

This card is months ahead of it's time and really won't sell well for awhile because right now the games run faster/as fast/about as fast and with the same quality on a GF2 Ultra. A few months from now (6-12?) when games start coming out (the new Doom) that can support DX8 and some of the cool features of the GF3 then it will be worth buying.

$550? Ok, someone call Nvidia and tell them someone has gone insane in the marketing department. Who in their right mind would spend this much money to get 2 more frames out of a game? I'm sticking with my (now defunct) 3dfx Voodoo3, which was on $69 when I bought it ... now that is price effective!

look... all Hercules Prophet video cards are very expensive ( i think). i was just at best buys and saw the Hercules Prophet geforce 2 for 400 something and saw the ati radion dual head for 99$ with 32 megs of ddr....hmmm... guess what,.. i would have gone with the radion....

i don't do much computer gaming... but is there even any games that come close to maxing out a geforce 2 card? i thought quake 3 was the most intense game and it didn't even come close to using all the speed of the geforce 2... and also...
i don't even know if a geforce 3 would work to well... because wouldn't there be other bottlenecks that would need to be resolved?

like i said.. i don't know much about gaming on computers (all i do is age of empires 2 on my laptop and the newest graphics card i bought was a stb velocity 4400 ...ha... but that was for my linux server so i could have kick butt output on a tv for the command line... ha... which i now just ssh in... but anyways)...

oh yeah.. i think this video card is faster than my whole system

Not to endorse the price (the most I have ever paid for a video card is $150) but I do seem to remember not so long ago, people buying Voodoo 2 12mb cards at $250+ a pop which would place the SLI setup at around $500 (alright, it was a little while ago ). The only reason this looks bad is because we have gotten so used to cheap graphics cards. There will be people that will buy it for that....

Once again, this is not an endorsement, just a reminder....

Kudos ERJ, I was just about to add that....I remember when I bought my Canopus Pure 3D II for $250, and I thought THAT was cheap at the time haha,

So I guess if you're used to the days of $89 VooDoo3s, and $100 Radeons, then this seems insane...but for me, it just seems partially sane
I hope we get a visit from the Wal-Mart smily face as he rolls back prices on the rest of the GF line while whistling a happy tune hehe
