I know the price is ridiculous, but this is the first card to come out in a long time that John Carmack raves about. I remember when the Geforce2 DDR came out and Carmack absolutely ripped at it, saying it was too little, too late, and that the graphics card industry really had to pick it up. He goes on and on about this new card saying that it finally offers developers the tools necessary to do the things they've always wanted, such as organic looking, cut-scene quality rendering for the entire game. He even says, he was a bit dissapointed that they just named it the GeForce3, since the Geforce2 was just and upclocked Geforce1, and this thing had a totally new core. He also said it was the biggest thing in the video card industry since the voodoo accelerator. That's pretty big praise from Mr. "I think the Geforce2 sux" Carmack. I'm not saying we should all buy one, $550 is more than a computer costs these days, but the GeForce3 is NOT just a speed bump, and it ALREADY HAS raised the bar on what programmers can do to push the medium. It apparently doesn't do framerates that well because the drivers haven't been optimized for DX8, or some junk like that, but it will add hardware acceleration for all kinds of juicy effects that I for one am very excited about. But yeah, I should shut up, since it isn't a hot deal...
