My first 3d card was a Jazz multimedia voodoo rush card. Think I paid around $175 for it. At the time it was hot stuff. (Even if it was a so-so combo 2d/3d card) Back then 3D gaming cards really made the difference. Since then it's mainly been a rush to get the fastest fps from the video card makers. I've had the TNT, TNT-2, Geforce and not the Geforce 2 GTS (Thanks to the guy who told us all about the staples pricematch on the Elsa Gladiac) While they've made improvements on display quality all they mainly did was increase the FPS. Once the Geforce 3 takes off I think we'll start seeing some really quality 3D imagery. I think Nvidia knows that this card won't sell as well as previous ones, but they have chosen to finally push quality over quantity. Next year when we are drooling over just how real the next greatest 3D game is on our geforce4 (or whatever they'll call it) we'll see why the Geforce3 had to be.

Okay, I think you guys missed the point, it's called the Law of Supply and Demand. Great Demand, little supply! In addition its Nvidia maximizing its profits! They wouldn't price it that high, unless SOMEONE, is willing to buy it(this in addition to the insane costs of create a fabrication plant and the current price of DDR ram)! And there must be people buying it, because the price will stay that high for sometime! When they produce the GeForce3's in mass quantities and all the people who can afford it at high prices have purchased theirs, NVidia will then start lowering prices. It's kind of a give-and-take situation. But, this holds true for pretty much everything with capitalism. =)

(okay, know that was brief and missed a few issues, but I guess it'll do... and NO, I have no idea why I decided to blurt this out...)

Mine too... but as someone said before, its a give and take. Do you want to have a roof over your head? or do you want to be able to see "Realistic 3D graphics" of a roof over your virtual head? That's a tough one.

Hehehehehe

...or rich. It's like if you have to ask "how much", then you can't afford it.

Herbman,

Considering that I'm a full-time college student with 3 part-time jobs to make a living, my rent payment is quite hefty.

a few points to be made:

1) The Ge3 is being tested with early drivers. If there's one thing you can expect from nvidia, it's that drivers for them are VERY VERY important. Since the Ge3 doesn't rely on brute force (i.e. faster core and memory), it relies on architecture, drivers will play a MAJOR MAJOR difference

2) The V2-SLI combo was About $500 for both. HOwever, they could be purchased 1 at a time, and the V2 was SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much faster than anything around it. I mean, it's only competition was the Voodoo1 at the time. Speedwise, the difference is like comparing a GTS Pro to a TNT2. Big difference there.

3) For $500, it would need to provide speed WAY far ahead of it's time, which it doesn't (nor will it) do.

It had also better have razor-sharp 2d. nvidia is getting a reputation as providing poor 2d-quality cards.

Also keep in mind that everything new and cool about this card is actually a part of the spec on DirectX 8. So soon enough there will be plenty of cards out supporting the new features. Oh and someone mentioned that they thought Hercules went out of business...they did. Hercules was purchased by Guilemont (spelled wrong too lazy to find right spelling) So now all their cards get the Hercules name because no one here it the US had ever heard of them.

i was doing my taxes and noticed I got a geforce ddr when it came out for $300 shipped.

that site with the geforce 3 sells things for the retail price on every piece of computer product I have seen so its not the real world price. Tons of retailers will get that card under $500 which is better than the $600 we were all thinking before.

Im actually looking to buy one asap and not touching my rig for a year, but I just hope it will boost older games performance over my voodoo 5500.

also anybody else find playing games in higher resolutions just messes games up because of text, and the size of things?

for example I have tried some games at 1600x1200 on my 19" monitor and its messed up cause I can't read in game text? 1024x768 or a step above seems to be the limit for me.

LMAO, I love how everyone convieniently forgets that the Voodoo 2 SLI 12 x 2 setup was 600 bucks when it came out. Whatever. Oh I forgot, we're entitled to be able to afford every piece of computer equipment that comes out.

Yea...the Geforce 3 isn't worth the money right now...maybe in 9 months when the technology is actually implemented in the software. So, buy a Geforce 3 ultra ($310 shipped) or Geforce 64mb ($200 shipped). Go here Geforce Ulras for sale and buy my video cards at these low prices.

You might want to change that to a Geforce 2 Ultra so you don't have any confusion.
