Heh, too bad cendynes doesn't actually make anything. So the products that "SUCK" are not cendyne's but rather the people cendyne buys them from (in your opinion). I know they sell quality CD-RW drives (lite-on) and quality DVD-RW drives (pioneer) and decent DVD+RW drives (NEC) and quality DVD-ROM drives (lite-on). So what is it exactly that sucks?

I got my 52x cendyne cd-rw a few months ago or so, and it's a rebadged Asus, not a lite-on.

Add me to the victim's list....

I sent in a Staples $20 rebate on a Cendyne 48X12X48 CD-RW in May, saw this thread and it reminded me thet I never got the rebate.. I just checked Staples rebate site for the Status and it's not even listed.. they never even processsed it.. I called the number listed on the rebate reciept that printed when I bought it (1-877-580-3348) and all I got was a long message about Staples/Cendyne Rebates and the bounced checks. The message says that some rebate will no longer be paid, and that if a check bounced you should resubmit it. They also give contact information for the guy handling the receivership of Cendyne, and say to contact them with problems...

Next I am going to call 1-888-856-9210 (the staples rebate center number) and find out what the deal is.. baring that I will go back to the store, the manager told me when I bought it that they would honer it if there was a problem.. Yeah like he will remember me....

It doesn't show on staplesrebates but I found this on rebateshq.com

I called staples rebate center.... they don't know why it doesn't show but they since it's a Cendyne Promotion I have to contact Bob Evans at 818-768-8100..

That is crap... I am going back to the store....

I am just wondering-Do these rebate houses get their payment up front, so they will have the funds to honor rebates ? If so, they should be liable for the rebates they have approved and promised payment on. I have a 40 dollar rebate from Parago.com that has shown valid and in final stage of processing since before 7/21, and now, today, they are telling me to contact the receiver for info on filing a claim ! Sure seems like Parago would be liable to me. Any Class Action Lawyers here ? BTW, http://www.robbevans.com/html/caselist.html shows this company has been appointed to liquidate Cendyne.
CenDyne, Inc.
(Receiver) 03 CC
09399 14-Aug-03 Robert H. Gallivan Orange County Superior Court Appointed to liquidate the company for the benefit of creditors.

Well I have 3 $30 rebates listed as "valid". Of course, these will apparently never be paid by cendyne. I printed out the "valid" rebate status webpages and I'm taking them to officemax - hopefully they'll honor them. I did get lucky though, I cashed one $30 rebate right before the $hit hit the fan, and it cleared. So I got that goin' for me.

After seeing this I also check my status and this is what I have.

Tracking Results: Status Details

Rebate: $30.00 Rebate Check
Rebate Information For: ******
Promotion: Up to $30 Mail in Rebate on Select Cendyne Products (OfficeMax only)
Submission Type: MAIL
Date Received: 06-18-2003
Status: Processing Rebate
Status Detail: Your rebate is valid and is in the final stages of processing and should be sent to you within the next 30 days.

Looks like I am also out of luck, I think that the 30 days is way over.

These crooks were fruadulently rejecting rebates long before Chapter 11. Even that is a nice way to avoid paying what you owe and start over. If you are crooks there are endless ways to demonstrate it and Sindine has neglected very few.

Add Verbatim to the list.

Bought a Verbatim CDRW that just failed after a couple weeks use.
When calling Verbatim tech support for an RMA, voice mail says they no longer are doing
phone support, and I need to go to www.cendyne/support for service. After submitting
my info received the following reply on my Verbatim drive:

We apologize for the inconveniences that this message may cause you, but unfortunately
CenDyne is closing its doors and going out of business. This is why, there will not be any
more warranty services provided to customers.

I also tried skipping the Cendyne support page, and filled out RMA request at Verbatim's site.
The response was the same.

So it seems that other brands are using this Cendyne collapse as a way to get out of their own problems.
This Verbatim drive is actually a BenQ.

Rob I would not take this sitting down. Verbatim is the company who made the warranty to you-it is irrelevant who actually made the unit, so it would not matter even if Cendyne made your drive. You have a rock solid case against Verbatim. They are counting on you giving up was it is too small to pursue. I'd take them to small claims court, or at least file complaints with the FTC and your state's consumer protection department.

All Staples stores were sent a notice yesterday telling them to pull all Cendyne products from the shelves. The notice also stated that rebates are going to be delayed.

I'm sure by delayed they mean that they are not going to be paid. Staples is certaintly not going to cover the rebates for Cendyne, so I would say that anyone who has an outstanding rebates is going to be out of luck on collecting them.

Rebates are not a scam, cendyne is out of business, they will not honor any rebates.

"Free" rebates, for high-dollar electronics items, are fraudulent scams to begin with. No company can continue to do so, if everyone sent in their rebates, and survive. Sure, they count on some people simply not returning their rebates, but what if they do? The company will start arbitrarily changing the terms of the rebate after-the-fact (Illegal, Prime Peripherals/Okie Corp. was investigated for this by the FTC), or simply denying the rebates randomly, for BS reasons. We've all seen that happen I'm sure. Therefore, the original rebate offer was fraudelent on it's face, even though some of the early rebate submitters, or some small subset, may have recieved their rebates. It's almost like a pyramid scam, but not quite the same.

Just the otherday I received my 2nd email regarding my other $30 rebate for the 52/24/52 Cendyne that was on-sale at OM starting 7/27/03. So now RebatesHQ shows tracking #s for both of the $30 rebates and they both show as valid so I would imagine they will mail-out soon.

I'm just wondering what to do about cashing them when they arrive, do you guys think they will bounce also? Is there anything I can do about this?? Has anyone gone to their local OM and been like "WTF, these checks have been bouncing, take these and give me my cash here and you can eat the return fee when it happens?" I'm not sure what to do once they arrive, please advise.

I also got a postcard in the mail this week on one of their rebates, saying it was postmrked too late. I know that is BS. Perhaps it's better than getting a check and it bouncing, since my bank would charge a fee on top of me not getting the money.

Well, I guess I won't buy anything else from the bastards! Conveniently enough if they are out of business that won't be an issue.

when did cendyne go out of business???

does that mean we're not getting our rebates? or is officemax going to honor the rebates?

People,

The company was ordered into receivership. The company is no longer shipping product, not servicing warranties or honoring rebates. The receiver will go thru the company's books and decide to sell it or liquidate it. The rebate money is lost unless the new owner honors them which is unlikely.

I just got a $40 rebate check last week for a Cendyne CDRW I bought at Staples in May. Should I even try to cash it or just consider it a loss?

I guess I should stop hoping that check gets here cause it could bounce higher than apparently the Hulk can in a single bound!

i thought the way it works is that, rebate center collects paperwork, verifies, then requests money from company for valid rebates. after money received, checks sent out. but why are checks bouncing then?

and i think it's wrong to take attitude that to just see this as loss. we should all be figuring out how to get our money without being dinged for bounced check fees. since bankrupt, we should then all be trying to get staples/officemax to honor the rebates.

i know i'll be filing complaints about officemax and using small claims court if necessary (which seems successful to others in past).

if anyone has any feedback from rebate center or retailer, let us all know.

From the times I spoke with supervisors at rebate houses, that's the impression I got as to their method: every X many weeks, Rebate House goes to Manufacturer and says we processed and have xx many qualifiers for progam #abc; give us the money so we can cut the checks.

However, it has been suggested that in this case, Parago was given authorization to write checks drawn from a specific Cendyne account without the money actually being transferred to Parago. When Cendyne's assets were frozen, the uncashed checks bounced......

I had a cendyne $50 rebate for my dvd-r burner from Office Max that I had sent in certified mail, made copies of everything, sent in the NEXT DAY I bought the burner etc etc and all I got was mis information and runaround from cendyne, I got all their correspondence thru emails, resubmitted it 2 other times, then they said it was incomplete, then it was postmarked after the date (DUHHH it was the 3rd submission of my original paperwork).

So at this point after 3 legit times of submitting it and getting the runaround, I printed out all the nonsense and run around emails, went into officemax with the drive in my hand and all my paperwork,(calmly yet firmly saying I was not leaving till I got my rebate or they refunded my credit card) & talked to the store manager about it and said what would you do if this were you, showing him their responses, my certified mail label, photocopies of everything and all and he walked in the back, came out 5 mins later gave me a $60 store gift card and said he was sorry for the trouble I had.

Yeah it was a bit of a pain collecting on this but just showing my information to the store manager and being somewhat polite yet also firm about I want my rebate and have gone above and beyond all rules to get it, and in the end Office Max made the decision and helped me out.

YMMV but I would say stop fooling with this and take it up with any and all documentation you have to the store manager and dont leave till they FIX it .

Guys, if you do not get your rebates, go to the place you bought it from and show them all your paperwork and demand to return the item or be receive the rebate from the vendor. As far as we are concerned, they are the ones who advertised these drives at a low price after rebate and they are responsible for what items they sell.
