Not Hot! Excite@Home told to end service.

I know this isn't a hot deal, but it is hot news.

A U.S. bankruptcy judge ordered Excite@Home to shut down its high-speed Internet service at midnight on Friday, a move that could affect about four million subscribers. The ISP could still strike a deal with cable companies to keep service flowing.

It's great you are interested and trying to help out, but there are a couple threads about this in Off-Topic. If you cruise over there, there are plenty of people discussing it.

I am confused still...thought the Excite folks were simply 'content' providers...like all the bells and whistles of AOL...don't the cable companies already have the hardward and broadband infrastructure in place...just need content? I just need my TCP/IP pipe...nothing more, nothing less

They provide the network infrastructure, their network connects companies like comcast and cox to their network which links them to the internet, the cable companies own all the local stuff such as your cable gateway

ps...the ruling really says there's nothing the Feds can do to stop them from shutting down...doesnt mean they will, they are still working on a last minute deal...

Otherwise it's dial up access to the Company network for a while or just go into the office (damn I'll miss that VPN from Home)...

Here was my complaint:

Dear AT&T,

If you cut off my internet access as a result of @Home shutting down,
I will eliminate every AT&T service from my household FOREVER.

I will transfer my local and long distance to someone else.
I will get Satellite service and dump AT&T Cable.
I will never consider using AT&T for internet access.
I will boycott everything that has the AT&T name.
including the 2 home phones I plan on buying as Xmas presents.


A few months ago you transferred me from Mediaone to a sinking ship.
Then you changed the contracts to @home such that AT&T gets %80
of the take while @home, the company actually doing the work, gets %20.
You've helped drive @home to extinction while offering a buyout price
worth 1/10th of the actual value of @home.

Let me take this final moment of internet connection time
to say SCREW YOU.
