Since a lot of you might have the cyberwings accounts thru all their hot deals thread that were posted here, you might want to know these information.

I apologize first if this post is not allowed here... please lock it.

--- Taken from their website ---

Posted July 3, 2002 1:00 am EDT

Within the next 3 days, Cyberwings will be moving its servers to a new facility in Northern Virginia . This is a PHYSICAL move of all equipment and the estimated downtime is 2-3 days. Our reasoning for this is an improved network infrastructure in a better equipped, better staffed, more secure facility.

During this move, all sites & mail servers (including cyberwings.com) will be unavailable. The Cyberwings helpdesk will also be unavailable. We will do everything in our power to make this move as quick and painless as possible. Account setups and upgrades will also be delayed due to this move.

Edit: <Sun, Jul 21, 2002 12:00AM>
Still no sign of life :|

Edit: <Sat, Jul 27, 2002 19:00PM>
Still not fully running, but they said they are rebuilding. Go to Cyberwings to create your ticket.
Who knows how long this will take

Edit: <Wed, Jul 31, 2002 11:30PM>
No more significant updates from Cyberwings... some said the rebuild is up to around ticket# 50 or 60. :Q

They just moved into a new, secure facility. Pictures were on the web site. Good Luck, all, considering there was no notice. I wonder what leaving the state does for this guy as far as responsibilty?

One thing you might want to do to ease the pain is to set up an eternal nameserver at ZoneEdit.com (free for up to 5 domains); that way, even if you site is down (as it will be, sadly) and the mailserver won't work, the mail won't bounce, at least not right away.

If you've registered your domains with namecheap.com, you have the same sort of DNA service available, with helpful tutorials.

I've cut and paste some Cyberwings instructions on how to do tihs with NameCheap.com, simply because the relevant cyberwings website will itself be down soon, likely.

I have not done this myself, I should warn, since I have nothing critical with CW just yet--this makes sense and looks right. I think it IS right. But I can't say from experience that it's 100% correct.

Set Up External DNS at Namecheap
by Cyberwinger Dave114

(This is different from from changing nameservers and involves somewhat more work)

The reason for using DNS services other that those provided by Cyberwings serves a couple of purposes: it can prevent mail from bouncing, it can allow you somewhat more control over your account, and also allow you to change quickly to another web host.

Basically, it the web server that your site is hosted on crashes, or for some other reason is inaccessible, then your dns is inaccessible as well. Well this may not sound like such a bad thing, as people will not be able to access your website anyways, it may cause mail sent to you during this time to bounce. Whenever a person attempts to send you an email, contact is first established with the dns, asking them if there is a mail server connected with this domain. If during this attempt, either the dns cannot be contacted, or the dns replies saying that this domain is not configured for email, then the message will bounce. On the other hand, if contact can be established with the dns, but not with the mail servers, then the message will be held for a few days before it bounces, while repeated attempts are made to contact the mail server at the address the dns specifies.

One more benefit of this is that it allows you to use some of the other stuff offered at Namecheap, like URL forwarding. In that way you can setup mypage.yourdomain.com to forward to yourdomain.com/mypage/.

Also, if (although hopefully this'll never happen) Cyberwings happens to shut down, by modifying your dns settings, you can have visitors to your site sent to the new host in only an hour or so, rather than the 24 or more hours that it can take for changes to your nameservers to move throughout all the servers on the internet.

Go to Namecheap.com and login to your account.

Click the 'Modify Domains' button. (See image 1)

Go down to the domain name that you wish to have setup at Cyberwings and click the edit button on that row. (See image 2)

Click on 'Modify Nameservers'. (See image 3)

If you see that 'Use your own nameservers' is selected rather than 'Use NameCheap's Nameservers', select 'Use NameCheap's Nameservers' and then click the button labeled 'Save Changes.' (See image 4)

Click 'Modify Hosts/URL forwarding.' (See image 5)

Erase any entries you see that are already in the table that appears

(In the following instructions, replace IPNUMBER with the FTP IP address listed in the welcome email that you received from Cyberwings, and YOURDOMAIN.COM with your domain name. See image 6 for the completed table. )
In the first row of the table, enter '@' (without the quotes) in the HostName field, IPNUMBER in the Address field and in the record type field select an A (Address) record (don't worry about that last column)

In the second row of the table, enter '@' (without the quotes) in the HostName field, mail.YOURDOMAIN.COM in the Address field and in the record type field select an MX (Mail) record (don't worry about that last column)

In the third row of the table, enter 'webmail' (without the quotes) in the HostName field, IPNUMBER in the Address field and in the record type field select an A (Address) record (don't worry about that last column)

In the fourth row of the table, enter 'mail' (without the quotes) in the HostName field, YOURDOMAIN.COM in the Address field and in the record type field select a CNAME (alias) record (don't worry about that last column)

In the fifth row of the table, enter 'www' (without the quotes) in the HostName field, IPNUMBER in the Address field and in the record type field select an A (Address) record (don't worry about that last column)

In the sixth row of the table, enter 'ftp' (without the quotes) in the HostName field, YOURDOMAIN.COM in the Address field and in the record type field select a CNAME (alias) record (don't worry about that last column)

Leave the remaining rows blank.

Click 'Save Changes'

After you have clicked 'Save Changes' the same table will be displayed again. Now you can log out of your account.

Perhaps this discussion could be moved to one of the existing 620 threads about cyberwings?

(Also, my guess is the people who need to know this -- cyberwings customers -- have already been told, and probably don't need to be told about it here. If they haven't already been told, perhaps they should think about whether or not they should be cyberwings customers.)

Ummm, make that "external nameserver", not "eternal".

Not easy to find much to laugh about with CW now, for its customers, anyway. But hard as it is to believe, if this move works, and there's good reason to think it will (only time will tell), the current fiasco will become just a nightmarish memory.

MontyBurns, incredibly, it's not clear CW is informing EVERY customer of theirs--I've received no e-mail from them, and I'm opted-in to their mailing list.

Also, their "move faq" states (or did this mornig) that they weren't going to send notification e-mails to those NOT opted-in, because that would violate their no-spam policy.... Absurd--even unconscionable. ("Why didn't you tell me my site would be down for three days when you knew it in advance?!" "Well, you said you didn't want Spam!")

Fortunately, that's probably going to change--numerous staff have said as much.

jeez, I heard nothing about it... I use zoneedit, and have signed up for backup mail service, so I'm all set, but it would've been nice to know.

I have seen this so many times before... it sounds to me like someone is getting themselves a 2-3 day headstart.

I hope I am wrong about this- only time will tell...

What's that sound? It is the sound of a business model collapsing-

Quit posting crap in the forums. I'm sure someone's going to say "well don't read it if it doesn't interest you" but this is definitely not a hot deal and the poster said as much. It goes somewhere else. And for those of you who say "don't read it if it doesn't interest you" gimme your email. I wanna get it on the spammer's lists. You shouldn't mind. Just "don't read it if it doesn't interest you."

Cool, thanks for the heads-up. I was just thinking to myself this morning "Self, what you really need is a Hot Deal on an webspace provider that is relocationg and not telling their clientelle that they're going to be dead in the water sometime in the next three days for about three days". This couldn't have come at a better time.

Now, if I could just find a deal on penile enlargement...

Looks like Cyberwings bought one of the secure bunkers made vacant by the NoVa dot-bomb.

You should know that CEO Shawn (that is is real name, incidentally, his parents,
Richard and Natalie Shawn named him CEO) is going to be offering free
downtime Zaps tonight on his Webchat in honor of the first anniversary of
Cyberwings first move. Anyone can immediately ZAP their account to
receive 5x the downtime (that's 10-15 days) for free. If you have ZAPd
your account in the past, you will be allowed one additional ZAP, bringing
you to 50-75 days downtime. This will be a onetime offer, tonight only,
unless another excuse for a special comes along. But CEO told us that
the chances of another special are basically slim and big, so don't hold
your breath.
