Well my saga with them is officially over- paypal forcibly reversed my last payment to them this afternoon, $50 back to me. Weee...

I advise anyone with a clue to do their best at getting a refund, this whole experience has just been rotten.

I worked for a dot-com(dot-bomb) and we had a 12x16 cage at Exodus in the Toyama facility in Sunnyvale.

When we got behind (right before the bankruptcy) our access to the cage was SERIOUSLY curtailed. We were allowed in to work, but we were NOT allowed to check out any equipment (aka we weren't allowed to leave with anything).

Once the bankruptcy got going, the court ordered Exodus to release the equipment so it could be liquidated.

It got so bad they escorted us to our cage to make sure we didn't leave with anything.

Totally off topic but someone said LS couldn't hold CW's equipment, well I know Exodus sure did hang on to ours when we didn't pay.

I couldn't make this up if I tried

Due to the overwhelming number of requests I have received for prelaunch colocation, dedicated & account deals, this email is for those who have requested that. For those who did not request that, please ignore this email unless you are interested.

If you find anything in this email that you are interested in, please email prelaunch@cwstatus.com for information on how to confirm your reservation for these services in our new DC. Again, for those who are not interested, just stop reading now and move on. There is no reason why we cannot offer a variety of PreLaunch offers for those who are requesting them, and make them available to everyone, even while we are transitioning. Gawk at this if you wish, but we are offering these to people who want them before our launch in our Virginia DC. If you're not interested, move on and don't bother reading this email. For those of you who are interested, enjoy the PreLaunch deals!

What if I am just interested in not being interested or finding something interesting until I lose interest, oh nevermind...

I sure wish I backed up my forums before this happened.
I hope it goes back up at least so I can rescue what's left of my forums.
A lot of my users are complaining.

Excellent example but wrong conclusion. The concern in your example was that dixiesys would 'steal' their own assets which were soon to be tied up in backruptcy. Dixiesys probably had everything leveraged and owed money on these assets. I am assuming that the older dated equipment of CW is not leased and entirely owned by the CEO and not being held for that reason. (I spoke to someone at Lightship, now they wouldnt say anything specific regarding the account, but that LS is not holding the assets of CW. Now on the off-chance that someone has a lien on CW's assets that is a possibility.....which in that case CEO Shawn is a bigger fraud than I ever thought) I will just assume that he is a noob who doesnt know what he was doing with no genuine intention on defrauding anyone.

For those people that are stuck with forums and info that is at the moment unretrievable, I recognize your disgust. This service isnt worth free.

Ok, first off, the person "claiming" to be a LS employee is a fake. If it is an employee, then it is a breach of confidentiality, for which they can be sued over. Second, I've been in contact with Shawn for 6 months now (way before all this hype started) and can honesty tell you that he knows what he is doing. Here are some things I have learned about the new DC:

The new DC's connection is 10 times faster than the one in Maine (600MB an hour to 6,000MB an hour)

Everything from the DC in Maine will be in the new DC plus some extra servers

They are giving all Individual accounts 3 free months onto there term and Lifetime accounts will get some extra space/bandwidth

The 100Mbit lines and Dual T3 backup lines will be for just cyberwings, not shared

Shawn has been at the new DC since Thursday and will be there until everything is back up

Any way you look at it, its not that bad. We are getting faster connections and a bonus added onto our accounts for just a week of downtime. You guys need to stop freaking out about every little thing and remember that stuff like this happens all the time to other hosting companies, not just CW...

Well AMDguy202, You're very gullibe, but you have A HUGE SET of cajones!

How am I gullible?? For believing someone who has NEVER tried to scam anyone before?? I think some of you need to rethink your stance on this. Shawn has never scammed anyone, you can get a refund at anytime if you would like. You are talking about this as if you have proof, yet you don't. Rumors start on these forums and snowball until everyone gets paranoid and thinks they are being screwed, give me a break. As I mentioned before, stuff like this happens all the time. Servers go down, connection issues pop up, etc. Every hosting service has its problems from time to time, with CW, it was bound to happen. Just because you guys think his prices are too low, doesn't mean he is bailing.

Shawn would do A LOT better if he managed customer expectations. It's Saturday, and the crustly old cyberwings status page still says he "intends" service to be restored Saturday... or by the end of the weekend. The nameservers aren't pinging at of 2:15PST, so I can only guess it'll be sometime Monday, if ever.

He should say Monday, then suprise everyone with a weekend re-activation... instead he leads us all on, like a mule to its carrot.

It's no big deal, but I'm getting tired to trying back and searching for updates only to find the service still isn't up like he said it was going to be. Remember, is was a week and two days ago when he told everyone service would be restored "this Friday or Monday" -- now over a week later he's saying "This Weekend Or Monday." :|

It's sad to say, but I almost agree with the CW fanboi's. Anyone who got a hosting package with CW, should have realized he was a reseller. Like anyone can, he just got a server with RackShack and starting advertising. I know he wasn't a company when he started doing that, because he got a $200 server 13 months ago and just starting filling it up with customers. The point is, anyone can be a reseller, you should have just gone to the source. If someone is a reseller for Rackshack, just go to Rackshack instead. These webhosting companies give you control panels so you can manage your servers, and pretend to be a fairly skilled hosting "company". But the people you're signing up with, (for most resellers) aren't a company, are just some guy with 100-200 bucks, and could be gone tomorrow and you couldn't do a thing. From what I saw on the website, he even SAID they were resellers for RackShack. I mean who would sign-up with CW realizing that? Seeing as ANYONE can be a reseller. It took me 2 seconds to see that this guy was a one man show who got a ton of sign-ups from advertising on hot deal sites. I wonder why he really pushed Paypal payments. Geee... Paypal doesn't even ask for a SSN, they have check cards so the money never goes into any bank, so gee a great way to get some tax free $$$. Shawn was just trying to make a buck. Good for him. Only a fool would sign-up knowingly with a reseller and someone who pushed Paypal payments, and who claimed to have data centers just waiting to be moved into. Oh, and gives lifetime accounts for a buck fifty. *lol* The people who got ripped off from CW are the same guys who bought those $300 Sony laptops from a geocities site. Anyway, forget resellers. Go to hosting companies that own their own lines, datacenters and actually have employees.

He updated the cwstatus TODAY, the 13th. Anyways, yes, he has a few servers with rackshack, not a lot though. He has over 13,000 customers, I would say he's more than a "reseller"...

I just find it so amusing that people here are lovingly telling CW customers that they were "scammed". Let me look at the situation...

I'm out $3.95 for, what, two months of hosting service thus far? That, up until right now, has been great? I couldn't have gotten hosting that cheap, monthly, anywhere else.

If CW goes bye-bye, am I fretting? HA. I got my money's worth - I'd have been paying more elsewhere anyway.

Do they have anything of mine that's important? Not really - I have a local copy of my site on my system. And I paid them via PayPal, so it's not even like CEO Shawn has my credit card # for any devious future schemes.

All in all I risked next to nothing, and have already gotten a service in return. So, to all who are laughing at me saying "You got suckered!", I say, "Have you really nothing better to do?". The risk assessment wasn't that dramatic. I yawn in the general direction of all these naysayers - because, if your conspiracy theories are true, who cares? I don't.

And that is that.

I have 4 sites at CW. Total of 660 meg available and am out about $16 if they go under. For this price I have had about 4 months of excellent server and about a week of no service. So that is about a buck a month for each site if they never come up again. These sites are youth sports related and the loss of them will not seriously affect anyone. I have fairly recent backups but will lose a little work if things go bad though nothing really serious. These non-critical sites are the only ones that should even consider the bargain basement hosting from CW. Am I really upset. Nope. I used to host these website using my free ISP webspace. They were static sites. No visitor interaction was available. Since I got access to the MySQL databases at CW I have added forums, classified ads, interactive calendar and more to the sites. I have had more than $16 worth of fun updating the sites. As a backup I had kept the old websites at my ISP and a couple of ETeamz websites. As soon as the CW sites went down completely I went to my backup plan. I signed up for free domain forwarding at www.webedit.com to forward my domain names back to the old sites. Changing the name servers from CW to webedit required about 16 hours to propagate. Now I have the old sites up with explanations for my visitors that the other features should be back soon. My email which went down because of the CW outage was also redirected to my ISP account using webedit. Overall it was relatively painless, but admittedly annoying. I will now wait to see what happens and will return to CW when it is stable. I will be better prepared for future problems with the "plan B" I have developed. I will definitely keep my backups current. I learned a lesson but still don't want to pay the premium price for a different provider. The moral to the story is don't put anything super important at CW, keep backups, have a "plan B", and sit back and enjoy the soap opera that CW has begun.

Spidey is right on the money. I have (had?) two site for $3.95 each. Big harry deal. If they don't come back up I won't be crying. If I need them, I'll pay a bit more and move them to DixieSys. But these sites were just play things and didn't trully rate even the low cost of Dixie.

I don't think anyone is suggesting this is somehow a scam.

I think lots of people are just suggesting this is a pretty poorly run company. Often hilariously so.

Gee, I didn't know everyone signed up for just a few months of something to play around with. I'da thought some people were actually going to try to get some use out of it. Since that is the case let me announce my new service. Lifetime memberships $5.00. Servers located at my bellsouth service center.Dc3's up the yin yang. Send money via Paypal only.

You know, these folks who come in and defend the amount of the loss just don't get it. You guys will probably get some service in the fufture. I don't think thay've bailed. But, why wait. Send Paypal now and get set up today!

I don't think anyone is suggesting this is somehow a scam.

Well, quite a few people out here considered this a scam and my comments were directed toward them. Just several that I randomly picked out in a few minutes:

"I am beginning to think this is indeed a long, drawn-out scam."
"There were warnings all over the place and the prices themselves should've told you that this was a scam."
"It seems as if Cyberwings is the ENRON of the web hosting industry."
"The people who got ripped off from CW are the same guys who bought those $300 Sony laptops from a geocities site."
"Does anyone know if our pages will ever go up again, or just forget about this whole scam?"
"I am on the verge of just contacting my credit card company for fraud."
"Anyway guys, WAKE THE FUK UP! Cyberwings is gone. bye bye. done. finito. Anyone who thinks their site is magically coming back is a freakin moron."

Maybe I missed some and they were actually intended to be sarcastic - apologies ahead of time if I didn't grab them in the proper context. But regardless, there are enough people out there who think anyone with a CW account is gullible and got suckered - and, again, to that I must simply yawn and refer to the principles of risk assessment. I'm not waiting on a service that I've not yet received - I've already gotten part of it, more than enough to justify the cost, at that.

I mean, if someone were daft enough to try and host an e-commerce site with CW, OK, I'll join everyone in calling *them* suckers.

Wow, things are looking up...Just got this email from CEO in my mailbox...Check it out...

Kwad,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Plans are going ahead full speed on the
combined hosting service/arcade/cybercafe/crackrack that I told you about in the last
email. Several more cracking groups have come on board since my last email, and have
promised to work against and DOS (denial of service) attacks if we up their use of
the server machines during non-peak periods. So right now, I think we'll let them use
15-20% of the servers. In return, we should be home free in terms of DOS. NO OTHER
HOSTING SERVICE can make this claim, and it will contribute to your pledge of 98%
uptime, all the time.

Although we don't expect to be up for a few more days still (my IS guys have been taking
a long time to figure out how to connect our inkjet printer directly to each and every
server so that we can print when necessary; in fact, one of them is on the phone with
Roger from Fry's right now working this out), we still look to be on track to have something
to roll out very shortly. Oh, and last night we hooked up speakers simultaneously to every
server and played a bunch of burned copies of the Hoobastank album. That was AWESOME!
We are thinking of using the servers to offer up music in the arcade, although we are currently
trying to work out a mechanism for certifying that a customer is computer literate enough to be
allowed to go into the hosting section and put his CD in the player.

Anyway, to celerbrate the fact that we are getting close to finishing the move, we are having our
first "Let's celebrate the fact that we are getting close to finishing the move" sale. For this
very limited, once a year sale, we are offering the following:

1) Dedicated hosting on a 486 computer
with 32mb, 4.3gb of disc space, 2 case fans, Soundblaster Live! card, USB ethernet, guaranteed
<20% usage by our hacking partners, guaranteed 2x speed or higher CDrom, and priority
usage of the huge 400kbps upload bandwidth we are getting from ATT broadband. We have only
a limited number of these dedicated servers available, at a cost of $139.95 per month, or $140.00 for
a lifetime contract. We request that only those people who have a real need for this kind of speed
and state of the art performance apply, as our supplies are limited.

2) If you already have an account with us, you are eligable for our BUZZ sale. For $19 a month you
can BUZZ your account. By BUZZing your account, we guarantee we will never increase the rate
on your account in the future unless absolutely required. You can BUZZ your account up to three times,
which increases the guarantee strength. A 3x BUZZed account is also called our KING BUZZ account, and
in addition to all the other features you know about, will provide you with 50 free tokens to be used
in our partner arcade. Note that the tokens cannot be used with the Street Fighter III game, as that
is too new. But you are welcome to use them with any other game in the arcade.

3) If you don't want to BUZZ your account, you can still purchase a RAD PACK for $16. This consists of 50 tokens
for our partner arcade, a keychain, a pair of new cotton socks, and a coupon for $1 off any jar
of Claussen pickles. A RAD PACK deluxe is also available for $27, which includes all the above AND
an ISA sound card.

Note that these specials are available for a limited time only. When we get our new site up and running,
prices WILL be higher. So if you want them, act now.

And for those of you who are tired of waiting (despite all our efforts to bring you the best in a
reasonable amount of time), we have a new refund offer: Email me at the standard email address
and request a refund. Refund requests are currently being processed in no more than 180 days. If you
want your refund processed more quickly, we have set up a plan for expediting refunds. I recommend
this. Here is how it works: You email me with your request for a refund, along with the refund amount
you would like. If you want your request expedited, you should have already PayPal'd me an amount
equal to the refund amount you are requesting. Be sure to indicate the PayPal ID number for this payment
in your refund request letter. When I get your letter, you will be placed in the expedited pile for much
faster processing. When your refund request is processed, I will send you back your original refund plus
the expedition amount you sent. I need this expedition money as a sign of good faith from you, to indicate
who REALLY wants a refund, and who is just applying for a refund to waste my time.

OK, that's it. If you want to get in on the sale, please hurry, as this offer won't last long.

And to the 1.2 million fans of our service, thanks for keeping the faith. When, later this year, we move
into the 500,000 square foot facility in Akron, OH, you will be justly rewarded.

If any of you have a fairly static IP and can leave your computer on for a while, you can host your own website until we find out either way with CW. There is a free service to point your domain name to your IP at DomainCow I think they are owned by Tucows. You just sign up with them and change your nameservers with your registrar. I switched my 2 sites over already.

That's just too funny Kwad.
I'm glad mine is in Texas--no downtime yet.

I was thinking of doing the King Buzz, does it sound like a good deal? I mean you do the tokens, though I don't know where Sioux City, IO is.

I think I know where that "Arcade" in Sioux City is at!!!! I think it's the Arcade on 4th street near the Pink Pussy Cat Bar and the Too Hot to Trott Night Club. If you guys know where Sioux City, IO is, then you should be able to see the Arcade near these two bars. You can't miss it....there is a big "XXX" red, neon light and it sells comic books and is very much so an Adult Bookstore, so you won't have to worry about punk kids in the Arcade when you want to use your tokens.
