This bit of "good news" for Cyberwings is temporary. I'm not suprised they're back up -- now it's time to see how long they'll stay up. And the next time they go down, what stance will CEO-Shawn take with his customers?

Remember, they're really up yet. They've got customers to load into Plesk. Let's see how they do recreating their customer accounts by hand. I think the customer re-loading is another nightmare waiting to happen.

Another question to ponder: Will Cyberwings be able to rebuild their customer accounts in Plesk before another service interrupton?

BTW, has anyone else noticed how many router troubles this guy's got? Shawn's used the old "the router did it" story about four times already.

Apparently the cyberwings IRC channel is back up on the normal server. They moved BACK. I dunno what shawn told them to convince them to let him back, but I'm guessing the deal was that NO one of the IRCops would be helping out anymore with anything in #cyberwings, since none of them are now ops, and they all left the channel. Not sure this is a really good decision, I mean the spanm/flood attacks before the IRCops got involved were pretty nasty. I dunno, anyway, since shawn is apparently still alive, I'm still hoping. We will see.

Interesting, he said this earlier, dunno why:
[22:53] * CEO-Shawn will NOT be restoring OPERATOR ACCESS to ANY CW Interns or Volunteers. ONLY Myself and 2 other people will have OPERATOR access within this room.

Maybe it has something to do with the "violations" that got cyberwings kicked out.

Unfortunately I got disconnected for an hour or two when I was AFK, when I came back shawn was gone, so dunno what happened.

Well, I'm just glad that at least they're up. As for how long...well, it depends on the rest of the customers. If they are as forgiving as I am then I think they'll survive but if AT is any indication then they probably won't last.

It's kind of funny how everyone reacts....the "naysayers" attack on any little "positive" that happens and seem to "rejoice" at the negatives and the opposite for the "loyalists".

Anyways, it's like Wolfgang and Brasscat said...."only time will tell".....

I cannot believe this happened! I've got my e-mails going through my domain which I bought from cyberwings and I bought into one of their hosting packages a few months ago. I would love to get some information, as I didnt get any warning of this and havent received an e-mail from them to date. Is everything now lost? How do I transfer my domain if I can't even sign up to their site? And could anyone give me the link to the chatrooms for cyberwings?

thanks

So is all of my data from my site totally lost? That really blows, as I had no idea it was going down until it went, and I hadn't backed anything up yet (as I had just gotten stuff uploaded).

vetteguy, questions like that might be better directed to their support chatroom:

irc.webchat.org
port 6667
#cyberwings

Check out Shawn's latest statements (compiled from a chat session at 2am this morning) here.

From what I gather, they haven't resolved the issue with LightShip not allowing them access to their servers, but I got the impression that they will gain access to them in the near future, either to backup all the data, or to retrieve the servers physically. Either way, when that happens you'll get your site back.

Hope that helps

P.S. It'll be interesting to see how their new DC holds up under the strain of all the anandtechers downloading their test file

Yup, cyberwings.com is down again...

hell, it only came up for the first time in ages about 12 hrs ago - I'd say they're still having teething problems. Hopefully it'll be worked out today and they can make with the account setups.

Yes, there's no reason to suspect this is anything ohter than a temporary problem.

Well, no reason other than the sites have been down for weeks and the company repeatedly says things that never come true.

But other than that: Things are looking tip top!

Monty, in all honesty...

People are posting useful information here, and asking reasonable questions. If you're just going to repeat the same thing you put into every other post, could you at least think twice before replying? No personal offense is meant (hard as it might be to believe), but you might as well copy & paste your old replies when you post. <insert sarcastic comment about CW's reliability and/or ability to keep its customers informed here> We get the message.

Ha, now watch me get branded a "CW devotee".

OK, here is some more "factual" information from the CEO himself. This is all posted on the status page and was taken from their IRC channel on 7/22. Everything from him is in quotes (be warned - he likes to refer to himself in the 3rd person a lot), my comments are designated by *

"2 Servers are Live right now. 16 more servers are installed, ready to go. As soon as we get them cabled, configured & ready, they will be online (very shortly.)"
"New DC in Virginia is online, 100% Functional, 2 servers online immediately, 16 more to follow as soon as we get cabling in place to hook them into the Switch. Already configured, ready to roll."

*OK, so now there are only 18 servers, not the 30 he said he was going to have. And in the first quote he says 16 of those still need to be configured but seconds later, in the second quote, he says they are already configured and just need to be plugged into a switch. Which should take exactly how long?*

"If you ASKED for a refund, you are gettig one. NO going back on that. ALL refunds asked for WILL be granted and you can reorder in the future if you wish"

*Well so much for his pronouncement that those asking for refunds would not be welcome back at Cyberwings again. I guess that's a load off their minds.*

"Cyberwings.com will be FULLY updated with accurate, updated information with 24 hours and the QUestionnaire will be available within that time as well."

*Ahhh, here's what everyone wanted to see. The newest we-will-be-up-&-running-by-date. So those of you who like to follow these things, he said early morning of July 22 that Cyberwings.com would be up with something more substantial than a default Plesk page by the end of the day. And the elusive user questionnaire, the one everyone has to fill out to get their accounts "rebuilt", the one that was originally promised within 24 to 48 hours on July 15, should also be up on that site by the end of today.*

From the Q&A session:
"[Mike7] Assuming that everything you've said is true and accurate -- when will all service, websites, etc., be fully up and running? Are we talking a 3 day period of re-building? 2 weeks? A month and a half?

[CEO-Shawn] MIKE7: I dare not give any timeframes at this point - but I can say that ALL Staff will be in REBUILDING MODE starting tomorrow when our questionnaire & updated information goes online."

*OK, he originally said that rebuilding the accounts would take till the end of July and maybe later than that. It seems he's backing off that statement and going with a more nebulous when-they're-done-they're-done deadline. He also responded to a later question by saying "7-8 staff and 4 volunteers will be helping us rebuild 24/7".*

"[CEO-Shawn] has been LIVING inside our DC (yes, it's that nice!) since Thursday night (Ok, I did leave twice....) working NON STOP on our servers with another person who is assisting me there."

*Now he's saying that his staff, which was working nonstop, is now only him and an assistant, which sounds to me anyway an awful lot like an employee of the datacenter. In previous postings I believe that him or his staff have put them number of people working on the servers in the DC much higher.*

Responding to numerous questions about the pecking order in "rebuilding" accounts:
"We will be splitting our team into 5 people working on Resellers, 3 on AYW/Individual to start with. WHEN RESELLERS ARE DONE, all 8 people will work on AYW & Individuals that are left. Priority WILL be given to Resellers initially. "

*OK, now his staff of 7-8 plus 4 volunteers who he said ertlier were going to work on the rebuild 24/7 is now down to 8 people total. It must be that new math."

Whenever I think of this whole situation, I keep picturing a deviantly bright 14 year old sitting in front of 5 computers, acting like different users on each one, and trying his best to keep from laughing hysterically while claiming to be "CEO-Shawn".

I think soon we're all going to find out that there is no CEO-Shawn. There never was.

He is just buying time. He has not sold his houses and all the corvettes yet. He also needs to incorporate CW so nobody can go after his personal assets. The LS incident just caught him off-guard. This is the second phase of his plan.

I like how, in CEO's words, "the new DC is up and functional 100%" -- then the rest of the e-mail talks about how he's got more PC's to configure, 'cause only two are running. Plus, no talk about reloading customer accounts into Plesk.

Of course, everything's down again and Cyberwings support isn't sure what's going on. I know - it's a router problem!

BTW, I'm adding up an estimate of Cyberwings customer losses. Please send me 1) the amount you've lost (assuming CW is indeed dead), and 2) if you've requested/received a refund.

Send that info to cyberloss@brasscat.org

mccall, you make some good points there, such as the inconsistencies between the number of servers Shawn has said there'll be on separate occasions. But it's apparent to me that you weren't actually present in the chat room during the Q&A cause you've misinterpreted a few things.

Firstly, When Shawn said that he and another tech were setting things up in the DC, he was referring to setting up and configuring the servers *physically*. The 7-8 (or however many) staff are for the rebuilding of *user accounts*, which is a lot bigger job than setting up the servers. So even if he's changed his mind as to how many staff he's putting into the rebuilding process (and who knows, his maths may be off), he's definately putting most of the staff, if not all, into 'rebuilding' user accounts.

That thing about him referring to himself in 3rd person - that's just him using the /me command in IRC, people do it all the time, especially in the cyberwings chat room it seems, it's hardly unusual to frequent #cyberwings chatters. Probably merely to make the text stand out from the rest of the chaos in the room.

Oh, some people were complaining about shawn shouting at them. No, he doesn't capitalise every fifth or so word because he has an irrational tendency to shout certain words at random when he's speaking. It's just a way of emphasising the word - mostly you'd use italics for it, but he seems to like caps. I would've thought that was obvious but apparently not to some.

I'm not gonna comment on the fact that cyberwings.com is down again - it's nothing new, and the trace on it still resolves all the way to the Cogent DC so i'm not particularly worried about it.
