*NOT HOT* Megatoners credit card theft... security issues

I bought about $20 worth of ink from megatoners yesterday afternoon and my parents just got a call from Chase Security saying someone tried to charge $850 dollars to our card and was denied. I just ran virus/spyware scanners and checked for any trojans or anything that would've caused it to happen on my part. I talked with the Chase security officer on the phone and they said something along the lines of Megatoners having weak security against online theft. Our card is rarely used online and this was the first online transaction in about 3 months on that card.

I really hope there was some fluke accident because I know numerous AT members as well as myself have purchased through them before with no problems. If this doesn't belong here please move, but I just wanted to give a quick warning to anyone considering buying ink anytime soon.

moral of this story:
1) there's no way to prove or disprove that megatoners did anything
2) even if they did consumers aren't liable for credit card fraud
3) this isn't a hot deal

reminds me of the infamous buy.com credit card theft, i think ppl have a right to know if a biz has/had shady or poor security. beats the hassle of cancelling the card and waiting for a new one (tigerdirect)

this is the part of the forum where people spend money. I spent money on something I personally endorse along with other AT members, and there has been a problem. Are you bright enough to make the connection here? Maybe I should post this in OT next time so some neffer will suddenly think twice about buying ink.

"Junk we already know."

What exactly did you know?

Not entirely correct. Consumers are liable for the first $50 of fraud. Most companies will cover the entire costs but there have been cases of some ghetto credit card companies that will stick it to you.

So Chase Bank told you that Megatoners has "weak security?" How the hell does Chase know?

So, did this caller, supposedly from Chase Security, convince your parents to sign up for a credit card monitoring service, for about $9.95 per month? protecting them against identity and financial fraud, threats to privacy, and misinformation. That is not much to spend each month for a little peace of mind.

Christ, don't bite the guys head off for trying to be helpful. I for one don't read any section of AT besides this one on a regular basis. Since this is the thread where people use their credit cards to spend money I can see the logic in posting this here.

Thanks for the heads up popper.

Ahhh...I stopped using megatoners when they sent me a batch of ink with the expiration flaps ripped off, when I called them on it they told me tough luck.

There are other/better ink resellers so it's not like it's a big loss.

That would be an interesting scam twist.

Popper -- a) how did you know it was security and b) you didn't buy anything as a result of the xaction, did you?

Megatoners has come thru for me. I just hope I'm not coming thru for everyone else. Tankx for the heads up. Megatoners is usually a hot deal and posting this here is the absolute right thing to do. Let the windbags blow.

the only information from this post is that his parents credit card had fraudlent charges.. calling out a company and saying who did what is just a witch hunt... there's nothing to show that megatoners has anything wrong with them, credit card numbers can be easily generated randomly computer programs..

A a computer generated card number seems more likely? He said that he had not shopped with that credit card online in 3 months, and that the charges came soon after ordering from MT. While it may not be enough to charge MT it should be enough to give people on this forum a warning to watch your cards if you have shopped with MT recently.

As I thought I showed in my op, I am very careful when it comes to using credit cards online because my dad is very untrustworthy and unknowledgeable of technology, and thus we rarely ever buy stuff online. I used virus scanners and checked for trojans to see if this could have somehow been my fault, and all results came up negative.

When the call came, I asked to talk to the Chase person on the other line because it was painfully obvious that somehow someone had gotten all our credit card information around the time that I had made the purchase through megatoners. Maybe the Chase person was just trying to calm me down, but as I'm not an expert on intercepting data or credit card fraud, I wasn't one to ask for specifics.

All I know is that myself and many other ATers have made purchases through Megatoners in the past, and I'm just putting the word out there that there possibly could be a connection between the theft of my parents CC information and the purchase at megatoners.

If you don't care for this warning then leave. It's not like I'm saying megatoners is selling our CC's or anything.

Agreed. This post contains good information to know. I don't understand why people just want to be bxtch about the others.
