In my area UPS has terrible service compared to FedEx. They consistently leave packages (some very expensive) at the door without waiting for signatures. They've left deliveries while I was at home without bothering to knock or ring the doorbell. Their customer service sucks big time. I've called & tried to get them to hold for pickup & they refuse unitl they 'attempt at least one delivery' when I've told them no one would be home to receive the package, then come home to find they left something really expensive outside my door all day. Terrible service.

FedEx is like night & day to UPS. Never leave anything without a signature, always rings the bell & waits a minute or so. I've even ordered something on-line, got the tracking # & called FedEx WHILE THE PACKAGE WAS IN TRANSIT & asked that it be held for delivery. They re-route while it is in their system & hold it so I can pick it up while I'm on my way home from work. Comparing the two services is a joke. FedEx has it all over UPS.

OH HELL! UPS sucks snot in my area. It takes forever to get a UPS delivery from California compared to 2 days via FEDEX. Newegg, the main reason I ordered from you was becuase of the fast shipping that used to be free in most cases.

How you doing Mwave, Zipzoomfly, etc, etc. Nice to meet you.

Neweggs gotten to large and its starting to show. I see their ads everywhere on the web and in magazines.

Learned a long time ago to get everything delivered to my office rather than the house. Number one, don't have to worry about packages getting left outside. Number two, business service beats the crud out of home delivery. Both the UPS and Fedex guys who do our office deliveries are real pros.

As a word of advice, pack your stuff well and don't put "Fragile" on the box. I heard from employee friends at UPS that they rough those packages pretty well, especially fragile ones.

In my area (Central NY), UPS is much better than Fedex. Fedex has about a 50% success rate delivering to my house (I order from Newegg alot). They've told me before that my house doesn't exist, that they couldn't get to the door because of the dogs (I didn't have any dogs at the time, and my cat is an indoor one), and that they had a letter from my address on file enabling them to leave the package un-signed for. Of course, the letter was from a MARINA (I requested a copy). I live in a city. Miles away from any body of water. This one, however, is the best...I live on Orchard Ave. They left my package at my house number on Orchard Street. The problem is, my house number on Orchard St. would be the PARKING LOT FOR THE POST OFFICE. They left the package next to one of the blue mailboxes in the parking lot of the post office.

Part of the problem with Newegg's prices on FedEx going higher is the fact FedEx recently raised their prices because of the fuel costs.......heard UPS is looking to do the same thing, but is keeping an eye on the impact of FedEx's increase is having on their volume.

And that's the absolute bloody truth! We have access to my wife's UPS corporate account at her place of employment......employees can ship via UPS under the company's corporate account. MUCH cheaper prices, never any upcharges for overweight or oversized packages, and we've noticed the packages arrive at their destinations much faster and in much better shape, from what our ebay customers have told us.

This is a "loss leader" promotion - it won't last. For instance, I just ordered a video card from newegg, with 3-day UPS delivery for $3. It turns out that it is being shipped to me from a newegg source in Edison, New Jersey. I looked up the UPS rate for one pound (the minimum) for Three Day Select delivery to me: $13.56!

FedEx is way better as far as being faster in my area. I just didnt appreciate having a 7800Gt and a motherboard left at the front door of my apartment complex.

Sorry Steve, but you absolutely cannot compare a rate given a corportation such as Newegg who can guarantee acertain volume of shipping against what an individual gets on the UPS webpage for prices.

Consider.....I shipped a 1968 Schwinn Stingray bicycle from GA to TX last year. It was in a bicycle box, same as you see in bike shops.....huge, long, big. It weighed over 35#.........now go to the UPS website and take my zip of 30467 and plug in any TX (around Dallas) zipcode with box dimensions of 59" x 29" x 8". Bet it comes up to more than the $13 we paid to ship it.

That's because we access a corp. UPS account, no oversize box fees, no overweight fees. And the bike was delivered in two days without paying 2-day fees. You simply cannot compare a corporate account to what an individual off the street pays for shipping UPS.

This gives us a huge shipping cost advantage when selling on ebay.....we typically undercut everyone else selling the same item on shipping......and make profit on it besides. Profit$$$$$$

To follow up............consider what Trek, the largest U.S. bike company pays for shipping their bikes. The typical adult bike box is like the dimensions I listed above.......59x29x8. I have a few in my shed for large items I sell on ebay.

Now, they typical low-to-mid-range adult bicycle weighs around 25# and up.......so assume a 28# shipping weight. How in the world could Trek ship a box that big and that heavy and not impact the price of a $250 bicycle negatively? A box that large is at least oversize #1 and that incurs a 70# shipping weight, no matter the true weight. They do it with a corporate account......something individuals cannot and will not access from UPS or FedEx because those rates are rather confidential and individual to each corp., depending on guaranteed volume each can commit to each month/quarter/year.

That's how Newegg's UPS prices are so cheap as their FedEx prices were until their price increase.

UPS and FedEx rates are exactly the same when rates are negotiated by the Seller correctly. This negotiation is very important and can include overseas, overnight air, two day ect. I just negotiated a xx% discount with FedEx and an extra x% for nine weeks as an incentive. Now I can do two things with rates: one, give it all to my customers, or two, keep all or some. The larger you are the bigger the discount that can be negotiated. For the largest companies the discounts are at the highest. Newegg pays the least shipping charges. They can then sell product cheaper. They can make money on shipping. Sweet for them. UPS and FedEX are giving away the farm for market share. You will see companies switching back and forth based on the discounts. Two years ago FedEX had 6% of the ground market. Now it is 20%.

As for service FedEx ground is individually owned independent contractors. UPS is company owned. UPS service is mandated the same everywhere, whereas FedEx does have guildelines, but due to the independent nature of the contractors each are may be slightly different.

C'DaleRider - You are talking about oversize 2 UPS rates. FedEx for oversize 2 defaults to 50 lbs. These are all negotiable. Smaller companies do not have the knowledge to negotiate every single price in their contract. They also don't have the leverage to maximize savings. Small companies have tremendous problems in competing with large companies in all phases of business.

For those that plan to go into business someday make sure your study the contracts offered. My recent negotiation saved us over 1k a week and we are a smallish company.

I had to laugh when I read some of the posts here. I've got a note constantly taped to my door asking the UPS and Fedex driver to ring the door bell. I've started to walk out my front door and tripped over packages from both of them. I finally stopped both of them and personally asked them to be a bit more respectful of my packages because they are usually computer parts. The Fedex driver said he had a million packages to deliver and was in a hurry. I told him I was the customer and I wanted My packages safe and announced. Haven't had a problem with either since. My postal driver actually comes up and hand delivers packages instead of leaving them in the mail box. Now that rocks. I just sent out a comp case and chose US Postal because of the service and price I've gotten.

For a few years I used both shipping computer stuff for a living, shipped over 5,000 packages in 12 months using both services and found that they both equal quality work. Any variability is in our minds.

UPS has just delivered packages for the day and my package has been sitting 60 miles away for 27 hours. Note the "On Time" status and scheduled delivery date thrown in for a laugh. As usual, here's another delivery I can hate UPS for:

Status: In Transit -
On Time
Scheduled Delivery: Oct 13, 2005
Shipped to: xxxxxxx, CA, US
Shipped or Billed on: Oct 10, 2005

Tracking Number: 1Z 5X1 56X xxxxxxxxxx
Service Type: 3 DAY SELECT
Weight: .70 Lb
Note: Your package is in the UPS system and is on time with a scheduled delivery date of Oct 13, 2005.

Package Progress:

Date/
Time Location Activity

Oct 12, 2005
1:46 P.M. ONTARIO, CA, US ARRIVAL SCAN
Oct 11, 2005
3:44 P.M. DALLAS/FT. WORTH A/P, TX, US DEPARTURE SCAN
Oct 10, 2005
8:29 P.M. US BILLING INFORMATION RECEIVED
6:17 P.M. DALLAS/FT. WORTH A/P, TX, US ORIGIN SCAN

Tracking results provided by UPS: Oct 13, 2005 6:06 P.M. Eastern Time (USA)

Will the UPS guy even bother showing up tomorrow with the late package? Flip a coin, that's just as accurate as any 50/50 prediction. I guess I shouldn't expect my 3 day delivery package before Monday (5 business days)... or Tuesday (6 business days).

Dude, tracking is one area that UPS blows FedEx out of the water. While I stated before that they both work well for me, the one thing I can NEVER count on is FedEx tracking. I have had it say packages are on the car for delivery and it won't be delivered for another 2 days, no notes or status change, still on the car. Thats not to say they don't get it to me on-time, just that their tracking blows.

Fed-Ex super saver has always been one of Neweggs best features. I like the fact that Fed-ex will leave a package with zero problem if I leave a note in advance. UPS refuses to honor notes at my apartment, which sometimes requires me to make a long cross-town drive during rush hour to pickup the package at the UPS station. Fed-Ex has never forced me to use this option.

I'm so amazed that UPS missed the deadline and I can track the package sitting in a warehouse.

I think Fed-ex tracking is pretty good, but this is maybe because I rarely use it because the package is usually there before I think about tracking it.

I have yet had a FedEx package get to me on the first attempt, on numerous tries for various things, ei. newegg/ebay. One time, FedEx send an item to the wrong address and I had to call about it, which is the norm with my experince with them, the driver took 2 days to backtrack and find the package which the person at the other house had already opened, luckily he didnt have a clue what the item was so he didnt use it, but when the driver finally made it back to my house he taped the box back up and left it on my doorstep, no knock, no doorbell, nothing for me to sign or lookover if I wanted to refuse the package at that point, what a POS person.

My other experiences have been that the driver will just throw, yes THROW, my package onto my doorstep, we have about 10 steps from the ground level of our yard to our front porch and the guy throws my pc parts around!? WTF!? The reason I know this is because Im usually sitting in my living room watching tv waiting for my package, which they have never been delivered before 4pm in my area, even on some morning delivery items Ive paid for.

FedEx = teh suck in my area
Never had a problem with UPS, knock on wood.

Oh yeah, was reading about some others mentioning USPS, which also rocks in my area, they are actually the best method of shipping to me. USPS>UPS>something>another something>Santa Claus>Easter Bunny>spawns from hell>antichrist>FedEx
