You would have to have spent $3,500 worth of qualifying purchases on your Discover Card to earn a $20 Cashback Bonus.

Not very.
Below are the problems I see with this.

1. LOTR is NOT available at Borders for under $10 with Discover CC & MIR
2. To do this you have to have a Discover card on which you have ALREADY made enough purchases to qualify for $20 in cash back bonus.
3. You have to then SPEND $20 of what is ALREADY YOUR MONEY (your bonus) to get a $40 Borders certificate.
4. You have to wait for that certificate to arrive - which can take weeks.
5. You have to see if it is usable online - does anyone know?
6. Then maybe you can order the dvd set if the $10 MIR still applies.
7. I believe that in order to get the $10 rebate you have to have purchased BOTH the theatrical version AND the collecter's gift set and have the receipts for both.

Well I don't know if I completely agree with your logic on that, it wouldn't really be your money if they didn't give any cash back "rewards", so I guess, by your logic, you're not really only spending $20 but actually $40 (since that would be the gift certificate amount).

I don't really see why this is a problem considering that the set won't actually be released for another month or so.

I'm pretty sure that you can use the GC online because Borders allows their GCs to be used both online and B&M

All rebate requests must be postmarked by March 1, 2003, and received by March 7, 2003.

Actually you are right on this point, that's my mistake, you do need to have purchased the theatrical-version as well.
So, then it would come out to $19.94 + tax (ships free)
You'd probably be able to do this B&M as well if you prefer.
Anyway, maybe I'm biased, but in my opinion this is a fairly hot deal for Discover Card members looking to spend their rewards somewhere.

I still see all of the things I listed as problems. No one else is required to see them as such if they do not wish to.


In my view, the actual hot deal is that you can get gift certificates for double the amount of the cash back bonus dollars you spend at Borders and many other stores such as Staples, Waldenbooks and Blockbuster to name a few. You can then use the certificate for anything at that store. See this thread for more details.
