Tile rendering performance is sub-par IMO. Also, WTF on removing location markers? That being said, I like the new tile styles, and being able to associate locations with your account for easy directions is nice.

Stock navigation sucks anyways, I'm shocked people even pay for it....or Garmin/navigation/aftermarket units.

Google maps is free and even with the latest shitty updates IMO it's still much better than my shitty Garmin that's been collecting dust every since I got my Android hehe

You must have had an old Garmin model, Garmin > Google Navigation. The proprietary navigation for Pioneer head units is also better. Google's offering is free, that's the really the only plus it has going for it. I honestly would pay monthly for Garmin or Pioneer's service if they weren't free over using Google for free.

Maybe it depends on the model, but both myself and my parents have Magellan units, my girlfriend has a Garmin, and Google Maps on my iPhone 5 is better than all of them.

Really? You like paying $2k for worse nav than you have on your phone? Even if nav is relatively good when released, its hopelessly outdated in a couple of years. Plus they typically lack traffic data without an extra fee, have expensive map updates, etc, etc.

Both of mine supply traffic data, are touch screen, 3d maps, and voice control on the steering wheel. No monthly fee.

I have used my phone before, and it can't touch a nice nav system. Maybe you haven't been experienced one in the last few years? No idea.

3. Slower

This x100. That's my primary complaint. My older work computer ran Google Maps and StreetView perfectly fine before. Now it's completely unusable.

My computer at work:
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

Lenovo
Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU
E2200 @ 2.20GHz
2.19 GHz, 2.00 GB of RAM
Physical Address Extension

NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT (AGP)

With the previous Google Maps, my web browser (Google Chrome) supported hardware acceleration just fine and performance was actually very impressive. Now, the whole computer just grinds and grinds (and grinds)...

I hope Google isn't changing things ONLY for the sake of change. It looks like lots of functionality is removed and the performance hit is just unexplainable.

Before, I could easily see where StreetView was available and where it was not.

Before, I could adjust the size of the inset overhead map view or even make it so StreetView was inset on the overhead map.

So you don't have navigation in your vehicle? I didn't know that was possible these days.

1) Not talking about mobile maps or navigation. We're talking about maps.google.com

2) Even if we were talking about mobile maps / navigation, that's a stupid, stupid, stupid statement.

Lots of cars, even new ones, don't have built-in navigation. You know this. It's almost like you're bragging that yours does, even though it's not something to brag about. I experienced nav systems in a couple luxury cars (loaners) and it was absolutely terrible.

I don't know if it's a feature of the new Google maps or just something Google has started rolling out, but suddenly I'm getting user photographs as street view options basically everywhere on the planet. I was using Google Maps to scope out Jamaica before the wife and I honeymooned there at the beginning of the month and none of it had street view; now it has user shots from basically everywhere on the island. And it's global; I spent a solid half hour revisiting the best vacation I ever took by looking at user shots from the Galapagos Islands. Crazy shit.

It's going to make Geoguessr hard as hell though...

Yeah, Google introduced "View" or something that integrates location shots into Google maps.

Is anyone else unable to link to places anymore?
I've been looking all over the place, searched the help database, but the old "link to this page" button appears to have gone. Which renders maps essentially useless on the desktop.

ever since i installed it my GPS has been searching for signal constantly

Same here and I refuse to turn on data location services. I switched to the Mapquest Android app and froze Google Maps. Works great so far and really fast GPS lock.

Places/My Maps seems to be gone

Which pisses me off cause I hate to use "navigation" turn by turn

I like to plan out my trip prior to departure and simply pull up blue line to follow (as I usually take back roads/scenic roads etc)

Now my trip planning is useless.

Well, Street View in old Google Maps doesn't work on my Windows 8 machine. It's a very recent reinstallation of Win8 with very few things installed.

Oops, Street View isn't supported in this version of your browser.

To access Street View, open your browser on the desktop, or download Google Chrome.

I've only ever used this computer from the "classic desktop" in Windows 8, but Street View seems to think I'm using Chrome in some kind of touch/tablet mode. This is a desktop computer with no touch input. I use it exclusively from the Classic Desktop.

I got in the beta since I use Google Maps a lot for work. In trying to streamline it, they've just made it even clunkier. Streetview is now a pain to use and I have no idea how indoor will work. You can't even see which buildings have it. You also have to zoom in all the way now to see location markers. I think they've tried to port the Android version to desktop, and it's just not working.
