The letter read as this:

<<
Enclosed is RMA #12345

This Biostar motherboard's battery cradle fell off/out during package inspection upon arrival.

Please apply credit to my credit card for the purchase price.

Thank you.

Certified A+ Technician
FCC Technician
Microsoft Administrator

When I read this out loud to my coworker preparing them for what was to come out of the Biostar box I held in my other hand, they loved the fact that he pointed out he was A+ certified and an FCC technician and Microsoft Administrator.

Wait a minute?!?

What's an FCC Technician? Does he make sure that PCs are not emmiting any radio waves harmful to the country's coffee makers?

What's a Microsoft Administrator? He administrating Microsoft? He's not IT head or Network Administrator. No no no.... He's a MICROSOFT administrator. Obviously not an MCSE because if he was those initials would be wedged between A+ Technician and FCC Technician.

By now, everyone in the room is rolling on the floor just from having this read to them and I haven't even had a chance to comment on anything or show them the motherboard.

Now, I gave this RMA. When I talked to the guy, I figured MAYBE the cradle was soldered on improperly or if only one of the two contacts was soldered it could easily break loose or maybe even damages caused from shipping could have occured. More than anything I just wanted to see the board for myself so I gave the RMA, but honestly I've NEVER seen a motherboard where the CMOS battery cradle just "fell off".

I pulled the board out of the box and out of the static bag. The battery cradle was detached, but close inspection of the board showed that the cradle was in fact soldered to the board at both points and the solder was all of the way through the PCB. This cradle obviously BROKE off.

The box showed absolutely no damage to it what so ever and everything was in near mint condition.

Except for one thing.....

There were some plastic stand offs still in the board and marring in the PCB where mounting screws had been tightened down.

Yep. You got it. The board was USED.

I'm sorry.... but if a battery cradle just "fell" off a motherboard as I pull it out of the box, I'm certainly not going to go ahead and mount the board to my PC and see if I could go ahead and use it.

MAN this guy was stoooooooooooooooopid to think that I wouldn't notice.

Must've been that last microwave tower he inspected for the FCC that fried his brain!

I'm curious to know what kind of numbers we are looking at in a typical day of RMA'ing and what % of those are as moronic as this FCC guy?
