Not only is George Lucas hacking up the original Star Wars Trilogy, he's being a hypocrite while doing it!

From IMDB.com

George Lucas, a longtime foe of "colorized" movies, has sharply criticized Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment's decision to release two Three Stooges DVDs today (Tuesday) that will allow viewers to watch them in either their original black-and-white or digitally colored versions. In an interview with the Associated Press, Lucas said, that the Stooges' slapstick comedy belongs in a black-and-white universe. "Would color distract from their comedy and make it not as funny anymore?" Lucas said. "Maybe just the fact that they're in black and white makes it funny, because their humor is dated. But by putting it in black and white, it puts it in a context where you can appreciate it for what it was. But you try to make it in full living color and try to compare it to a Jim Carrey movie, then it's hard for young people to understand. ... It's not fair to the artist."

So, he has a problem with people changing the classic Three Stooges films while he himself changes his own classic film? Oh my gosh, George: JUST STOP!

There's a difference between re-doing your own work, and re-doing someone else's. Chill.

but the most important thing here is CHOICE. at least Columbia is allowing the viewers to chose between both versions, while Blucas is not giving you a choice by changing the Original SW and not including the original theatrical versions.

I think you make a good point about "choice", and see nothing wrong with a colorized version accompanying the black and white original.

I also like the way that DVD's are encouraging people to make extended versions of popular movies available (LOTR as a prime example). As long as these DVD versions just add material to (not delete anything from) the original theatrical version, then I'm not too concerned about its sanctity. I've never felt that the time constraints imposed by the venue necessarily "right sized" the result. However, it would seem reasonable to accommodate your opposite view.

I was upset w/ lucas until I realized I was waiting to buy the LOTR movies (and others from time to time) when the extended super deluxe a bunch of extra footage has been added DVD's. If I can enjoy different stuff after seeing it in the theaters with a new movie why can't I enjoy it with an old one too.

Anyway, I'm not sure if I'll buy the re-re-reedited sw's dvd's but I'll definitely want to see them out of curiousity.

Ah well, it is interesting his stance on the stooges. Not sure how I feel, given the argument that it's not the original director making the changes vs lucas changing content and not just adding footage/effects.

If you don't like the Trilogy coming out, just get the LD ripped version of the old trilogy on DVD. Or better yet, buy a LD player and buy the trilogy on LD.

But I do understand you pain Saltboy.

You just mentioned the reason. Although I'm not going to pass judgement until I see them.
