I just got a new motherboard and processor
MSI neo 2 w/ amd athlon 64 3200+

I put it all together, but it's not posting. I have tried everything.

For some reason when I flip the power switch on the back the fans start and everything, except I didn't hit the power switch. Ok. I hit the power switch and the system shuts down. Now when I hit the power switch nothing happens. I unplug it and wait awhile and it does the same thing.

I have even gone to just the bare essentials, video card/memory/keyboard, and it does the same thing.

I am so mad right now

I know all the other components work because I'm using them right now in my old motherboard and cpu to post this message.

The motherboard and cpu were supposedly tested before they were shipped out to me. I hope I didn't do anything wrong when I assembled it. I don't know what I could of done wrong, I followed the directions and everything. I've put together my current system tons of time without error.

Take the motherboard out of the case, place it on a bit of cardboard removing any staples or bits of metal from the cardboard. Add the CPU, one stick of RAM, and a video card, and see if it'll fly.

If it does, then it's more than likely something's shorting out.

I did that and it does the exact same thing.

Reset the CMOS. Follow the instructions in the manual. They may require removing the battery in conjunction with moving a jumper.

If this doesn't do it, then remove the RAM and see if you can get a beep code out of it.

I didn't try resetting the cmos, but I think I removed the ram and it did the same thing. I can't remember if I did that or not.

Well you're down to barebones now. All you can do is remove and reseat the Proc, Vid Card and Memory. Remove them one at a time and see if you can get a beep code out of it.

If you can't get a beep code, the mobo is bad.

One thought. If the mobo doesn't have a speaker, better connect the one from the case.

Do the CMOS though first.

I have reseated all of the above. I have not had any beeps at all.. :/

Is it possible that just the processor is bad, or would the motherboard beep if the processor is bad?

I know for sure I installed the processor correct, applied thermal compound and everything.

sucks

The mobo should give you a beep code with any one of those components removed.

As I said, remove each component one at a time and start the system. You should get a beep (error) code.

No code > bad mobo. Whether the Proc is bad, I can't say. I assume you bought this from the same outfit. They most likely will want both components back for exchange.

CMOS didn't make any difference eh?

I haven't tried the cmos, but I will in a little bit. I'm just gathering as much info as I can before I disassemble this pc I'm posting from and put the new motherboard/proc back in to test.

I assumed you still had this board out on a piece of cardboard. I would try all this out of the case first if possible. Just like Dopefiend suggested. Mobo, Proc, Mem, Vid Card ONLY. Out of the case on cardboard.

Probably easier to pull the Power Supply out of the case you have to test this all out. You can start the system by momentarily shorting across the two pins the Power Switch connector from the case go to. A spare PS makes this even easier.
