Thanks, I got one. But those "free" keyboards are a rip! You have to add $5 for shipping if you get the gifts, whereas just the enclosure itself ships free.

God there are so many different kinds. Is there any difference between chip sets? Some say they have cypress, others say NEC. Some say support up to 200 gig hd, others say 200gig hd. Which is the one to get? Neweggs is out of stock so it looks like its Dealsonic, but which one? thanks.....

Got mine just about an hour ago. Works excellent, XP found it without any extra drivers!! This is smoking for me since I am 56k. I can take it to work and d/l stuff on the T1 and copy it to this drive there then bring it home an xfer to the PC!

Take that you 550mb desert combat updates!!

Checkout this comment at newegg for this item:

"Used with Seagate 120GB IDE drive. Installed easy, recognized by wink2 sp4 no problem. Copied 20GB of backup data to drive. Then I tried to open a large zip file (250MB) and got an extract failure. Gulp. The more I tried the more erros it found. Cycled power on the drive and it was fine again for a minute. After trying to localize the problem I traced it down to the ALI controller in the usb enclosure. This chip gets *screaming* hot during any prolonged read! If I keep the chip cool there are no read errors. It is not warm in the enclosure either. The power rails are ok. Don't know if I got a bad one or they are all this way..."

I seem to have the exact same problem as that person. Looks like it's with the Ali chipset. Or I may just have a bad one.

Also see this, seems like a known problem with this enclosure:

DVD writer problem in this enclosure

Seems like these new revisions of this enclosure are bad. I'm rmaing mine.

I have posted my problem with this enclosure in more detail on the bigwallet thread. The info I posted above I just found and relates very much to my problem. Your important compressed file may not be recoverable after copying it to the external drive then copying it back.

Please check if you have any of these problems or not and post.

I have had one for a week with no problems. I'm running a Pioneer A06 Retail in that same case (ALI chipset). I have only burned 8 dvd's but no problems so far. WinXP Pro, no extra drivers.

works with drives up to 200gb, personally tested. no complaints.

I got my BYTECC one from Newegg. It's much bigger then I thought It would be especially since I'm using it for a HDD. I think I'm going to order the one you listed since they are much smaller and just use my BYTECC for a DVD burner or something. They are on back order right now, any other place to find one? Also will it work with pc's that have usb 1.0?

Thanks

so ive decided i want a 3.5" Firewire enclosure. (i already have a combo usb 2.0/firewire 5.25" enclosure im gonna stick my DVD+RW in)
i wanna get a 3.5" to keep it portable, so i found these two,
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?DEPA=1&sumit=Go&description=BYTECC%2CME%2D350F&searchdepa=1
and
http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=ME-720U2F

one is aluminum, and the other has USB 2.0 and a built in fan. Im a little worried about heat cause im planning on running video editing and games off it.
any input would be Great. the one at compgeeks seems like a really good deal if its good with heat.

I got that same enclosure from Computergeeks but in the 5.25 sze. After months of use the fan got really loud for some reason. It got so loud that I ended up taking the fan out. So now I run it without the fan. I'll like to replace the fan but it is hard to find a place that sells 40mm fans......

So besides from the loud fan the enclouse works great.

i ordered 3 enclosures over the weekend, and got them last night. I was surprised to see they were Bytecc, as my combo firewire/usb2 DVD-R/RW enclosure is also a Bytecc. Stacks nicely on one another. A little loud with their fans, but saved me the trouble of putting together another system to store drives.
