If you don't return it, I wouldn't ask anyone there to be a job reference...Yeah it's only a $20 max kb/mouse but if it would jeopardize employment at another company then I would just return it.

True, though my planned reference from there is a good friend and not a puppet of the company (though she's still working there), and the company is legally required to provide employment verification.

Either way, I'll offer to mail it back if they provide a fedex label.

you tell them to come and pick it up or to pay for the shipment. Just collaborate with them to help them get them back, but don't spend your money on it.
Put a lot of dick hair in the keyboard before.

I see a lot of vague suggestions here, but not the obvious. Strap it to a rocket and be done with it!

I would ship it via purolator high priority... COD.

On serious note, the shipping label idea, or having one of them pick it up is the best idea. If you had quit/retired,then maybe I'd take the time to go drop it off, but laid off? Heck no, don't do anything for them if they can't do anything for you.

If your job ended on the day you were notified of the layoff (so you never went home and back to work after being notified) then they should deal with the cost/effort of getting their equipment back.

If you were notified in advance that your job would be ending then it's your fault that you forgot to return them and your employer should not bear the cost of getting their property back.

Never burn bridges. I'd ask them to give you their Fedex account # so you can send it. Otherwise I'd just return and say "it was good while it lasted" with a smile.

Stealing aint right.

I say slap a shipping label on the keyboard, tape a stamp on, and drop it in the mailbox.

I found it ironic that you posted this 7 days before getting laid off:
I pretty much always work, at my day job, at 10% of my potential and ability. I get the job done but am no longer the bright star that I once was - mostly because 2 years of being the office bad ass hasn't gotten me a promotion or a raise or even recognition. I understand that it's the economy, that no one is getting raises at my company... It also completely pissed that the company I work for doesn't promote within the company - they constantly hire new people for new positions (it's not limited to me). I'm guessing their attitude is that new faces help grow a company, but where's our incentive to work your way up??

Besides the fear of getting fired, I feel completely unmotivated and am honestly pretty bored as well... I constantly see kids out of college try so hard to be the rock star of the office, stomping down the hall way with purpose and having this attitude of being able to take on the world, but I just don't care anymore.. Am I doomed, or is this just life?

And now, you're considering keeping their keyboard & mouse? Yeah, if I had a name to associate with a couple of these posts, no way in hell I'd hire you. Just return the mouse & keyboard. No sense in burning bridges.

you're misinterpreting his posts.

1) it's not his intention to steal. it's the hassle / cost of returning pos items.

2) can't blame him for not giving a shit when the company didn't give a shit about him before letting him go. working your tail off deserves rewards / some type of recognition.

and the company is legally required to provide employment verification.
Just so you know, there are ways around this.

Legal question: Is so-and-so eligible for rehire?
Legal answer: No.

They can even beat around the bush with answers like "definitely not" or "never" or "not under any circumstances".

Draw your own conclusions.

while yes im sure his attitude and work habits helped him get laid fof It is NOT thieft.

there is NO reason he should have to spend any kind of money returning it. but he shouldn't ignore it either.

just call them back and ask for a the fedex account or a shipping label. if they say no bring it back in say you do not have any plans to head that way and are not makeing a trip for it.

odds are they will just forget it. but there is NO way that the OP should spend any money at all shipping it out.

Did you somehow miss the part where his whole team got canned? Also, where in his post do you see that he intends to keep the keyboard and mouse? I only see someone not wanting to drive 20 miles to the place he got canned. The pick up tag idea is perfectly acceptable.

There's nothing ironic about his post, the only thing though it might have been a bit of foreshadowing to what was in store.

Unless he was terminated the day he was given notice, he had 7 days according to DrPizza to bring it with him to work during his normal commute. He chose not to return it when it was convenient and is not being petty in attempt to stick it to his former employer for laying him off. He should grow up and return the equipment his employer lent him to do his job at home. It is his responsibility to return it, not the company's -- I bet they didn't ship it to his house when he first got it.

1) I was laid off 20 minutes before the end of work on a Friday. I did not get any notice and my post written 7 days before my termination was a coincidence..
2) My "attitude" had nothing to do with me getting fired -I wasn't the only one laid off (they merged two departments into one) and the SVP specifically told me "This isn't performance based at all, we're merging two departments"
3) I'm calling them today to ask for a shipping label or fedex account.. WOuld have done it yesterday had I not spent a good portion of the day trying to get a replacement for an insurance suspension letter they (HR) mailed to the wrong address even though I notified them of my change of address months before I was laid off.. argh..

Is it a "dick move"? Yes. Should you go out of your way, pay anything, even get off your ass to get it back to them? No.
