Since my kids were born I haven't gotten much time to play sports and now that they are older, I find myself back at the gym for pick up basketball and signed up for a flag football league. Trouble is I don't sweat while I play and just get really hot. Last two times I played basketball, I had to just use water to keep the heat off. When I get into my car then I start to sweat. Yesterday it was 81 outside for our first football game and I couldn't sweat. I was afraid of a heat stroke so i had to dial down my activity. Anyway to jump start the sweating?

have you ever had any spinal injuries?

i'm reminded of mike utley he broke his neck in a football game and was rehabilitated and able to walk and workout again but he can't sweat due to nerve damage cause by his spinal injury.

So, I Googled and simplest answer would be you're dehydrated, which I have personally experienced, but it could be something else: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/e...cle/003219.htm

This - most likely it is dehydration though - aren't drinking enough during the day to sweat during sports maybe? Try increasing your intake during the day prior to sports. Otherwise - check out the other options. I use to not sweat much or very little - but at the time my water intake was maybe 8 oz a day... A glass of milk for breakfast (which isn't good for hydration)... and a soda/milk for dinner - not very great... Now I hardly drink any milk or sodas - and get about 50 oz of water a day - sweat bullets if working/working out.

When I got into shape I went from a sweating pig at 235 pounds that could run maybe for 90 seconds to a 200 pound slim pig that could run an 8K and barely sweat. I lost weight and I think my body got more efficient with cooling when I exercised. That is, I didn't start sweating immediately anymore when exercising because my body "learned" that it didn't have to.

Any changes in weight/lifestyle/fitness?

It varies between people, but 50oz is way too little, regardless if you are a man/woman, etc.

I am a male, weigh about 185-190lb, and drink ~90-100oz a day, which is like the bare min for somebody my size.

You can't go wrong with the 8 classes a day thing, although I think that's even too little for somebody participating in heavy sports/exercise.

I'm pretty sure this is backwards.

https://www.inkling.com/read/medica...avid-bell-4th/chapter-28/heat-acclimatization

During exposure to hot environments, cardiovascular adaptations that reduce the heart rate required to sustain a given level of activity in the heat appear quickly and reach nearly their full development within 1 week. Changes in sweating develop more slowly. After acclimatization, sweating begins earlier and at a lower core temperature (i.e., the core temperature threshold for sweating is reduced). The sweat glands become more sensitive to cholinergic stimulation, and a given elevation in core temperature elicits a higher sweat rate. In addition, the glands become resistant to hidromeiosis and fatigue, and so higher sweat rates can be sustained. These changes reduce the levels of core and skin temperatures reached during a period of exercise in the heat, increase the sweat rate, and enable one to exercise longer. The threshold for cutaneous vasodilation is reduced along with the threshold for sweating, and so the heat transfer from the core to the skin is maintained. The lower heart rate, lower core temperature, and higher sweat rate are the three classic signs of heat acclimatization

Well I'm sure there's nothing wrong in terms of nerve damage or such since after basketball I did sweat in the car. I'm guessing the water might be the big issue. I usually just have a can of ice tea during the day and two glasses of water at home.

I suffered this and what happened was your body has no stamina and you may have sweated slightly on the forehead but no place else.

I bet you do not sleep very well and are a real tosser/turner durring the night.

First step go buy a spinner bike.

First time on one I pedaled for 30 minutes. Afterwards I felt so dead and had to sleep on the couch for 1 hour to get my energy back.

Also getting older we make less vitamins for our body so you must take extra Vitamin D3,and vitamin B complex. take both at lunch and next day you will feel great/normal. Keep spinning at least once a week to get your stamina up to normal levels.

LOL, damn. How are you not dead yet? My girlfriend ended up in the hospital once due to dehydration, lol, so be careful. I haven't ever gone that far, but if I can tell because I sweat profusely on a normal day -- even in the winter.

On an off day, usually when I'm stressed about something, I go on the elliptical for a couple hours and I just about stop sweating.

I sort of thought the newer thinking on hydration throughout the day was to drink when you are thirsty rather than trying to follow some magic amount. Unless there is something amiss, generally your body will say "I'm thirsty" when it is time to get a drink.

Anecdotal evidence, but since I have gotten in better and better shape running, I find that I sweat a lot more than I used to. At least for me, the better shape I am in the more I seem to sweat.

I had heard that if you feel thirsty, you're already dehydrated and should have already started replenishing fluids.

This is the same for me and is borne out in the article I linked and others I've seen.

Both are what I've heard repeatedly, both in casual environments and in high activity / high stress / high heat environments.

I generally drink about 2 water bottles (32oz I believe) a day, along with two 8oz cups of black coffee while at work and another bottle between when I get home and hit the gym and one afterwards.

I think the best gauge is how clear to yellow your pee is, without having any other information, at least. Sweating could also be a product of just how your body regulates heat as well. Growing up in a much harsher environment than my basic training was in (and it was in San Antonio, TX), I didn't sweat nearly as much as everyone else, despite being in arguably decent shape. I still don't sweat much, even when hydrated.

But, I did play sports year round in Houston since I could walk. Perhaps, I adapted?
