Not using native res on Dell 2001FP - how bad for games?

Hi,

I'm very close to buying a Dell 2001FP. I've thought long and hard about my choice - almost went for the 2005FPW but I don't want widescreen and I'm wary of the backlight issues etc..

So I'm ready to place my order... but one last question. If I play games at a resolution lower than native (1600x1200), will it look crap? I would expect it won't look perfect, but will it be a very noticeable difference? I just don't think my machine could drive CS:S at 1600x1200 with all settings on high (it currently gets about 70fps avg with all settings high and res of 1024x768).

Any 2001FP owners - could you please do a very quick test and tell me what you think? I don't want to spend AUD $1125 (about USD $840) on a monitor only to find that I have to choose between crippling my framerate or making the game look crap.

Thanks

The scaling on the 2001FP is actually pretty good, I've used it before. I don't bother running at lower resolutions much on my current 2005FPW (my 6800GT handles games just fine at that resolution), but when I do, it's quite acceptable.

Welcome to the forums.

One more thing... when I was browsing the forums I found a list of games which currently support widescreen. Now I can't find it for the life of me - I spent about half an hour searching. Anyone link me?

Wait for Dell to run some of its discounts and stack on some coupon codes... The 2001FP can be had for about 400-450USD pretty regularly. I got one for 560USD quite a few months back, I love it to death!

The scaling is very good. I bet you won't even notice it too much. I play Rome Total War on mine, and the max resolution on that's only 1024x768 I think.

Unfortunately there are no such discounts in Australia. Occasionally there are coupon things, but we don't get the crazy 35% discounts and stuff.

Besides, at AUD $1125 the 2001FP is still cheaper than a Samsung 193P or other competitor.

I play CS:S on 1600x1200 with all the settings set to high, I've never played it with another monitor so I can't compare but I can say I don't even notice any ghosting. Or if I did, my eyes can't see it. And this is coming from someone who can tell a monitor is flickering with a really low refresh rate.

The scaling is awesome. It look sreally good non-native. I can't honestly tell the difference in MOHAA and BF1942 (yeah they are old games) between native and non-native resolutions.

1280 x 1024 looks great
1152 x 864 looks great
1024 x 768 looks great

I use a desktop res of 1280x960. It looks fine. Obviously not razor sharp as at 1600x1200, but still good.

IMO, the best resolution for gaming on the 2001FP is 1280x1024 or 1600x1200, if your game and vid card support it. I don't have a single game that I cannot play at one of these two resolutions on my current setup. I have not tried 1024x768, so you will have to try it out and see for yourself. This is a great monitor though, and you will be very happy with it. I know I am.
