For future reference don't buy stuff on the day of release. Wait a month or so.

1. Got ivy bridge on day of release. After the hype it's only a bit faster than previous chips. It heats faster because of cheap thermal paste and does not overclock as much.

2. Wasting a whole day or two trying to find a good 680.

3. Got msi gtx 670 yesterday. Now they are saying the reference cooler is noisy and won't last and nvidia is laughing all the way to the bank with my money.

In future Remember :

Your old computer has not overnight become obsolete.
Let the dust settle. Let prices and reviews and views of people who've bought the stuff after a month be your base for a more reliable informed decision on what to buy.
Get a girlfriend and go out more. Computers are not Everything.

ALL LIES!

In all seriousness, I agree. However...I think Ivy is worth it in the long run due to PCIe 3.0 on the z77s.

I had a girlfriend, she dumped me because I wouldn't spend all my money on some stupid louis vuitton or gucci purse for her (she already had 3), so I went out and built a new ivy bridge HTPC!

Personally I feel that the Ivy Bridge has alot more processing power than a gucci purse. I was not impressed with the performance very much, and even the most expensive Ivy Bridge is far less than a cheaper Gucci bag.

I was more interested in Ivy Bridge for the power consumption, I think they're great processors, but yeah overall performance isn't much better than sandy bridge :/

Sounds more of like a case of actually doing research before buying.

1. I was much more excited about the Z77 chipset (and resulting mini ITX motherboards) than Ivy Bridge for the desktop. Ivy Bridge should be great for notebooks, however, due to the better IGP with similar power draw.

2. Usually not worth getting the top end of anything.

3. I'm hoping that some company comes out with a smaller cooler to take advantage of the smaller PCB.

You'd need a card 4x as powerful as the GTX 690 to reach 10% performance difference between 3.0 and 2.0. By the time the GTX 1290 is released, I think you'll be upgrading from Ivy.

i totally agree with Puma; i bought a Gucci purse on release day and wasn't impressed with the performance. I even slid a DVD in it and it wouldn't play!

anyway, OP, IB is a moot point - way before release you were told it's no improvement over SB, but for someone who *doesn't* have a SB rig, it's the right choice of CPU.

Yeah I am keeping with my OC'ed Sandy Bridge set after reading about all the heat issues involved with overclocking the Ivy Bridge.

Maybe not because I only recently felt the need to upgrade this system after 5 years.

That's a long time.

Wrong. With 7970 quadfire and 680 quad sli, pci e 3.0 is about 50% faster. If you go for 3+ cards you need pci e 3. For next gen dual gpu you will need 3.0 as well

Benchmarks?

Also, what makes you think that communication needs for dual-GPU setups will significantly increase next generation? You understand that SLI/CFX use the AFR technique for most games, right? Since the GPUs don't need to share much info in AFR, the link between the GPUs is mostly used for syncing final outputs, which is proportional to resolution and framerate.
