Notebook is giving me grief with OS upgrade

Howdy,

I'm trying to install Win2K onto a notebook, and I do know that it is compatible, as I have done this on an identical one previously.

Now the installation went fine, but when the system needed to reboot it seemed to hang when the Windows 2000 splash/loading screen appears. The bar that shows Windows 2000 loading progress was not moving at all. I kept rebooting and then another time I received a blue screen with a memory error.

Now the system hangs on the BIOS screen... it just sits and waits for the longest time, and now I get a keyboard 202 error... and I am not sure what that means.

One other thing, is that since I tried upgrading the screen powers on sometimes, and sometimes it does not.

This is a friend's notebook, and it is a good beginer notebook for him to learn on, so getting a new one is out of the question for now.

Any ideas about any of the mentioned problems?

Any and all help is much appreciated

bios updated? i'd start there. you did an upgrade over a previous OS? or a clean install?

Is it possible that the BIOS went faulty, or the BIOS chip went bad for some reason?

Now if I plug in the power supply and try to power it up, I get nothing... the little lights are on that indicate power is going to the notebook.

I am suddenly stumped here... maybe the BIOS chip went bad suddenly, or maybe something in the computer went really bad all of the sudden... I still get nothing when I press the power button

it sounds more like motherboard than bios. if you're not getting anything from the power button it shouldn't have anything to do with the OS you put on it. also try removing the battery, that might be failing as well.

yes! it can! hmmm, well it will lower your blood pressure. not sure about the laptop tho. like i said, try pulling the battery. sometimes when they go bad it'll cause some flakey stuff to happen. but past that, sounds like a major hardware problem. if you're comfortable taking it apart you can make sure all the connections inside are tight, but it's nothing like taking apart a desktop pc, so unless 1) you can live with breaking something or 2) you've done it before i would probably advise not doing it yourself.

I have experience with laptop disassembly, and I know how delicate you have to be. I have already had it disassembled to see if a connection or two was loose, but everything seemed to be fine. I even re-seated a few items just to be on the safe side.

One last trick I will try is obtaining a new BIOS chip (the chip on this laptop is removable) I believe it is a PLCC tyep BIOS chip. It will not cost a lot to get another and flash it... if that fails then it is safe to assume that a major hardware error/incident has occured, and it is most likely the mobo.

That will be the last attempt.

Have you tried updating the BIOS with a flash program? If not, that sounds like it maybe the route you could take.

Is this a possibility that someone told me could have happened?

"I never did like XP-sounds like you toasted the low
640k in the chipset. Before anything though, I would
remove the CMOS battery for a few seconds, and then
try it again. XP may have tried to write to the BIOs."

Sounds reasonable, but could it be a possibility?
