So, I decided that after finals end this week, I was going to go snowboarding with some friends this weekend. I don't snowboard, but I've been wanting to get into it for the last couple seasons. Anyway, since I'm going snowboarding, it'd be nice to have a snowboard. I was planning on renting one, until this happened:
I was outside with a friend of mine who is going with me on the snowboarding trip. He's never been snowboarding before, so we had a skateboard and were in front of my apartment trying to figure out if he was regular or goofy foot.
A neighbor of mine came outside and offered to let us borrow his skateboard, so that we could both ride around at once. We started talking to him about skateboarding and snowboarding and stuff. It turns out that a year ago he bought a brand new Rossignol snowboard with boots and bindings and never got around to using them. They still have stickers from the dealer on them.
On top of that, we got to talking about his OLD computer. He has a 120mhz PowerMac 8500. He wanted a new machine....
I told him that "I have a laptop exactly like this one (IBM T21 - my friend's machine) that I'll sell you for $350". He thoguht about it for a bit, and offered me $250 and the snowboard for the laptop.... let me tell you about the laptop.
So, a friend of mine works for a large company doing support and admin stuff for thier windows machines. When they retire old laptops (like IBM T21s) he gets a great deal on them. He doesn't need all the laptops he can get, and he hates dealing with ebay and the like, so he asked me if I knew anyone who needed a laptop. Well, I hooked him up with my friend, who bought the laptop for $350. A while later, he got another one and said "If you can get someone else to buy this for $350, I can get a third one for you for $175."
So, I sold the second laptop for $350, and he offered me the third machine for $175. At the time of the snowboard deal, I didn't actually have the third laptop, but as soon as I was done talking to the guy with the snowboard, I went over to my friend's place and picked it up. I told him I'd pay him later for it, when the guy with the snowboard paid me.
Last night, I traded my $175 laptop for a brand new snowboard with bindings, and $250 in cash. Now I just need to pay back the guy I got the laptop from.
Short version of the story: I got paid $75 to take a brand new snowboard off my neighbors hands.
I'm stoked on how this whole thing worked out
