hang sheetrock, tape, float it, and then slap on the right texture. Tried to do a ceiling myself, was a misearable failure. Had some guy come in today, he knocked out the ceiling and then textured the ceiling and some wall areas that needed to be redone (I have some custom texturing) in about 5 hours. Texture matches perfectly (tried to do this myself as well and it was god awful). Tomorrow he'll be back to paint both ceiling and walls. May be the best $600 I've ever spent.

Yeah, it's definitely an art, I've seen people do it who know what they are doing and they make it look simple and quick. When I do it, it always looks messed up. I'm not sure if it is because I focus on all the mistakes I made, but I figure it is because I have no practice with it.

It's nice being able to sit back, drink a beer and watch them work too.

haha I had a leak in my ceiling that i fixed myself. I tried to patch the ceiling after and it never looked right. I ended up texturing the whole ceiling, what a pain in the ass... That and I dropped some drywall on my head. I will never do it again.

Nothing like someone who can do all that and NOT have to use texture. (skim coat and smooth out)

Smooth walls look so much nicer then put on the flattest paint you can find and that is artwork. Takes more time or in your case costs more money to have done (and for good reason), but the end result is way better IMO.

There's a tremendous difference between being able to muddle through the job and get it done, and being able to do the job professionally.

We had some "wall work" done a few years ago. When the drywall was replaced, we hired a tape & texture guy to come finish the job. WOW! You couldn't tell where the old drywall ended and the new piece started. A bit of paint, and it was good as new.

That's what basically happened to us. We had a hot water heater relief valve go out and soaked one of our second floor bedroom ceilings. Had to tear out the carpet and half the ceiling - that's how bad it got. I fixed the water heater and even rerouted some drainage lines and replaced a rusted flex hose myself, but when I got to the fixing up the bedroom I was lost.

Using texture may not have been the right terminology. The ceiling uses the same mud (no blown on stuff), they just take a knife and flatten it out so it looks like patches. The walls are different, they have a "dripping" texture. Basically, they roll on a watered down compound. I tried to do it myself, but could never match the consistency. They did it in one try.

why is putting drywall mud on the tape called 'floating'?

It's called knock-down.

There was some guy asking about this a week ago here. I too suggested hiring a pro. Only way to fly or else you can take perfectly straight walls and make them look like a mud hut, never-mind if walls are fucked up. Wonder how he's doing now.

Z doesn't do texture Like flat walls which is even harder.

I'm so lucky to have that guy as a next door neighbor. It does no good to try and help him, just stay out of his way.

it's just cool to watch a professional tradesman at work. whether it's a tree trimmer or a mason. they make it seem so easy.
