"nothing to do" in yum

How do I fix this? often when I try to yum install something it just says "nothing to do" but yet I don't ahve it installed. I've used yum on these programs before and it worked.

Are you sure vim really isn't installed?

rpm -qa | grep -i vim

Anything show up?

vim shows up as: vim-minimal-7.0.109-3.el5.3

Though the "vim" command does not work, just "vi"

For fail2ban, nothing shows up. Could my repositories be screwed or something? Maybe I need to edit/add? Is there a place to get a list of official ones and how to edit the file to make yum search them?

For fail2ban yum must not be finding anything to install. Either your repositories don't have it or it's listed under a different name.

Try
yum search fail2ban | less
and see what comes up.

Says no matches found... but I have installed it on a FC5 system with no issue, do repositories differ from distro?

Yes, they do AFAIK. If the yum search came up with nothing then it's not in your configured repos.

Try looking for the RPM yourself from places like freshrpms.net, etc.

Uh, yea. Fedora and CentOS/RHEL are completely different.

For this you'll need DAG's package repository for CentOS

Create a file /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-dag.repo with this inside ::

For this, you already have vim, but you are probably looking for vim-enhanced.

Try : yum install vim-common vim-enhanced
