Novell Client Workstation Lock

I have looked but cannot find a setting so that when you lock a workstation that has novell client installed that when unlocked will require you to log back into windows instead of or in addition to novell. Does anyone know about this?

Reasons:
My windows password is not synced with novell and I like it that way. When starting, you have to log on to windows with different and stronger password than my school's novell network uses. When you unlock my laptop, it only takes the weak novell password. My school's network limits passwords to 8 characters and is not case sensitive. They recommend that students use simple numeric passwords.

you can choose in the drop down wether you want to logon to Novel or Windows locally if the workstation is locked out.
Unfortunately this will log you off the network at the same time.

I think he's looking for a way to force the computer to ask for the Windows password and not the Novell password. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do this or if it's even possible.

Change the gina back to the MS one, you can still use the Novell client but it won't control logging in or locking the workstation.

That could work as long as he doesn't need to access any of his Novell network drives. Even without logging into Novell, TCP/IP should still work (for browsing the Internet, etc).

Are you really that concerned about people breaking into your laptop??? You can still come up with a pretty strong 8-character password if you use funky ascii characters that don't appear on the keyboard (you can type them by pressing Alt+ascii value on numeric keypad).

And how would I go about changing the 'gina'?

I like the strange characters idea but it might cause problems. The big reason that our passwords are limited to 8 characters is that all the authentications are based on that one password and some university programs still use mainframe systems that have that password limit. Like our library mainframe and student information mainframe. Why they still use them, I don't know.

As to why I want to do this. Well, I don't like not having control over my laptop. I havn't tried it but I can take a wild guess that if a novell user with administrator/supervisor/root type access was to use their username/password that it would get by the lock screen. I feel that my hard drive is mine and I should have control over it. The school takes a hands off approach to the network (more importantly the internet) and doesn't filter anything. The network services here do a good job.

PS

Ok i have a few things for you:

"As to why I want to do this. "Well, I don't like not having control over my laptop."

Does it belong to the university? If so then it isnt yours to really have control over right?

"I havn't tried it but I can take a wild guess that if a novell user with administrator/supervisor/root type access was to use their username/password that it would get by the lock screen."

You are correct, anyone with novell admin rights or the local password can log into your machine and log you off at anytime.

"I feel that my hard drive is mine and I should have control over it."

Go back to my first statement, if the college owns the laptop then it is theirs, not yours..period.
We go through this all the time at my place, people install Quicken or Money and are pissed when we dont get it back for them if they get a new laptop.
It isnt a company app, it isnt my concern, WE own the laptop not them, they have no expectation of privacy when it comes to company hardware...simple as that.

Changing the GINA is done in the registry, you need to find the Microsoft gina file, cant remember what it is called and then in the registry change form the Novell gina to the MIcrosoft one. Look for NWGINA.DLL.
On aside not, be sure you are authorized to do this if the system is not yours, again i would hate to see you get into some hassle over it, or if they deicde to wipe your machine and start over you might lose data if they are strict.
