Oldboy's been on my Must See list for a long time, but I would really prefer watching a subtitled version.

i always prefer the subtitled version. the voice they use is a good voice but still does not fit the character you see.

haha i only knew who kroll was from watching the league, and i saw he had a show coming out. i caught the first episode and was like WTF IS THIS SHIT? i said i'd give it one more episode and then i saw week 2's episode, and it was just awful if not worse.

i will not be watching it again and will be shocked if it's not cancelled very soon.

I like Kroll as El Chupacabra, The Baby, Old Man Juarez, and Bobby Bottleservice on Comedy Bang Bang. He is awesome as those characters. I also thought he was good when he appeared on Community. I've not seen The League or Kroll Show though.

You like comedy bang bang? I watched an episode or two and was unsure about it. I loved Bunk though

I have not seen the show; I've listened to the podcast for years though. I want to see the show because I love the podcast and Reggie Watts, but it has not played up here as far as I can tell.

the league is probably the funniest show on tv imo. his wife in it is hot as shit too.

I've owned the first two seasons on Blu for ages, but have never gotten around to watching it.

What, I would never watch dubbed foreign films. That defeats the whole purpose of appreciating the actor, their tone, performance, and portrayal as director intended.

The only rare exceptions are when studios take equal effort as the original movie to dub them properly (i.e. Ghibli's Spirited Away presented by Pixar)

Side Effects - 7 out of 10
Interesting murder mystery. A psychiatric patient starts seeing a psychiatrist for extreme depession. The doctor prescribes stronger and stronger anti depression pills (which the person secretly does not take). Then the patient kills her husband under the guise using the insanity defense. The psychiatrist starts to figure out that this was a murder plot and turns the whole thing around. I wonder how many people have actually done this.

Umm a review isn't supposed to be a spoiler for the whole movie and if you're going to spoil the movie in your review, use spoiler tags or at least warn us before reading your "review".

Ugh. As I read the first part of your post I specifically thought of "Spirited Away" as a BAD example. They thought that they needed to fill every moment with sound to the point that half of the dub is "waaa," "uhh," "awww," "harumph!" and other whiney/pouty noises. I literally grated my teeth at the English dub of that movie. I was surprised to then see you use it as a good example. I watched all the extras and saw all the effort they supposedly put in as well but all it did was elevate their spectacular failure in my eyes and didn't make me respect what they did one bit.

It's a million times worse than "Speed Racer" ending every other line with "oooahhh" to fill extra mouth movements after fast-talking the direct translation.

Do yourself a favor and watch it. It's FANTASTIC. 10/10 in my book.

Once you get a little further into it, may not want to eat while you're watching. It's a choking hazard. I speak from experience.

EDIT: I know a couple years ago there was a season or two on Netflix streaming, not sure how many seasons are on there now, if any.

Looking forward to watching Flight either tonight or over the weekend. Also have "Here Comes the Boom" at home from Netflix, not that I expect it to be good, but we like Kevin James enough from King of Queens to watch all the (terrible) movies he's in...

I just watched Seven Samurai. Can someone explain why this 3.5hr film is so great and so highly rated on IMDB? felt like a huge waste of time. Not saying it was terrible, just that after watching it I don't understand what's so good about it.

rating wise i give it 6.5/10

Nothing really. People just like to bring it up when The Magnificent Seven is mentioned, so they can let you know they know it was a remake of Seven Samurai. Just like they will say Yojimbo was better than Fistful of Dollars, when it wasnt. Just people overcompensating to give Akira Kurosawa credit for being original and inspiring a lot of movies.

Flight -- 7.5 / 10
Another top-notch performance from Denzel Washington. John Goodman's character was awesome. Loved it. And I think Don Cheadle was perfect for the role he played. Really liked the flight sequences, my heart was racing and I wasn't even on the plane. Powerful stuff.

I've been feeling this way with a lot of movies lately, but I feel they could have cut 15-20 minutes off the movie. Not every movie NEEDS to be over 2 hours, this one would have been just fine at 100-105 minutes.

Despite that, (ending spoiler)
I definitely feel it ended rather abruptly. He admits it was him, short monologue in prison, the scene with his son, the end. The audience is left to conclude that it was indeed proven that the cause of the crash was mechanical failure and not his alcohol/coke addiction, since the monologue indicates a shorter prison sentence. But there could have been a scene in a courtroom, maybe a jury struggling with the fact that yes, he was high/drunk, but he saved 96 people instead of killing all 102, and as such, they hand him a reduced sentence. Plus there seemed to be a recurring theme throughout the movie that he was a hero and nobody else could have "landed" it, but then he just goes to prison and there's no public outcry? Even with the alcoholism/coke addiction, I would think people would be upset that someone who saved 96 of 102 lives on board is getting locked up. Maybe?

As for cutting time from the movie, (middle of the movie stuff)
I understand why they had the whole thing with the girl staying with him for a bit and stuff, but I think it went on for too long. Could have just been the porch scene, and then the one where he gets super plastered and fell over the coffee table. She could have just said "that's it, I need to stay clean, I'm gone" at that point and left it at that. The love-interest thing didn't really add anything to the overall story, but it definitely added some unneeded time to the movie.

Beasts Of The Southern Wild 9/10

Right up front I'll admit I rated this high because of my 5 year residence in Southwest La. I search out movies made in/about the region because I loved living there.

This movie accurately portrayed the people and landscape. Some characters were over-the-top but they fit the story.

I agree with all of that, cutting some of the fluff love-interest stuff could have offered more time for the meat of his story while still hitting a slightly lower total running time. I enjoyed it anyway and would still recommend it.

Here comes the Boom is terribly dumb, but it's actually fairly watchable. It knows, and revels, in being ridiculous. I probably won't watch it again, but it's much better than many of Kevin's films. I think 'Hitch' is probably his best film, though that was inarguably a Will Smith vehicle.

My #6 film of 2012. Loved it. It's actually quite a simple film, but executed so well that I could not help but fall in love with it. Beautiful movie.

Looper: 9/10

Judge Dread: 7/10

Both were good, looper because it focused on human drama and Dread because it didn't make the story "bigger" than it needed to be... just another Tuesday.

I agree. Did you post here about it, KT?

Check out;

Last Stand On The Island

The place The Bathtub is loosely based on.

Nah I reviewed it on Letterboxd (I should probably just post the reviews here as well). Gave it a 4.5/5 stars: http://letterboxd.com/keithtalent/film/beasts-of-the-southern-wild/

I am going to blame my lack of sleep for that salty substance attempting to creep out my ducts as I watched Beasts at the crack of dawn this morning.

It was NOT the beautiful direction and cinematography, capturing a part of the South I have rarely seen on film; welcoming you and wrapping you up in this very foreign world, then flooding you with pain and sadness as a place already teetering on the brink of collapse, is crushed by the world around it.

It was NOT the hopeful, yet heart-wrenching performance of Quvenzhané Wallis. At one moment playful and childlike, the next soul-crushing and too mature for her age as she deals with everything happening around her.

It was NOT the touching relationships between all of the seemingly forgotten souls in The Bathtub; surviving the best they can and loving everyone around them as family.

No no, it was none of that, it was definitely the lack of sleep. Or maybe there was some dust floating about, or maybe it was a lingering bit of black pepper from my dinner last night, or maybe...

Very cool link by the way. That is a crazy place; it's nice to see people so ingratiated with a place that they tough it out, no matter how hard it becomes. I don't think I've ever felt that way.

KT
