On Netflix - Doomsday Book - 10/10 - This is 3 independent stories. This 10/10 is for the second which is about a robot that shows that he can teach humans about the soul. he is a robot that does tours of a Buddhist temple and become Buddhist itself (himself?). The thing is, he is the most enlightened entity there. It is an amazingly unique story. I recommend everyone spend 30 minutes watching it before Hollywood buys the rights. It was the 2nd of the 3 shorts.

Breaking Bad (I bought the seasons 1-4 Blu-ray set). Easily 9/10

I NEVER watch TV series except for a handful of DVD/BR sets, and have never finished any so far. But Breaking Bad is gripping. I'm now about 1/2 way through season two. It may not be as good now, but I'm still in its thrall.

Risky Business 4/10

Outside of a couple of brief scenes, it didn't work for me at all. From 1983, Brickman's first feature film (he wrote and directed), Ebert's mentioning it in the same breath of The Graduate astounds me. He's my go to guy for critiques but sometimes he's so off it's ridiculous.

A good day to die hard - 4/10, I guess if you are like action movie, tons of explosions and car crashes, or a diehard die hard fan, you might like this movie. The story, plot, dialogues are a bit weak. The best thing I saw was the fast and furious 6 preview and it was free.

I think that being a Die Hard fan would make you hate the movie. Only the last 15 minutes felt like a Die Hard movie. Maybe that's why they made this movie only 90 minutes long versus the usual 2 hours. :hmm:

Die Hard 5 was an okay action movie, but a terrible Die Hard movie. It's pretty much the Skyfall (decent action, poor excuse for Bond) of Die Hard.

Drag Me to Hell - 6.5/10

Easily the most serious non-license work I've seen from Sam Raimi. It's got all his little tricks, save for accidentally seeing Ted Raimi in some shots , but is otherwise a straight-up occult thriller.

I love this movie for some reason. Many people rag on it for one reason or another (like for instance the Evil Dead moment). I don't know, I just really enjoy it.

Misfits (British TV Series) - 8/10 Currently on season 4. It's about this group of people on community service that gain special powers during a storm. The first 2 seasons are awesome. 3rd season is good, 4th season kinda meh so far (can't really say why w/o giving away spoilers). I have read there is a season 5 coming out sometime this year. Points knocked off because of season 4. Otherwise this is a hilariously fun show.

Watched Brokeback Mountain for the first time last weekend. It really was a beautiful film. I was worried it would be too cloying since it was up for all of those Oscars, which is why I avoided it for so long (plus I was never a fan of Ang Lee) but it was not in the slightest. Very well done. 9/10.

I haven't watched anything directed or produced by Raimi that I haven't liked, even before I actually looked for his name, so...

I watched Mantis, American Gothic, Army of Darkness, Hercules, Xena (remember the Action Pack block, that changed channels every time you remembered when it was on? ), and yes, even Timecop, before I made any notice of him being behind them.

I would completely agree with you, and I'm in the first few episodes of season 4 myself.
I think the first 2 seasons are brilliant. Easily worth the 9/10, but season 3-4 really goes down hill, maybe 5/10 for season 3, and so far season 4 has been even worse.

A Scanner Darkly - */10

Boring, simply droning on, yet almost mystical. An alternate past that is a 70s future vision. I wish they'd spent more time towards the end, with New-Path, but other than that, it was done really well. But, due to being done well, it's hard to so easily classify it--it's as introspective and realistically eerie and sullen as it is unreal and escapist. It's not a movie your mind's eye should watch from afar, and it probably helps if you know or have known some drug users.

Not even the first time I've seen it, but it's been just long enough to be worth having dug it out. Oh, and rotoscoped boobs--just something different.

Silver Linings Playbook - 4/10

I really, really disliked this movie. Probably because I had such high expectations (due to reviews and the Oscar nods), but yet didn't know what I was getting myself into. It is so unbelievable, as in, everything the actors/characters did seemed forced and not real. You have the funny old man (Dinero) playing his usual role, and then the half retarded, or I guess BiPolar guy playing a mentally challenged person, the clueless mom, and the naive girl. The characters were pushed on the viewer to the extent that I felt like I was watching a cheesy sitcom. The plot was terrible and predictable as well. I am really just shaking my head as to why this movie has had such great reviews. I only give it a 4/10 because J-Law is a 100*10/10 in the movie. I would not recommend this movie to anyone except some sappy women.

You are giving it FAR too much credit and rating it FAR too high.

Just watched it yesterday and I think it's better. Insidious is half of a very good horror movie, but Sinister is an overall very good horror movie. Good atmosphere, good acting, and just an overall decent story that does not completely fall apart like some recent horror movies. Recommended if you like horror at all.

yup i agree. i also didn't think insidious was very scary and was just okay to me. but sinister, like you said, had pretty much everything in it, and like 99% of recent horror movies do, this one did not fall off at the end with some stupid ending.

Agreed. I have a homophobic friend that absolutely refuses to watch this. I use his unwillingness to watch it as a source to tease him. I thought it was an awesome movie; very moving.

Yeah, I was worried as I was watching Sinister that it would end up like so many recent horror flicks, where it just completely falls apart at the end, but it didn't. It's not perfect or anything, but it's a very enjoyable horror watch. I would give it 8/10.

That's a shame and just so it is 100% clear, the homosexuality has absolutely nothing to do with why I waited so long to see it, I was just avoiding Ang Lee because until Life of Pi, I had not really liked much of anything he had done. I also generally do not like the heavily lauded Oscar "issue" films. Both concerns were seemingly unwarranted.

Honestly it's just a story of love; the sex of the participants could be deemed irrelevant to some degree. It's a forbidden love, so it's almost Romeo and Juliet in some ways, or any other forbidden love tale told throughout time. Fortunately it is a fresh take on the story and is composed so well it's hard not to get wrapped up in it all.

JFK - 9/10: I'm not really one to believe in conspiracies; I believe Neil Armstrong did walk on the moon, those planes did hit the towers, and Sam Worthington did sell his soul (and his personality) to the devil in order to make it in Hollywood. I do, however, find conspiracy theories absolutely fascinating and since this was around 3.5 hours of conspiracy up on screen, it was pretty easy to get wrapped up in Garrison's world of multiple shooters and CIA cover-ups.

Probably the most amazing thing about this film is the pacing. It never really slows down over the entire 3.5 hours and works extremely well as a procedural. It took a while to believe all of the accents on display, but fortunately it did not take too long for that to fade away so I could just enjoy the ride with Costner and Rooker and the entire amazing cast f characters (having Wayne Knight show up did make me laugh, I mean how could I not think of Keith Hernandez at that point). I even loved the entire summation in the courtroom at the end with all of Costner's bluster, something I would typically dislike, but really worked here.

I'm not sure I have much desire to watch the rest of Stone's presidential trilogy, but I'm happy I finally saw this one.

For me Flight was:

First Act: 9/10. Fantastic beginning, everything from the opening scene till
Denzel wakes up in the hosptial

Second Act: 5/10. Dragged on, got some okay characterization.

Third Act: 4/10 I'm not one who needs
happy endings, but I found the entire ending kind of WTF-y. From all the previews, I assumed this was going to be a more cheery movie, about a flawed man triumphing against petty allegations that would damage his reputation in the face of astounding heroism. I guess it was just a little too dark a movie for me. Perhaps if I went in with different expectations I would have enjoyed it more
