Tucker & Dale Versus Evil: 8/10

I initially did not want to see this movie despite recommendations from my friends. The hillbillies on the cover did not appeal to me, in fact the opposite. But any movie that came create the quotable line, "I should have known if a guy like me tried to talk to a girl like you, someone would end up dead." is awesome in my book. This movie is marketed like a horror but i would not really call it horror, it is humor. The story is solid and the acting is perfect with the two playing Tucker and Dale, hillbillies that the college kids are afraid to even talk to, is fantastic. I recommend this movie to everyone. And if you liked The Cabin in the Woods you definitely will like this movie.

Tape 7.5/10

Interesting little indie on Amazon Instant. Ethan Hawke/Uma Thurman and someone else I should recognize.

I have no idea how to describe it

you ever watched HD stuff from amazon instant? ive had prime for a few months now and literally just found out 2 days ago that there are tons and tons of movies that i can watch for free. i'm just curious how the soundtrack and video quality are of the "HD" videos that they have. i'd be watching it through my ps3 most likely, or the 360 if that is better.

Eden Log - 7/10

Weird, intriguing, odd. Just a movie I picked at random to watch on Amazon Prime and I was pleasantly surprised. It reminds me of Moon and Cube with regard to feeling and intensity. An intense movie without the edge of your seat super over the top intensity that many movies seem to have. I'm still not 100% sure I understand what happened in the movie, although that doesn't bother me.

Life of Pi 8/10 - The question asked early in the movie is what kept me intrigued the whole time.

Cloud Atlas ?/10. - I still do not know how I feel about this movie. I did not have any expectations when I began the movie. I had no idea what it was about. I'm still not sure I do. But part of me really loved the movie. I'll say this. It was HIGHLY original and artistically very well done. Part of me thinks it is a masterpiece. The other part of me thinks it will be lost on so many people because it is so out there.

old boy - 8/10 - i had no clue what this movie was about other than people raving about it. i had thought it was a martial arts movie from what i had heard about it but was totally wrong. but man, what a FUCKED UP movie this is, but in a good way. kept me interested the whole way through and wow it goes out with a bang. my favorite part was the internet cafe the first time he is there and i could hear starcraft being played in the background lol. heard some terran sounds.

conan the barbarian (newer one) - 8/10 - this movie got reamed by critics but a friend said it wasn't bad, and i saw it on amazon prime so i decided to give it a go. i was REALLY surprised at how much i liked it. A LOT of action the entire movie and just a pretty solid story. acting was not that bad either considering it's a bunch of no names.

yesterday was the first time i used amazon prime streaming and i gotta say i'm somewhat impressed. oldboy was in SD with crappy sound, and it looked almost like a telesync on my screen, but it was definitely watchable. it only had stereo sound too so no surround sound which did suck, but that movie isn't one that strongly benefits from an awesome soundtrack or anything.

conan was in HD, and man i was pretty impressed. definitely 720p but the picture was great. there definitely was a little bit of stuttering here and there, and more in some scenes than others, but that was only video. the sound never stuttered once, which is all that really would bother me. and by video stuttering, it is hardly noticeable to a normal viewer like my wife, but i could pick up on it. but the sound was awesome in 5.1. i expected it to be lower quality but it was great.

Even though i knew the entire plot i loved Oldboy. The same actor is in I Saw the Devil which is subtitled on Netflix, but Oldboy is a better movie.

A small plot hole: (spoilers)

That young villain is revealed to have been in the same HS class as the protagonist? He's way too young compared to the main character.

People don't age at the same rate. The hard the life style the older you look. Being in the the situation "oldboy" was in I would say that was hard living environment.

I signed up for Hulu Plus when a friend told me about their deal with Criterion.

I watched 2 movies and a documentary

Rabindranath Tagore
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055351/
8/10
This is a documentary done by the legendary Satyajit Ray about Indian polymath Rabindranath Tagore. It told the story in a wonderful and informative way. The shots and composition were done brilliantly. It made me interested in the many works of Rabindranath Tagore, and so now, I want to try reading some of his works.

An Enemy of the People
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097409/
8/10
Hooray, more Satyajit Ray!
This particular film is based on a play by Henrik Ibsen. It has been made into film quite a few times by various directors. This particular telling of the story was fantastic. The suspense builds as a man of science (a Doctor) goes up against men of Superstition (the folks who think that leaves can purify water and make it so that bacteria can not infect it.) His brother turn on him, and then in a crescendo of doom and gloom, everybody seems to turn on him. The climax is fantastic, the film was really well made. I enjoyed every momment of it.

Winter Light
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057358/
8/10
This film is grueling, dark, and grey. It's depressing. It's uneventful. It's potent. It's powerful. It's epic in its dullness. In the film, a pastor is questioning his faith and lost due to the silence of god. Almost every character in this film lives a life of self loathing. It's not the most happy of films, but it was really quite beautiful in its darkness.

Spring Breakers - 9.5/10: Not for everyone, but I freaking loved this movie. It looked and sounded amazing, plus Franco was amazing. Awesome flick.

KT

Yeah i loved it.
Sadly, i don't really have many friends who are into "art movies" like i'd like to classify Spring Breakers as, but i felt it was a really good movie and actually really want to see it again.
I've watched a lot of movies lately.

Tree of Life felt the most worth writing about. But, I can't translate it's language of emotion and poetry into words. I am not a poet, but I'll try anyhow. The film was a towering monument of humility that transcends all genres of film. While watching this film I felt the full gamut of emotion. Its subject is life itself. I watched it a second time the very next day. It is beautiful beyond description. It is both one of the most joyful and one of the most menolcholy of films. Opinions on this film are very polarized, for good reason. Either you see it for what it is, and it connects with you like no other, or you feel no connection, and therefore see it as pretentious garbage. It connected with me.

Amazing movie, agreed.

I am looking forward to seeing To the Wonder (another Terrence Malick film), but it seems it's not getting as good reviews.

Youth in Revolt - 6/10. I thought it was OK. The plot was a little odd.

The Rum Diary - 5/10. The ending was kinda bleh. Amber Heard's teeth were whiter than white.

The campaign - 8/10. Haven't laughed that hard in a long time. And I generally hate Will Farrell movies.

I actually saw it again on the weekend after I watched The Place Beyond the Pines and liked it even more the second time through. I think a lot of people do not understand what the movie is, so they are not even going to see it. The poster and the marketing probably have a lot to do with that and it's a shame, because it's a kick-ass movie.

Sunshine 8.5/10 (Although I'd like to give it a 10/10 subjectively)

It concerns a crew of astronauts whose mission is to reignite the sun which has started dimming and dooming the earth to eventually freeze 50 years into the future.

The music and cinematography are outstanding.

The tone of the movie changes 2/3 of the way in and there is seemingly a huge flaw concerning the ship and mission.

However, good sci-fi in which the adversary isn't aliens but an environmental factor that must be overcome is rare. And I like the first parts of the movie and the ending so much that the flaws and inconsistencies are forgivable for me.

Slither - 6/10

I typically really like movies from James Gunn. This one started out great, but got meh towards the midpoint, and stayed there. Better than average, but far below my hopes.
