Sunshine 8.5/10 (Although I'd like to give it a 10/10 subjectively)

It concerns a crew of astronauts whose mission is to reignite the sun which has started dimming and dooming the earth to eventually freeze 50 years into the future.

The music and cinematography are outstanding.

The tone of the movie changes 2/3 of the way in and there is seemingly a huge flaw concerning the ship and mission.

However, good sci-fi in which the adversary isn't aliens but an environmental factor that must be overcome is rare. And I like the first parts of the movie and the ending so much that the flaws and inconsistencies are forgivable for me.
Yeah first 2/3 = fantastic, 10/10.

Then last 1/3 = wtf, poop.

Watching Banshee now. On eposide 8/10, great series, sad i am almost done with it for now.

Yeah it's rather preposterous at times, but i think i am at episode 10...i believe the last one?

Entertaining series for sure, even if rather unbelievable most of the time.

Life of Pi 7.9/10 - Beautiful in blu ray. Spent too much time focusing on tiger/boy relationship, and not enough on the
survival
aspect. And I felt the movie drag a little bit then. I had the same issue in the book. Overall well done though.

Oz: The Great and Powerful 2/10:

Horrible. Simply horrible. Took my daughter to it. 1st off its WAY too long. 2nd it's WAY too scary for younger kids 3rd: The story is HORRIBLE. The acting is horrible.

I give it 2 simply because Mila Kunis is in it and she wears tight leather pants. (but only for half the movie)

Slither - 6/10

I typically really like movies from James Gunn. This one started out great, but got meh towards the midpoint, and stayed there. Better than average, but far below my hopes.

OMG I love this movie. Easily in my top 20 of favorite horrorish movies.

La pianiste (The Piano Teacher, 2001) 8.5/10

In French, it definitely is beyond the bounds of the relatively circumscribed realm of American cinema. Took me into areas of imagination that don't get a lot of exercise in popular media. Stark sex, explores realms of the psyche not often visited, mostly done with understated cinematic values but they were perfect for the subject matter. Great great casting and acting.

Downfall (Untergang, German, 2004) 7.5/10

Watched a few days ago, here are my notes (I don't think this would spoil it for anyone who knows even a little history):

Brutal, horrible, could have been worse in that regard. Lots of screaming in war scenes where bombs dropped, shells dropped on people, etc. Hammered home the point that it was not all fun and games for the 3rd Reich. At first I thought "this guy just isn't coming across as a dictator, he's a guy playing the role and he's not up to it, not at all." Actually, he was best in the scenes where he portrayed Adolph Hitler as a guy with a very bad temper, to say the least, the temper of tempers. Was he actually like that? It wouldn't surprise me, But how can I judge that. It wasn't Adolph speaking to thousands of people at a time, which is just about the only view I have of him as a person. It was Adolph among his close ties, so who knows? It's based on some books, evidently according to the credits. It's all in German with English subtitles. A lot of very good cinematography. It's one of those historical pictures where during the end credits it tells you what happened to all the major surviving characters. Many of the characters committed suicide, including Adolph, of course, and his paramour (and at the last moment, wife), Eva Braun.

Hitler was a vegetarian, so it said in the movie. That seems pretty ironic for a guy who had arguably more blood on his hands than any other human being in the history of the race.

Oblivion - IMAX - 7/10

Beautiful movie. Cinematography and effects get a 10/10. Plot was interesting and the movie did a decent job of character development while explaining the background of the circumstances the world was in.

Cruise did a good job in the movie as there are only 5 characters in the movie so he really did carry it.

Its a little over 2hrs, felt long - but cinematography was gorgeous so I didn't mind.

Les Miserables The Musical Movie 6/10 - Why do they insist on casting people who can't sing in a singing role?

Guys and Dolls did one better:

1. Non-singer in singing role (Marlon Brando);
2. Singer in mostly non-singing role (Frank Sinatra).

commando - 10/10 - my wife had never seen this and it was on amazon prime streaming so we watched it. i forgot how awesome this movie is and how many great 1 liners there are. the action scene at the end where he storms the compound is just so cheesy awesome. there are 20 people shooting at arnold but no one can hit him, he turns and fires a burst in their general direction and hits 5 of em. just classic action stuff. awesome movie.

teenage mutant ninja turtles (original) - 11/10 - another one i hadn't seen in probably over 10 years, and my wife had never seen it either. i got the trilogy on bluray a couple weeks back so we popped it in. god this movie is just amazing still to this day. i still remember pretty much every line in the movie from seeing it so many times as a kid. i also can't believe the effects in that movie especially for it's time. the turtles just look awesome and the choreography is great too. whoever the actors are in the costumes are amazing as well. i felt like i was 10 years old again watching it.

The Jackie Robinson movie. It was ok, nothing stood out. It was getting good reviews so I was expecting more from it. It was standard fare for its type of movie about overcoming racism. Nothing special IMO.

From what you said, the only negative is that it is longer than it should be. Any other negatives?

Plot development could have been better and the movie wrapped up quite tidy - a plus for some, a negative for others. Dialogue was in short supply - its up to the viewer to clue in and put the pieces together to form you own conclusions about a lot of stuff.

Movie could have easily been 3hrs + if they wanted to explore any of the subplots.

Gorgeous movie though -

Oblivion 8/10

I have no idea why the critics are panning this movie. I found it thoroughly enjoyable and well done. Not on par with 2001 a space odyssey or other space epics, but still darn good. Well worth the $11 I paid to see it in the theater.

 I'm going to have to hunt this one down. It was the first movie I ever saw in the theaters, and watched it many, many times after that on VHS. Many fond memories of it. Been a good 15 years since I've even seen a clip though. Thanks for making me think of it!

Oblivion 10/10

Thought the movie was awesome, liked the plot as well.

Primer 9/10, probably the most confusing movie I've seen in a while, almost impossible to keep up with the plot and story line.

Some of it was playing what other sci-fi movies are in this movie?

Wall-E
Planet of the Apes
Moon
Matrix

Like others, saw Oblivion this weekend at a Cinemark XD theater. Never been to an XD theater before so it was a pretty nice experience. (Though f'n tix were $13.50/each)

Movie was pretty good. Some slow parts in it but overall pretty good. Characters/acting was not over the top and was very believable. I was kind of expecting some large epic battles/fight scenes as I usually do w/ sci-fi movies, but this one wasn't that type of movie. Felt like it has some elements of Matrix, Minority Report, and Tron.

The music/score was absolutely awesome though. Had a Tron / Two Steps from Hell feel to it. I am definitely buying the soundtrack to this.

7.5/10
